When we got married, we picked out a Lenox stoneware pattern for our dishes. Someone gave us a set of plain white (round) Corelle dishes as a shower gift, which I didn't think I'd like, but it was fine for our little starter apartment.
We still have pieces almost 25 years and four houses later, plus added the big bowls/platters and replaced the few broken pieces. They're so light and durable - I often use the plates or platter as a cutting board because it's easy to clean. Just watch the edges as the dishes age - I've noticed some sharp spots on my original pieces.
This is silly, but we bought the cat two small bowls with a green rim. We wash them in the dishwasher so the cat always has clean dishes, too.
I don't like the Corelle mugs - they get red-hot when you fill them up for tea. Too hot to handle so we stick with ceramic mugs instead. On the same note, I always let the dishes cool before I put them away. I had one break in the cabinet at eye level when I put it away. It was sharp and hot, so I wait before unloading the dishwasher now.
I've had a few pieces break and the shards are really sharp, like needles. The pieces just seem to explode when they break! Definitely not safety glass.
To clean up broken Corelle, use the dustpan/broom and vacuum, but I like to run a sticky-tape lint roller over the floor/countertop as well. It always picks up a few little splinters that everything else missed. (I wouldn't recommend the masking tape-over-hand method; you could get cut. The roller is much safer.) I do the same for broken drinking glasses. Since I don't wear shoes inside, it's better to spend 10 minutes with a lint roller than finding the shards with my foot!
