Convoluted booking/borrow/waitlist question

So here is the situation. My use year is December. I have a waitlist for Thanksgiving 2012 that will need to borrow from my December 2012-2013 use year since I have no points left in 2011-2012. My wife decided she is going to the Marathon in January 2013, which would use the December 2012-2013 use year points I was counting on being there if my Thanksgiving 2012 waitlist comes through. I called member services to see if they book the January 2013 marathon week by borrowing points from 2013-2014 instead, leaving the December 2012-2013 points up again for the waitlist. Of course, they said no, that the system cannot borrow unless all points in a current use year are used up.

So what I was thinking of doing was making a temporary booking online in 2012-2013 which would exhaust my remaining points for that year, and then making my January 2013 marathon week booking which would be forced to use borrowed points from 2013-2014 like I wanted. I would then cancel my temporary booking, putting my 2012-2013 back into the system and available to borrow for my Thanksgiving waitlist.

Can anyone think of any reasons this might not work? Other than being stuck with borrowed points into 2012-2013 if the waitlist doesn't come through, but I am sure I would use them at some later point in the year.

If your waitlist for Thanksgiving doesn't come through, then I would keep the borrowed points with the January 2013 reservation and take those 2012 UY points and bank them back into 2013 to "replace" the ones you borrowed for that January trip.

I have done something very similar to this as I needed to have borrowed points and I wanted them associated with my August trip and not my December one as I knew the August one would be a definite and the December one was iffy.

I did just that--I canceled the August nights, booked December with regular points, and then was able to borrow to re-book August nights again. Granted, I wasn't making a dummy reservation, but am glad I did what I did as there is a good chance that we are going to be canceling out that December trip.

Good luck!

Not a risk of being stuck with borrowed points either since the points would not be borrowed unless the waitlist filled so they would still be in your next UY and still available to bank if necessary.

Good point, it didn't occur to me that I could still bank those points. Sounding more like a no-brainer to me.

I've had MS do a fake booking, thn cancel it, so that points would be available if a WL came through. -- Suzanne

You mean MS did that with the knowledge of why you were doing it?
