*Considering* homeschooling my son

One of the issues now would be that he has E's in every single class and is also getting tutoring once a week. Why would I want harder work? It's nice that you receive it for, I'm assuming your kids. Which would lead me to believe you can't have any concept of what I'm dealing with. Thanks anyway.

Bellebud, yes I read your response on the other board and plan to just carry over on there. Thanks for the link for testing, I do plan to do this.

I'm trying, I really am. What do E's stand for? And he's getting tutoring. I guess I'm wondering what other accommodations you are looking for. I went back and read seeing my posts sound a lot more blunt than I mean for them to be - apologies for that.

I have never homeschooled. For the past four years, I've worked as a paraeducator. If my son begged me to homeschool him and I was in a position to do that, I wouldn't hesitate.

Your son sounds just miserable. I can't imagine him going to school right now is doing him much good. I hope you find some good information here and good luck!

It's okay, I'm not really looking for anymore accomodations really, because the school is just not able to provide them for my son. I checked my records though and he was tested last school year....again and again no LD. His doctor had also wanted him tested to receive occupational therapy through the school (he has a hard time writing), but that was denied. He has been tested numerous times through the schools and he's not falling into their classification of LD. It is very frustrating for the both of us and at this point I feel like I am fighting a losing battle. I feel it may be at the point that there are two choices. One is that he stay in the current situation and repeat the 8th grade and eventually drop out or I can homeschool him, hopefully catch him up and he will atleast get a diploma. BTW, E's are failing in our district. He even has E's on classwork. He tells me he doesn't understand it, and when I talk to the teacher they tell me "he already knows it, he's just being lazy". I'm not there so that ties my hands. At home we have to go over it and it takes a full discussion for him to grasp it. He can't just be told in general, that's not how he learns.

:grouphug: I understand better now. I hope you can pull off private occupational therapy for him since the school is saying no. It sounds like anything but the current situation will work out better for him. Good luck. :)

Yes, I agree 100 percent with private occupational therapy!!! I had a friend whose son did it for handwriting, and made a big difference. Our younger dd receives O/T for reasons other than handwriting, and again, it has made a world of difference. The practice we go to doesn't take our insurance, so we pay the out of network rate, but still, I wish I'd done it sooner.

kimmyann;39671014He tells me he doesn't understand it said:
Wow, that is very professional of the teacher to say-NOT!!!!!!! it would be one thing to say he's unmotivated, but wow. and is this the same teacher who is too lazy to put up his work on the website?

Have you been able to find the homeschool program that would be help?

I wish you luck, you can do this.

Yes, DS was tested in elementary school and it was deemed that he did not have any learning disibilities. That is how we started the 504 plan to begin with, based on the doctor's diagnoses of ADHD & ADD. He had an IEP in K & 1st grade for speech. He was also tested when he started middle school with the same results. He was also tested for gifted in the 1st & 3rd grade, everyone is. His doctor tried to push the school for more accomedations (laptop, etc), but they said he does not test as disabled so he can't get anything else. He is now at the point of just being a trouble maker because he gets the attitude when he is frustrated. Now the school is not very helpful at all.

This is what I meant in my first post that he falls in the middle. Not an easy learner & not disabled. It's not like I've been sitting on my hands here. I KNOW exactly whats going on and have been fighting schools and teachers for years.

Kim
Why are you fighting schools and teachers? If he is not learning disabled and doesn't have an IEP, what more are they supposed to do?

I would suggest counseling for your son. It sounds like he has several issues that cannot necessarily be addressed at school.

Homeschooling sounds like it might be a good option, but if your son has totally given up, then he might not have the motivation to do independent work.

Well, in that case, it sounds like homeschooling may be your only choice to help your son succeed. I'm sorry you and your son are going through this.

Have you ever read any of Mel Levine's books? He really changed my thinking about my son's challenges. He wrote "Right Brained Children in a Left Brained World", and it described my son to a "t". I also saw him at a conference once where he stated that school is the only time in a person's life when they are expected to be good at everything. Think about it; once we're out of school, we find our niche and there are many things we never use again.

Anyway, OP, good luck! :goodvibes
