Cooking in a studio

We are booked for 15 nights this summer..8 nights at SSR and 7 nights at OKW. We plan on getting the DDP for the first 8 nights but I would like to eat in the studio for the last 7 nights. I was thinking of taking a crockpot to make some things. Any recipe suggestions? Also, has anyone ever used an electric skillet in a studio? I know it can be done, but I'm worried there is no ventilation and I may set off a smoke alarm or something..Any experience with this?? Thanks:goodvibes

I take an electric skillet and use it for breakfast. Works great and have never set off a smoke alarm. I think a crock pot would work great too.

Bring a spatula/turner. I also bring a rubber spatula. Studios only have plastic utensils so I always bring steak knives, a paring knife and some silverware. We manage to make do with the paper plates and bowls provided.

Is there a Sam's Club nearby? I know they carry some microwaveable chicken breast and other things that can be prepared in a studio?

Not sure about a Sam's Club but there are Wal-Marts, SuperTarget and Publix in the area. I would do a search if you need a Sam's.

Ok, I was curious so I did a search. There is a Sam's Club in Kissimmee. Not too far away.

IMO studios are not designed for an electric skillet since there isn't any exhaust fan. If you smell the place up too bad, they might bill you for a deep cleaning.

IMO you could burn something in the microwave or the toaster just as badly....the exhaust fan in the bathroom is running most of the time anyway.

I'm not suggesting cooking liver and onions w/garlic or blackened fish here. Common sense should prevail. In full disclosure the most I have ever cooked in the electric skillet is eggs and potatoes and have never burned either. No complaints, ever. I know other people have skillets and crock pots in their Owner's Lockers and use them in studios.

We have a small skillet that we keep in our Owner's Locker and we always stay in studios. We've done tacos, lemon chicken, sausage with sauerkraut and even salmon patties and have had no issues with lingering odors or setting off alarms.

I agree, microwave popcorn sure has an aroma!

We have used a George Foreman grill primarily for grilled cheese sandwiches, no problem!

I don't think that it's safe to assume that everyone has common sense. What you or I would never do, others don't see a problem with or feel it's they paid for the room, they can do what they want.

We have checked into some rooms that had a smell issue and it wasn't mold or mildew. DW cooked bacon in a 1 bedroom at SSR with the exhaust fan running and I could smell it down the hall when I took the trash out.

The bathroom fans are on a occupancy sensor that shuts it off when you leave the room. The HVAC is on a occupancy sensor that shuts it off when people in the room stop moving or when they open the balcony door.

I'm not saying don't cook in a studio, just that they aren't designed for heavy cooking.

We've always stayed in studios but I've never thought about a blender...does anyone know if you can ask for one in SSR studios? Also, what about a Keurig???

No Keurig but I have heard that people have requested a blender and got it.

We have a mini Keurig with a travel bag but it's a PITA so don't bother to bring it anymore.

I cooked bacon one morning for 4 people in a 2 bedroom at OKW and set off the fire alarm. I don't cook bacon anymore at Disney :)

We take the pre-packaged biscuit cut slices of country ham. They don't require refrigeration and I cook them in the microwave. I'll buy a dozen eggs and a loaf of bread from the gift shop and that's our fancy breakfast a couple of mornings.

DW usually makes a one pot meal:
Stew
Soup
Lasagna
As we usually stay in studios, these work out great for reheating in the microwave. We sometimes will eat breakfast out and then depending on what we are doing that day either lunch or dinner in the room every day.

We have also, taken a Mickey Waffle Maker to prepare breakfast in the rooms.

OP, we've only stayed in a studio at HHI and their sinks are too small for a standard crockpot when it comes time to clean up. Maybe a smaller crockpot? Or maybe the studio sink where you're staying is larger?

If you use the disposable crock pot liners, you can usually clean the crock out with just a couple wipes with a sponge. Such a time saver.
