DH happened to look out our kitchen window this morning and did a huge double take! I don't think I have ever seen his eyes get so big. There was a baby copperhead swimming around in DS's kiddie pool:scared1::scared1::scared1:

DH ran outside, had me drag the dog in(he wanted to see what the commotion was) and got his machete. Had it not been so skery seeing the snake in my child's play area, it would have been a pretty hilarious sight actually. There is DH with this huge knife going after a rather small snake:lmao:

Looks like we are going to have to start feeding the feral cats around here again. At least when we had them around we had no slithery creepers!

Even though it's a baby they can still be deadly. Hopefully there aren'y any of his siblings hiding out there.

When I first got to Texas we killed what we thought was a little old garden snake. Turned out to be a baby Western Diamondback complete with a set of fangs. :scared1:

A baby snake would make me more nervous than an adult - I would be wondering if there is a whole nest of them nearby! Snakes creep me out - not much else bothers me, I am OK with bugs, rodents, etc. But snakes will have me running and screaming in no time at all!

Copperheads scare me. We've not seen any around here, but I know there here somewhere. The worst we've had was a coral snake slithering up the house. :scared1:

DH has a fake rattlesnake that he has used to scare people at work (they're all pranksters). Anyways, he tried it on me, but I'm used to him and didn't fall for it. Well, a little later, I was putting up Christmas decorations with DH outside the house and looked down and there was a snake on a rock. Of course, I assumed it was another trick. Then it started to move. :scared1: I'm pretty sure DH found that just as funny.
The fake snake is now in the flower bed. It has scared the mail man, bug guy, ups, neighbors, total strangers. :rotfl2: What else would you do with a fake snake?

My cousin has one of these in his landscaping to mess with visitors/

I'm glad everyone's OK. I'm sure the kids got a quick lesson/refresher on what to do if a snake is in their pool, too.

Kill it- even though it's not alive- I'd still kill it.

Copperhead :scared1: I hate them. I remember going to camp and a friend almost stepped on 1 near our spigot!! :scared1:

Libertybelle, I live in the eastern panhandle of WV. Our home is right on the edge of a large wooded area. I told DH it's time to move back into town!

I'm actually pretty terrified that there could be more around here. DH keeps the grass mowed very short(mows 2-3 times a week) We used to have a lot of feral cats around that we would put food out for. I think we are going to start doing this again. I keep trying to instill it into DS(almost 3) that if he sees a snake, he tells Mommy or Daddy. I am always outside with him, but that doesn't mean he won't see somethign before I do!

I've heard mothballs work really well so I am planning on throwing these around and looking into somethign called snakeaway as well. Snakes and me don't go well together.

WE have used moth balls, snake away and sulfur. I'm not convinced any of it works but it keeps DH happy. We actually had a copperhead around 2 ft or so in our kitchen floor several years back. THe kids had bought those wooden flexy snakes at Walmart, were always waving them around. I walked through the kitchen on a Sturday morning , saw what I thought was one of those in front of my trash compactor and started to fuss about the kids trying to scare me. THEN IT MOVED. I proceded to do my come to Jesus speech, DH knew immediately that it was something bad, went "the long way" through our foyer, picked up the loaded pistol and shot it in the floor. Luckily the .357 had snake shot loaded so we only had pitted antique hardwood. We scooped it up with a big net and took it outside and shot it again, lol. We think it had gotten into the attic and came down by our vent for the kitchen vent hood. All of that is sealed up now. We're also a lot more diligent about leaving doors open. WE also live on a heavily wooded lot with a lake.

Oh yeah, Lowes here sells Snake A Way, it's about $12-$13 a jug.

Are you sure your DH and mine aren't related?! Had that been me, DH would have done the EXACT same thing, only it probably would have been the rifle! YEah, since yesterday I am on a hunt to make sure all areas of the house are sealed and safe. I am just waiting to find somethign in my house. If that happens, we MOVE:scared1:

Mine even sealed up the slats for our attic fan with duct tape! It's been four years now, I begged him just recently to take the tape down and he just gave me "the look". :lmao: Of course ,since that snake we have had one going across the window sill (outside about 5 feet off the ground). By the time he got the pellet rifle out to knock it down it was going up the side of the brick chimney. It was after the baby birds in a nest in our shrubbery. We just know now to be diligent. The snake away really stinks, I will tell you that. But now as bad as some product he ordered off the internet (can't remember the name), it smelled like pure garlic with something nasty in the background. Lovely tosmell that when you walk out the front door. As far as sealing, we ha good luck with that insulation foam in a spray can like a can of whipped cream. He used that in the attic around where the stove vent was not sealed, and also around where our roof vents for the toilets were not completely sealed. Our biggest problem is squirrels gnawing on the facia board, he's used it there too until they could repair the facia. I really hate living in the woods, but love to look out at nature instead of cars, so it's a trade off.
