Our new home does not have a receptacle that will fit my tanning bed plug.
I need a 6-20R receptacle for the bed to plug in. It is a 220 volt 20 amp circuit breaker.

Have you added a receptacle to your home? What is the cost?

Thanks,

Make sure you hire a licensed electrician. 220 volt will kill you. I think you need to call a few places out of the Yellow Pages. They should be able to give you a ballpark figure.

I had a receptle added for my electric stove (I did not want to use gas, so I had a plumber cap that). I had an electrician do it (MUST! for safety!) and the cost was about $400. The special wire they use for that amp amount is expensive so that was part of it.

You will also need to make sure that you have enough amperage available in your electrical distribution box. ( a problem in older homes) That is, that you have an available place to attach the new circuit. Also, the closer you position this new circuit to the breaker box, and the easier the "run" the better. If you are placing the new tanning bed at the other end of the house, and up stairs and the breaker box is in the far corner of the basement, you can add $$ to the estimate, because adding circuits are hard to do in completed buildings. :hippie:

Its hard for me to put a price on it due to the differences in costs of supplies/labor across the country, but it tends to be a big job. If you have an older home, it will get even bigger. Here on the upper east coast expect the job to cost about $900-1200. I'd expect it to be less where you live. :)

It's not the cost for the receptacle. It's the cost to run a new line (home run) from your circuit breaker box to the location of your tanning bed. It's the cost to add an extra breaker to your box. The costs will be much higher if your breaker box is maxed out and you need a new breaker box and/or a new line from the street.

The price an electrician quotes will probably not include whatever you have to pay a carpenter to patch any holes the electrician has to make to run the wire.

You will probably not need a new line in from the street if your service is at least "100 amperes at 220 volts".

You will probably need to get a permit from your city or town.

This 220 volt 20 amp circuit is very similar to a clothes dryer circuit.

Do it yourself is not out of the question except in a few cities or if you live in a multifamily condominium/cooperative building or if you rent.

In most cases you can install a "subpanel" to make available more slots for circuit breakers and avoid the need to replace the main panel which latter alternative is expensive and also requires coordination with the power company.

My husband is a licensed electrician & we own an electrical contracting company in Long Island NY & if people near you are paying that kind of money for a 220v 20 amp circuit....we are moving!!!

$400 would be a lot of money to charge for that type of circuit, regardless of the distance of the run. That is not a big job at all, it is simply running a new circuit from the receptacle to the breaker box.

I paid 200 to add one in my house... however at the time my basement was unfinished so It may have made a difference! Please let us know what they end up charging...curious to know!! BTW ours was added 3 years ago!

Finally had this done. Cost was $366.25 to add the dedicated line and hook up the bed.
