Cooler Weather Spots for a Summer Vacation

We could really use the knowledgeable help of the DIS for this question. DH and I (in our 30s) are planning to take a vacation this August since I teach and that is one of the months we have some time off.

We love travelling to new spots but do not love hot, hot weather which can be a problem in the summer or places with hot blasting sun since DH is very light sensitive. Last year we went on an Alaskan cruise and before that we went on a Colorado road trip, both cooler weather destinations.

We want to go someplace new this year and are open to domestic or non-domestic locations and also are open to cruising. We want to keep this vacation below $4,000 total.

Any suggestions for cooler weather vacations???

Personally I love my area in the summertime (it's the only time of year that keeps me hanging on through the winter! )

The Finger Lakes can be gorgeous for a couple looking for a romantic getaway. Tour a few wineries, stay at a Bed & Breakfast, just relax :) Maybe I'm biased, but I do love the summers here.

My fiance is from Burlington, VT. That's another great summertime area. Hit Church Street, tour Ben & Jerrys, etc. Nice & cool!

EDIT: now that I think about it, we visit San Fransisco & the California Wine Country the first week of June and we were wearing light jackets. That could be another area you might look at!

We did Ireland in June and it was around 65-70 F
But I am not sure you could do it for 4K

we took a cruise this past summer out of NYC to Portland, Bar Harbor and Canada. We LOVED it! We're probably going to drive to Bar Harbor this summer, because we loved it soooo much!

Lucky you didn't have hot weather! I went to Denver and Boulder one July, and it was absolutely broiling!

These are all great suggestions so far! I like the idea of the northeast since we have not gone to that area yet or out west to northern CA.

for those that took the cruises what cruise line was this on?? I've looked at a few and they didn't have those type of cruises.

we cruised out of NYC on Celebrity.

No idea what the weather is like in August but my MIL was looking into a trip to Nova Scotia a few years ago and it looked like some really neat things to do. She was also looking at a train trip across Canada that had a bunch of stops. Seemed sort of like the same concept as a cruise, only by train.

my db and sil took Norwegian out of NYC to New England/Canada (like I said earlier, my family took Celebrity).

I HIGHLY recommend a New England/Canadian cruise.

San Francisco!
fly into SF, spend a few days there, include a day trip to Napa, rent a car & go to Yosemite for a few days, then drive over to the Coast and spend a few days in Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur. Drive back up to SF & return the rental car and fly out of SF - or fly out of San Jose, which is a lot closer to Monterey.

Don't forget your jackets & sweters! Yes - it's cool in the summer. (Yosemite is warm, but it's pretty far inland - the NorCal Coast is almost always cool.)

Scotland! You can fly direct from Chicago to Glasgow in the summer and if you stay in B&Bs you can really keep the cost down.
