Converting room only to a Magic Your Way package?

Best route to go please. As things stand by putting our own trip together an purchasing everything separate the best I can do for our 5 night stay, February 15, 2005 to February 20, 2005 for the Allstar Musci, 4 day base MYW and food ($50.00 per day @ 5 days each) for two people is $1324.40. For the first time ever a Disney vacation package came out a little cheaper, the Magic Your Way package with dining is $1220.36, a savings of $104.04, every little bit helps. With dining package included I think we will even save more money because we will be a little freer when we order our sit down meals. I know that Disney has offered free dining in the past so I would hate to lock into the package because of the payment requirements and the refund restrictions. I also am having a few issues to deal with about my health. Can I instead just book a room only reservation, give them my one nights deposit and then if a free offer comes along or even if not can I then convert my reservation to the package. I had planned on paying for the trip in advance so the full payment requirement in by 45 days will not matter. Is this plan doable and am I not taking something into consideration?

Rumor has it that the cost of the dining plan (and possibly the tickets as well) will go up in the beginning of the new year. If you wait until later to book your package, you may find that it will cost considerably more than if you were to book it and lock in to the lower price now.
The free dining is definitely an incentive to book a package. If you have one already booked and free dining becomes available for your dates, you can always change your ressie. However, you're looking at dates that span President's weekend. This is a very popular vacation time at WDW and they may not need to offer any kind of incentive to get people to visit. If you can manage the deposit for the package, I would book it now and do the changes if anything better comes along. Since your health is a concern, the purchase of vacation insurance would be highly recommended.
