I will probably post in sections as ideas come up, but overall the resort grew on me the longer we were there. The hotel is beautiful, especially at night, the activity is great and the amenities are much better than other moderate hotels..
In regards to PM, I asked the cashier about the 10% when we were there. The 10% is NOT added to the bill for DDP or QSDP. (we were not charged the 10%) There is a 10% "service charge" for all other diners. I was told that from that 10%, 6% goes to the server, 4% to the food court. We left about 10% in cash on the table for the server.
The food was good and it was easy to get used to the set up with the cards and stamps.

The Rix cafe has self serve coffee, tea and soda and it worked out well with the refillable mugs. We also had the mugs filled at the pool by the bartender.

There were so much for the kids to do. There were activities by the pool all afternoon. Bingo was going on while we were there, but there were games all day. At 7:30, they roasted marshmallows by the fire pit at the pool and at 9 pm the movie by the pool started. The one night we were there, it was set up pool side and people floated while watching "UP". The next night it was set up by the playground. The kids played in the arcade, played ping pong and volleyball, played in the sand box, enjoyed the playground and loved the water slide. We checked out the pool at AKL and the slide was 1/2 the length! We also would say hi to the turtles in the lake each morning. They will swim right up to the dock by the tables on the patio and will beg for food.

We were both at the pool at the same time. We were there for Up too. We didn't stay for the movie on Sunday night when it moved to the playground. My son was too upset the water slide closed at 8.

I had asked the server too about the 10% and how they knew to give him the 10% since there was nothing marked on the ticket that he was our server. He said the money gets pulled and 6% gets divided among all the servers. We had some great servers and some that weren't so great. I gave the great ones extra, handed it to them in person. Then paid the 10% service charge too.

When we checked in we were given the room in Ranchos 6B. I was pretty upset bc I asked for a room between the pool and food court. Then I was put in Ranchos. I was not specific with the location request, thinking it would make it easier to give me my request. I was wrong! Next time I will ask for a specific building. It was an 8 minute walk to the food court and to get to the pool, we had to walk around the swamp. They tried to tell me it was near the main pool, but it was not. It also was not near the bus stop. Overall, it was the worse location, but they told me the hotel was completely sold out and no rooms were available. I went to get coffee one morning and it took 22 minutes round trip!
But... the room was great! It was clean, quiet, spacious and the beds were the most comfortable beds we ever had in WDW. I loved the H2O products, also. I actually liked the theme of the Ranchos, it really feels like the southwest desert. With dried up river beds, rock formations and cactus, the theme is wonderful, but the location is terrible.
We were there for the passing of Hurricane Irene. We spent the day in AK and the rain was off and on, overcast and 90 degrees. For the most part, it worked OK bc it stayed cooler without the blazing sun. The sun, heat and humidity returned the next day. It was really crowded for the last week in August. We have been this week in the past, and this was the most crowded we remember. We noticed that there we many international visitors. When we were at HS and at Lights, Action, Motor, the MC asked if anyone was from out of the country and 1/2 the stadium started to cheer. It just proved what we noticed, there were many foreign visitors. We met families from France, Germany, England, Australia, Austria, Italy and Brazil. Also noticed a ton of visitors from the Northeast. At the Spaceship Earth in EPCOT, they map the location of the guests and so many were from the Northeast. School starts late and I met some families that could not get home bc of the hurricane. It was weird to come to FL in August and worry about a hurricane back at home!! The house lost power for 5 hours and we have a few tree branches down, but everything is safe. We got home today and there are surrounding towns that still do not have power.
My kids loved the CSR and I have to admit, I liked it more the longer we stayed and experienced the resort. It was a great resort for us!

Thank you for your detailed post; it will be very helpful to a lot of people. I am glad that the more time you were at the resort, the more you enjoyed it. :)

There is no difference between online check-in and front desk check-in with regards to getting requests.

However, as a first timer, I'd suggest that you do normal check-in, as they will go over everything for you and help get you on your way. Also, if the requests are important to you, it's much easier to request changes and such at the normal check-in line.

