In a debate on:
"Give me some leadway" or "Give me some leeway"? Can someone please help me on this one. Thanks

I've always said, "Give me some leeway." I've never heard anyone say, "Give me some leadway."

Are you thinking of, "Give me some headway,"...?

It's "give me some leeway" (and I just googled the other to be sure it doesn't really exist as a saying and it doesn't come up, but give me some leeway does).

leeway. have never heard leadway before.

Main Entry: lee·way
Pronunciation: \ˈlē-ˌwā\
Function: noun
Date: 1669
1 a : off-course lateral movement of a ship when under way b : the angle between the heading and the track of an airplane
2 : an allowable margin of freedom or variation : tolerance

Are you the winner??

Leeway.... first heard it used in the navy as a way to describe the giving another ship or boat room to manuver. but it dates from sailing days, giving the leeward (downwind) side of vessel.

probably TMI for your purposes.

it sounds like the saying you heard was mispronunced, or a malaprop.

According to Google, there's no such word as leadway, unless someone deliberately put it together to create the word for a title or name like, "Leadway Enterprises."

perhaps the person that the OP heard it used simply misunderstood the way it was pronunced and used it by mistake..

much like hearing the word "moot" and using the word "mute."
