Has anyone seen Coraline? Do you think it would be okay for a 5 year old?

I would say the scary images would keep me from taking my DD to the theater to see it, but my DD has a very active imagination.

Hopefully you can find someone who has seen it! It got really good reviews!!!

We loved coraline! My girls are 7 and 11.

More creepy then scary I thought. If my youngest was 5 I'm pretty sure I would of still taken her. Depends on your child- Do they get scared easily? Nightmares?

Oh and I think the creepy/scary parts are brief not long enough to really freak a kid out.

I just asked my 5 year old son if he liked it, we saw it last week, and he said yes. It is a little different, weird and freaky, but it didn't bother him or my other 2 boys who are older. It all depends on your child!

I saw it and was way more creeped out than my 5 year old, who loved it and made my mom take her to see it again! I think it depends on the kid, as ever.

We went- 3 year old, 9 year old, 13 year old. It was a bit too long and the 3 year old got bored.

I went by myself to see it, one because it looked so good and two because my kids will get REALLY freaked over really small things (well, my 9 year old DD does but my 5 year old is a brave girl!) My conclusion is no way in heck will my kids see this movie any time soon! LOL It is SOOO beautifully done and a really interesting story but uh uh. 90% excellent, 5% really sad and 5% basically terrifying. The really sad is the first half of the movie is Coraline basically being ignored by her parents, not NOW I'm busy, etc. I would hate to give away the scary part because I don't want to ruin the movie but there is a transformation that is scary and what the Other Mother wants, as a mom, just scared the carp out of me! LOL PM if you want details!

My DD9 loves all of the Back to the Future movies but once she saw Slimer in the 1st Ghostbusters, she was out of there. At the age of 9, LOL. So, I guess it really depends on your kid(s). Hope that helps!

We haven't seen it. DD really wants to. We have heard that if your child likes Nightmare before christmas they would probably be ok to see this movie. One of Georgia's little friends went to see it twice non 3D and 3D and loves the 3D better. She told me that she thinks that my dd would handle it perfectly ok. Becaues dd and her son are one in the same. they love everything the same (its actually pretty crazy!)

I dont know yet. we might wait until it comes out on dvd.

I took my 4 and 6 yo sons to see it. The 4 yo was fine but my 6 yo was crying he was so scared. So it depends on the kid! I personally thought it was a little too scary for their ages.

How does it compare to movies like Nightmare Before Christmas? I would have thought that was too creepy, but my then 4 year-old loved it (watched w/grandma w/out me knowing). He's now 6 and wondering about Coraline. Please keep the opinions/reviews comin' in.

My mom took my ds8 and dd5 to see it last weekend - I was a little apprehensive about dd, but she loved it - not scared a bit.

Might not be for YOUR 5 year old, but I've read several posts here and on similar threads from parents/relatives of 5-year-olds who enjoyed the film. The rating is a warning for parents to educate themselves before allowing their children to see the movie. It doesn't serve as a blanket "no age X and under allowed". Depends on the film's content. Depends on the parents and the kids involved.

DS5 and I went to see Coraline the weekend it came out in theaters. He enjoyed the movie and was not bothered at all by the "scary" scenes. As others have said, it depends on the kid. Some can handle the brief "scary" parts with no problem, but there are others who would react differently.

I beg to differ - the last time I checked PG meant "Parental Guidance" not "Kids not allowed". Now I am very particular about what DD sees and I think Coraline looks a little creepy - that's why I asked. And based on the reviews here I will wait until I can see it first before allowing DD to.

However Nightmare Before Christmas is Disney and PG and I didn't let her watch it....however the Bee Movie is PG and I didn't have a problem with her watching it. The Narnia Movies have been PG, The Game Plan is PG - all of which I'm okay with her watching. In my opinion the ratings are a "guide" only - I'm ultimately the one to decide if I want my child to watch something......which is why I was trying to get more information. The drama of walking out during a movie is something I can do without too.

I took my 4 yr old and 8 yr old to see it in 3D and they both said it was AWESOME...They want to go see it again, and I would take them again if it did not cost so much to see a movie these days..especially 3D.

It does get a little weird at the ending, but nothing nightmarish in my opinion.

MY 5 year old watches PG thank you very much!! I feel that most PG is totally acceptable for a 5 year old. I don't like that kind of blanket statement. I prefer to judge eveything, not just films on their merits and teach my child to do the same. And why is Disney an exception?? Just because they are Disney? I prefer to do my own screening when I deem it necessary, not let anyone, Disney included, do it for me. Don't judge something without viewing/ reading/ experienceing it for yourself first.

We love Coraline! My son is 5 and 1/2 and he really, really enjoyed the movie. I thought it was soo well done, and I enjoyed it as much as he did.

We did read the book to him first, and he was nuts for the book, so I pretty much knew he'd be fine with the movie. (He loved the book so much that we ended up buying him the audio book, to keep us from reading it again, and he listened to the whole thing like four times before he saw the movie.)

I will say that he loves spooky and creepy things, though. Nightmare Before Christmas is a huge hit with him, and his two favorite rides at WDW are the Haunted Mansion and Tower of Terror.

I think this movie would be fine for some 5 year olds, and not so much for others. Just depends on their personality.

I took my DD5 and DD2 1/2 to see it. It was actually their first ever movie theater movie. My DD5 loved the movie, and the little one really didn't pay much attention. My DD5 is scared of EVERYTHING, but this didn't affect her for the most part. She had about 5 min of edge of her seat watching, but she left with a smile and had no nightmares.

DE is almost five. I read her the book prior to the film. We saw Coraline opening weekend in 3D and she loved it! She also watched the Nightmare before Cjristmas a few hundred times since she was three. It does totally depend on the child though since there were some scary parts. It was a great film, very well done and fairly true to the book. The 3d technology used was outstanding! If your kids are scared I highly recommend getting a sitter and seeing it yourself. DD wants to see it again... She wants to be Coraline!