Online check-in is great for repeat visitors who don't need to go through all the steps, as well as those who don't particularly care about requests (or don't have any) and who will be happy with just about anywhere.

:thumbsup2 Agreed. Regular check-in is helpful for first-timers, but it makes no difference for getting requests prior to check-in. We do online check-in. A couple of trips ago, I had requested cabanas but was given casitas 2. I asked to be moved to cabanas, and it just took a minute to get new keys. Even though it was the online check-in line, the CM was very accommodating and happy to look for another room for us.

I didn't know CSR did outside movies!! What a BONUS :thumbsup2 if they still do come our trip in Nov!!!!

Thanks for the info!!!

I didn't know that either!!!! I'm so excited!!

On the last day, I asked the lifeguard if the movies and campfire were going to continue into the fall. He said as far as he knows it's going to continue, but the times they start will change. We go back in October for another weekend. We really hope they continue!!

Hi all, hope you are all well. Our trip is getting closer and I just can't get enough of all the info on this thread. Love reading the trip reports (the good and bad)!! A few questions....

1 - I notice the room has internet access (but wifi is a fee?) Can I do it daily instead of weekly? HAs anyone used the in room network connection?? good/bad?

2 - my original thought was to requested Cabana's 9B (we're not staying prefered) but would like to be close to el centro. We'll only be using the main pool one day. Will probably refill mugs in the am and pm and DH is a late snacker so after DD is asleep he'll be running down for something I'm sure. But then I saw how pretty the casista's are and now I'm thinking casista's 4. DH will most likely use the gym in the pm and it would be nice to be near bus stop 2 so.... not sure which would be better to request??? I know it's only a request but still, would like to put my first choice down. Thoughts???

AS always thank you all for the wonderful info on here. It's really been great in preparing for our trip.

We were there last week. In our room was a message saying that they were testing WiFi and it was free at that time only in Casistas Bldg 1. My DD was thrilled! I had my laptop and my DH's air card to avoid payint the $10 a day. WiFi was fast and nice but not offered everywhere yet.

This was the movie and campfire schedule while we were there this weekend, Fri and Saturday. On Sunday they switched to winter lifeguard hours and the times changed a little. Lifeguards went off duty at 8 and the movie was shown near the arcade and playground instead of at the pool, since there were no life guards there.

Years ago when we stayed at POR, Anakin was an infant or toddler, they had just started the campfire and singalong. They had smores kits for sale, so I was expecting something like this here. Much to our surprise, the marshmellows were COMPLEMENTARY!! They used dowel rods as the sticks. They saved the used rods to use as kindling for the next night's campfire.

It seems to me that requests are usually honored about 50/50, but requests to move at the resort itself are honored at a much higher rate. I guess I'll see what happens and not hesitate to ask to be moved.

Thanks for the pictures, Tink!!!! You just got me super, super excited for CSR and November!!! :yay:

I just found out that there will be a really big conference going on at the beginning of our planned stay at CSR (Spring World 2012, March 25-28)! Do the big conferences tend to interfere with the "regular" Disney guests or is the resort so big that you don't really notice? This will be my first time at CSR and I don't want our family vacation to be overrun by rowdy conference goers! :scared1:

You're welcome! They have moved the movie screen closer to the Iguana Arcade for the winter schedule, because they don't want to encourage swimming without the life guards. Life guards leave the pool at 8pm now. Also Siestas is now closing at 8pm too. The winter schedule started this past Sunday.

You pay ~$9.95 per 24 hours. A very common trick (that I've even used myself) is to pick it up later on one night, and then use it both nights, then skip a night. So, for example, plug in around 9-10pm on Monday use it as needed, then unplug by 9-10pm on Tuesday. (Note: you'll have to approve each charge, so unplug is used figuratively).

I didn't use it last year, as I tethered my phone instead (and plan to do the same this year, or just hotspot it), but from what I remember in 2009, the speed was acceptable. Not great like I get at home, but not horrible like some places that offer free wifi (that ends up being slower than dial up).

