A few months back there was discussion of the Contemporay becoming a DVC because of the renovations. Is this just a rumor or something that might happen? I am thinking about buying more points and would love to own at CR if it were a possibility.
If anyone knows anything, pass it along.
Thanks :wave2:

Everything seems to be speculation until DVC says it is actually true...People seem to have heard things through cast members at various resorts, but I'll believe it when it is actually announced. My understanding is that there will be limited availability, and the cost per point and dues will be much higher if there is a Contempory DVC. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

This is my favorite rumor. I would want to purchase an add on if it were ever offered.

My sister was considering a DVC purchase. I told her about the CRV rumor. If CRV were available, she would definately want to buy there. She asked her guide about it. I'm not sure what this means, but he told her: 1. Disney has made no announcement reguarding CRV at this time.... and 2. The points would be higher. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

My sister decided to put off her decision a while longer ....

Why would Disney convert an existing resort into a DVC property unless they were planning on building a new one? This would mean less rooms for non DVC guests.

Rumor is that one of the wings would be converted into a DVC property. This doesn't mean less rooms for DVC guests as non-members can rent the rooms for cash. I would think that anyone paying the ridiculous rates at the Contemporary would appreciate having a much nicer villa to stay in rather than the run-down, out-dated standard rooms. JMHO

So, if I am a non DVC member I can actually rent a villa at a DVC property? I know that I would be able to "rent" from a member but from Disney as well?

Yes, CRO has rooms at the DVC resorts. DVC retains a certain percentage of the rooms which they rent, plus when a member trades out a room goes to CRO for them to rent to pay for the trade. The rates are on disneyworld.com under the DVC resorts category. For weekdays, it is usually cheaper to rent from a member.

Because:

Many of the rooms at that resort go unused now (see Disney Institute as an example)

Disney could shift some of the upkeep (like the monorail and a badly needed new pool) to DVC folks who will gladly help pay for things through our dues every year.

DVC provides serious profits for Disney (see the latest earnings of WDW and pay attention to the fact that DVC is mentioned)

The last 3 DVC resorts used existing infastructure from already existing resorts. They have found a formula that works. Why change it?

I think HBC hit on the most important aspect. The Contemporary Garden Wings often have to be heavily-discounted to fill adequately, because they just don't have the draw that comes from a rich theme (or a wonderful view, as you would get in the Tower). That North Wing, especially, is pretty difficult for Disney to get full value out of. By making it into DVC, they turn a prime location into a better money-maker.

I am pretty new to the DVC. Can someone please tell me about how Disney turned existing infrastructure into DVC resorts. I just know that SSR was built at the previous Disney Institute, but I have not heard the story and timeline of what happened to the other two.

Wilderness Lodge Villas was built next to the Wilderness Lodge, a wooded area was cleared.

Beach Club Villas was built behind the Beach Club, a valet parking lot and wooded area were cleared.

In both cases, the original resort was not touched.

While visiting VWL this weekend, we asked the DVC guide about the sign near EPCOT saying "coming soon". At first the guide didn't want to say too much, but did repeat most of the rumors we have heard, especially about tearing down the North Wing and building a new DVC building. Could this be why the North Wing is not being refurbished? The guide said that this will happen after the South Wing and Tower are completely finished being refurbished. Maybe we'll hear something official soon.

I would be so there with a Contemporary add-on!!!! I stayed there this past January for one night.... $400 later, it was great! But cost me the same as the offsite resort I stayed at for the previous 4 nights. But the service of Disney is what brought me back home :teeth:

I still think they could just go the studio route in the North Tower & still sell out (location, location, location:love: ).

MousePlanet did mention it in their weekly rumours earlier this week, we're cautiously optimistic.

In both cases, the original resort was not touched.
However, they did demolish the Disney Institute Resort to make way for Saratoga Springs, and they're likely to demolish the North Wing of the Contemporary Resort if they were to build a DVC property there.

Do I think CRV is possible? Sure, and I also think it would be popular with those folks who have small children, but it has absolutely NO intrigue for me. Our least favorite place to go is MK, so being on the monorail has no real advantage for getting to AK or MGM. Sure you can get to Epcot, but not in nearly the timely fashion I can get there from taking a bus from other DVC resorts, or walking from others. I just don't see the pull of a Contemporary DVC when they have trouble selling rooms there in the first place.

I too have little interest in a DVC at CR. But I have to think that a good part of the reason they have trouble filling those rooms is because they are extremely overpriced. Location is great, but they are so old and in need of refurbishing.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did indeed need to demolish the wing and start from scratch. This is one of the three original resorts that opened when Magic Kingdom did (Poly and FW). I remember staying there in the 70's with my parents. We had to make reservations 2 years in advance and still couldn't get all of the nights we wanted.

They did keep some of the buildings of the Disney Institute and convert them to SSR. None of the villa buildings, but the check-in building and some of the other buildings, maintenance, etc.

I would agree that if they do a DVC at the CR, they would probably have to demolish and rebuild, if that is allowable under their zoning regs etc.

I would think that a CRV would be a huge seller as a DVC property. A DVC vacation is a bit different than a regular Disney vacation, because you know you are going to be back, since you have points. So the pace tends to be a bit slower, and being a tad "off the beaten path" at the CR (in other words, in a wing as opposed to the main building) may not be construed as so much of a negative for a DVCer. And the abilitiy to walk to the MK (which you can from the CR) or have monorail access to Epcot would be a huge positive, I would imagine.

I keep hearing "buzz" about the price per point going up to $101...CRV could be the property that folks would think would be worth over $100/point.

they have promise since they started that there would be a monrail DVC resort....this would full fill that promise....

Mother loves the Cont. It is not my favorite MK resort at all -that would be the Polyn or WL....

that says my budget is so tight I couldn't afford it - now if they announced it 2009 - that would be a different story. but until then I can't afford it.....

oh I would love it!!!! a DVC resort on the monrail!!!!

They've said that they'd like to have a monorail DVC resort, but they've never promised that they'd eventually have one.
