Cost of Braces?

My granddaughter is getting fitted for her second set of braces this week. The bill including xrays was about $5500. This set is about twice as much as the first. Now grandson will need them in a couple of years too.

My daughters braces ran about 6000.00- insurance covered 2,000. I had a gift certificate for 1,000.00 for the orthodonist we used that I won at an event so out of pocket was just 3,000. Made two payments of 1500.00 each - they offered monthly payments but I didn't want to be bothered with a monthlyh bill!
My daughter got her braces at 9 and they should be coming off sometime this year-she is 11 now. That should be the end of it other than a retainer. I did NOT want her to have to have braces in high school so glad they were able to get them done and over with. She had lost all her baby teeth by 9 1/2.

Remember that most of the time, you should expect there to be a "phase 2."
My daughter's phase 1 cost a little over $3000 total. She had full braces for 2 years. Our insurance covers $1000/lifetime.
Our ortho wanted to do phase 2 which would've been $4000, but we decided against it.

Around here, some orthodontists do one phase, some two. Ours only does one, and won't put braces on until all the baby teeth are out (ds12 has 4 more to go, dd14 is still in braces). So far, only dd14 has needed the expander. If the orthodontist does 2 phases, he will let you know upfront.

My DD just got Invisalign Teen last week and we are paying $4200 and insurance $2000. That covers 3+yrs of service and up to 3 phases of invisalign plus retainers and anything else required with treatment.

My suggestion is make sure you like the orthodontist and ask around to other parents, I asked around and heard nothing but great recommendations on our ortho.

We paid about $5K, but can make payments. I used our flex spending account for most of it. It covers the braces as well as treatment for the time she has them on. They also pulled her last two baby teeth for no additional charge. My youngest needs them too, but we are waiting til all of his baby teeth fall out. I think all this Phase stuff is just a way to get more $$, but that is just my opinion.

I had braces as a teen but then my wisdom teeth came in and ruined that. I just started Invisalign (32 yr old) and it is costing me $5200. That covers the whole treatment, all visits, and the retainer. Also, a teeth whitening (if I decide to do it) at the end.

I'm kind of with you. My niece has had one type of appliance or another in her mouth since she was 7 and she is now 14!!!!! They are paying a bloody fortune for that "perfect" smile. And IMO a "perfect smile" is about as important as a perfect nose, perfect ****s, perfect.....well, you get the picture :)

My dd is 10 and will definately need braces but I must say that as she has gotten older the teeth have shifted dramatically and the need is much less than I would have anticipated a couple of years ago. I'll figure I'll pursue a consult in another year or two. I got braces in 9th grade myself (way back when LOL). Having them in high school didn't scar me at all

$6000 is the norm around here. With insurance, sibling discount, courtesy dissalow we end up paying about $75 a month per kid- not too bad.

DD16's braces were about $8000. Dental insurance paid $1500 of it and we got a bit of a discount for paying it all at once. However, she -had- to have them. She actually needed jaw surgery (her overbite was so bad she could stick her thumb between her bottom teeth and her top teeth) but we opted for a "80% perfect" smile for $8000 instead of thousands and thousands of dollars more for braces + jaw surgery + more braces.

It's only been 18 months out of a projected 30-36 months and she already looks SO much better. It was money well spent but her case was extreme.
