I know absolutely nothing about contacts.

My DD, 15, finally got her first (temp) pair last week. They are for two weeks, she goes back next week for the final prescription and fitting.

Anyway, today, one week after getting the temp contacts, one of the contacts tore. Is that normal? She has followed the directions by the eye doctor, worn them much less than the maximum allowed, and taken care of them. Is she doing something wrong?

So, we called them and of course they don't have replacements. So now, she has her glasses back on and she's so disappointed. She's been wearing glasses since she was 2 and has been looking forward to this for so long.

Please advise on why this happened and on how to prevent it in the future. Thanks.

Maybe she was rubbing it a bit too much when she was cleaning it? They are pretty delicate. I've had that happen once or twice in the 20 years I've been wearing them.

Tears happen, it is just the way things are with contacts. I like now that I have disposable ones that if one does tear I have backups.

She will get use to handling them more carefully, I have been wearing contacts for 25 years, and tears still happen to me but are not a frequent occurence.

Make sure she keeps her nails neat, they can be long but be careful of them getting to jagged.

I love contacts, feel I see much better than I do with glasses, and I have been wearing them a long time.

Tell her not to panic either if they slip back into your eye, just calmly close your eye and gently rub towards the inside of your eye.

Contacts are not for everyone, both of my brothers hated contacts, and switched back to glasses in their late teens.

tears do happen...I'm sure she was doing everything right, but it just takes practice to get used to handling them. I think I tore my contact lens the first or second day I had them. Once she gets her next set of contacts, it is a good idea to have at least one or two sets of extras in case of tears, then she won't have to rely on the glasses for backup.

She easily could have snagged the contact in the twisty cap of the overnight container. I've done that a lot.

It could be just that she's not used to them.

And it could be a faulty lens. I've had that before too. I even opened a new container to find a lens with a chip missing on the side.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS: Make sure she is inspecting them each time she puts them in. I ripped my eyeball once putting in a faulty lens and it hurt like the dickens and I couldn't wear my lenses for two months or so. THAT was torture!

Is she getting some form of disposables? Those are the best kind to have because you have a stash of them at a time.

I just did that same exact thing last week.

Tears happen, OP. She'll get used to handling them more carefully. :goodvibes

I got my first pair of contacts when I was 15 too. I've been wearing them for 7 years.

Yep tears happen.

I have the accuvue oasis ones and I think those tear more than any I have had before I am going to switch lenses next time I order.

As others have said, even if she was doing everything right tears happen. I've been wearing contacts since I was 12 and I still get tears. I tend to go through cycles when I'll go months with no tears and then bam! I'll end up tearing both contacts within a week (like last week :rolleyes1 ). That's why I wear disposables and always have more contacts available.

A few hints for her: When handling contacts have her dip her finger in the solution before removing the contacts from her eyes. A dry finger will cause more friction thus causing more tears. If the solution is a "no-rub" solution then don't rub! Again less friction=less tears. Ask her if her eyes felt dry at all, if so then you can get drops for rewetting contacts in a little bottle she can carry in her purse or backpack.

It happens.

I had one rip while taking them out a few weeks ago. My eye was still hurting the next day so I looked closer... come to find out, a piece of the torn contact was still stuck in my eyeball. OUCH!

They are just really delicate, which is why I prefer disposables that I can easily replace if something happens.

Like they all said, tears happen. I inspect mine every day. I disagree with the poster who said not to rub if it's no rub--protein builds up so badly on mine, that if I don't rub, I'll be using new lenses every 4-5 days!

I've have contacts for the first time since October and I love them. Would never go back to glasses. I had dry allergic eyes in the beginning, so the doctor prescribed Patanol drops for night. I use Acuvue Advance contacts, and they are the best!

Thanks to everyone for all of your responses! Sorry it took a couple of days for me to respond!

I asked her, and she told me she was doing it really soft, so soft that it felt like a tickle in the palm of her hand? Is this about the right amount of pressure?

It happened to her while she was at school at she said it was so painful and she didn't know what to do. She didn't take it out until she got home because she didn't know what was going on! I'll pass on the tip about her nails, thanks!

I think these first ones were to see if she was comfortable with them to make sure she wanted to wear them, that's why she was only given one pair? I'm not really sure. But I think from now on they'll come in a box of 6 pairs? (they are good for 2 weeks each)...or maybe it was 3 pairs?

Yes, they are two week disposables. But she didn't have replacements because the doctor was testing these first pair to see if they were right for her. I'll let her know about the container and to inspect the lens each time.

I have no idea what kind these were, I guess I'll have to find out!

I'll make sure that she always has extras, I had no idea this was even an issue. I was so worried about her losing them! She goes back to the doctor on Thursday.

Ouch, my eye hurts just reading your post!

Thanks, they did tell her to rub them...gently! She was so happy to be without her glasses for the first time. They did advise her to use specific eyedrops too, but I can't remember what the name is.