It is a corded connection though, so come prepared for that (ethernet cords are available in the room, so as long as you have a network port you'll be set).
What does "tethered your phone" mean? I have ATT. Is this something I could do in order to use my laptop without paying $9.95 per day?

Thanks for the info and pics about the movies. I have a question about the winter pool schedule. Are you still able to swim after 8 p.m. even though the lifeguards are gone? Does the slide close at 8? I know my kids will want to use the slide a lot and will want to be sure to warn them if the slide will be closed if we go for a swim after returning from the parks in the evening.

24 days for us!!

We have been there for both small and huge conventions. We have never had a problem with any of them. Remember, you can have a bad experience at any resort with "rowdy" guests (our worse experience was at the Contemporary). If something is troubling or bothering you, go to the front desk and ask for the manager.

Once the lifeguards go off duty, the slide closes (they block it off). As far as I know, you can still swim. We have gone swimming as late as 11:30 p.m.

On Sunday, the lifeguards blew their whistles loud and long at 8pm. They informed everyone that they were leaving and the slide was closed. The pool was open 'til midnight, though when we were there in March, I think it closed at 10. The quiet pools were also opened until midnight on Sunday too. We checked out Monday.

A couple of things while on my mind:

First and most important: THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT on this thread; it means the world to me.

Second, I must really time this poorly as we are on Page 216 and they close threads when they reach 250 pages. I am hoping that my friend, StitchandPooh'sMom, will start a "temporary" thread if need be while I am gone.

I leave September 22 and don't return home until October 5. I probably won't get to start working on the new thread until at least over that weekend after we are home. IF anyone is going soon and wants to take pictures and does not mind me using them in the "new and updated" thread I would be most grateful since we are :sad1::sad1::sad1: not staying at CSR this trip.

With ATT, you can make your iPhone a wi-fi hotspot where you can then use your laptop or iPad, or iTouch. It's $20 per month, in addition to the $25 for the 4GB data plan you need to support the personal hotspot and tethering. The good news is you can put it on your phone at anytime and remove it at anytime so if you only wanted to use it for the week of your v-k, activate it before you go and turn it off when you leave. It will be cheaper than $9.95 per day AND you will have wi-fi wherever your phone is. :)

Thanks all for the info. I forgot about the aircards. I can get one from work to use for the week!!!

I got some pixie dust today. I managed to get my first night RO added to my ressie :).

It's a good day......

Love the pics of the movies. So cute!!!

Kat......We are going to CSR 8 to 15 October. I will probably have a ton of resort pictures as I am an avid photographer while on vacation. Our last trip to Europe I used all of the available 7 gig I had on my camera memory chips. I will be more than happy to share after we get back.

Essentially allowing your other device (in my case a laptop) to connect to the internet via the data connection on a smart phone. For me, under Verizon with an unlimited data plan (now grandfathered in, but it's still unlimited for me) with an Andriod phone, it's free. Not sure how AT&T works (but someone below me does ;))

Shoot me a list to shoot and I'll get it done :).

Same goes for others on the thread, if there's something specific you'd like a picture of during my stay (22 Sept - 01 Oct) at the resort, I'll be happy to oblige (just know what you're getting into, just ask Kathy about her requesting some fountain pics last year... and this year I have a new fancy camera :p).

Yup, I get it for free though :p

Under this AT&T ripoff, it would be roughly $45 to add it for the time down there, which is about 4-5 days of paid, wired internet. So depending on length of stay and your ability to get the 2 days for 1 thing I described earlier, it may be better value or not. (Ok, this is slightly biased, but it's all in good fun :p)

Also beware that making a phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot will suck down the battery. So it's something to certainly turn off at the parks! (Not sure how iPhone is with this, but I know my HTC Thunderbolt is pretty bad, but at least I can buy a spare internal battery :p (joking little jab at the iPhone))

I'd take a look into it, and if you think you'd use it enough, it's certainly an alternative. (And technically, tethering is slightly different, as it's not using Wi-Fi, but a direct USB/other connection to the phone, but they're both essentially the same). (I think my phone actually does it natively too, but I haven't looked it up, I'm just planning to wifi it and upload a few pics per day).
