Cosmetic Changes Coming to World Showcase

I was eating counter service last Tuesday at the Cantina de San Angel when I observed 2 men who appeared to be engineers discussing making a few changes to that area.

They were carrying around some type of plans (they were rolled up so I couldn't get a peak, and didn't have the guts to ask to see them) and they were intensely talking about Walt Disney Imagineering (referred to as WDI,) wanting them to remove a "4 foot path" in the side of the Cantina to get ready for "their next project".

This discussion was regarding the South area of the Cantina, right next to the gift stand. They were measuring, walking around, picking up the tables to see which would move and which would need to be removed.....it will be interesting to see what comes of it

Disney has announced that the Cantina de San Angel will be expanded by 2010 to have additional seating. It will also feature a new menu.

There are rumors floating around that the expansion will involve adding a second level to the Cantina, but nobody who's heard the rumor knows whether that means a new second story or if it means a new waterside level, like the Rose & Crown has. In any case, Disney hasn't released any additional information on what the expansion will encompass or what the new menu will be.

That kind of makes me wish that we had stuck around a little and been more nosy. It was clear that the plans have, at least tentatively, been ironed out as the engineers we saw had a significant amount of blueprints/schematics/whatever in hand.
