Consumer Reports ranking of suncreens

Thank you! I just bought some today. I'll have to compare it to the list. I'll check back later. :)

Interesting! Thanks for sharing--as I live in Florida sunscreen is a part of my daily routine. I will buy one of the top brands next time!

Thank you np mommie, and also thank you Christine. I have heard for awhile now that most commercial sunscreens have harmful chemicals...I will be looking into the ones mentioned. I see la Roche is on both lists...so that's good!

Banana Boat products are B1G1F at Walgreens this week. ;)

If you go, make sure to look for the "33% more free" bottles floating around in the store. They have 3 or 4 different sections of the store with sun tan lotions.

Hmmm one of the top 4 products..the Banana Boat continuous sport 30 spf is similar to what I use on my kids...I use the same exact brand/type except we use the sport 85 spf. It seems to work they can be outside all day and not get a bit of sun. I wonder if it gets the same type of ratings, since its essentially the same product with just a higher spf.

The Environmental Working Group came out with their own study yesterday and said only 8% of sunscreens actually work and that many can speed up tumor/lesion growth and interfere with hormones.

The above is just one link within the site. I encourage everyone to read the full report.

I find it highly suspect that anything rated as above "Caution" on their site is a product brand I have never heard of nor seen sold. Does that mean there is some conspiracy in the US against sun protection?

According to their statistics only 8% work but I have my own experience using different brands of sunscreen (all of which they rated low) and I assure you there is a difference between wearing them and not.

In fact they have quite a few suspect research articles on their front page...it is easy to miss them seeing as how the largest thing on the page is the "donate now" button.

Very shifty indeed.

I actually own three tubes of the recommended brands. One I buy at Target (California Baby), one I got at Wegman's (Jason's Sunbrellas) and one I bought on-line. I think the study means that only 8% of them work to the level that the manufacturer makes a claim for. The rest do something (I have used many of them) but not to the extent they claim or their effectiveness is ruined or downgraded by the additives that are in the formulation.
