Corkage fee and screw top wine

For us it is cheaper to buy the wine I like at (rosa regale) at Downtown Disney at $20 or so a bottle and pay the $15 corkage because they charge $65 or $75 for the same bottle onboard! so I am still paying half price even with the corkage fee.

Ok - I don't want to seem cheap by asking this question... but I'm asking it anyway!

I know from reading the boards that you can bring your own wine on board and I know there is a corkage fee if you bring your wine to the restaurant to drink during dinner.

A few of my favourite wines are screw cap Pinot Noirs (not ultra cheap - $23-$28/ bottle - but not expensive either). If I bring these to dinner and "unscrew" the wine myself, will I still be charged corkage? Is the corkage fee really to recoup potential lost revenue or is it really to pay for the service of opening the wine?

I had a look at the wine list and none of the wines on the list really appeal to me, so I would prefer to bring my own.

How is the selection and price on scotch in Spain? We might follow your lead on that as well since we get into BCN on Thursday and depart on the ship on Saturday there will be time to scope out some bar choices.

Depends where you go, we found a very large supermarket where all the locals went, it had EVERYHTING
it had an excellant range of malts and whisky, prices were good for us, its ridiculious we get scotch cheaper EVERWHERE else in the world compared to Scotland because our taxes are so high,so sorry cant compare to usa.

Of course, that only works if you just drink one glass of wine during dinner.

Actually that was an issue on one cruise!

But there are several strategies...

have some wine while you're getting ready for dinner (maybe with the fruit & cheese plate),

eat dinner quickly,

buy a supplemental glass during dinner,

or pretend you're going to the restroom & go back to your room, if you're close!

Glad I run across the Wino's thread!

We are leaving week after next and was going to buy a wine package for this cruise. Last cruise we did not, but I wound up having at least one glass at dinner each night....now, thanks to you guys, I'll be packing my own! SAHWEEET!!!! I would def rather pay the corkage fee than have to pay the inflated prices for a bottle of their wine.

Have to say I've bought the wine packages several times to avoid the hassle or maybe we didn't drive to the port & I didn't want to weigh down luggage, etc.

...but...the choices aren't all that great, if you like good wine-- pretty much have to go for the premium package & still pick & choose at that.

AND if you don't finish your package they load you up on the last night with the extra bottles so keep that in mind if you're flying back - can't even put unopened bottles in your carry-on anymore...

so better to drink it up if you get the package: take the bottle back to your stateroom to finish, have them bring you a bottle at lunch if you want in the main restaurant, order champagne at Palo, etc.

How much you plan to consume, and how you are arriving are the biggests factors. I can't even imagine trying to fly with bottles of wine. We decided to buy our wine on board ala carte. We ended up buying 4 bottles for a 7 day cruise, and that was a perfect amount for the 2 of us. A wine package would have been a waste of money.

We recently were on the Wonder and brought our own wine onboard..Every afternoon we got wine/champagne glasses from a bar, opened the bottle in the room, had a glass on the veranda and would bring a FULL (the glasses are large and if you fill it it is like 2 glasses)- it was never an issue- one night we even brought 2 glasses a piece in.. I like certain wine and it was no problem bringing it in our carry on and it saved us money for other things..( a bottle of champagne we brought on cost $45 at the store and $110 if we were to purchase it on board...)

Actually, if you have them 'open' a bottle at dinner and you don't finish it, they will store it for you and bring it back out the next night. So you'd only need to take it with you if you planned on finishing it that night in your room.

Now, some of us have experienced opening several bottles of wine during dinner and the assistant server did not charge a fee for each bottle, but technically they could have.

I posted this same question to Disney's Mom's website, and the response was if you bring an open bottle to dinner, they will not charge the corkage fee. Can anyone verify this?
