A recent thread on here reminded me that I want to have my husband purchase a tux this time rather than rent. But when I shop all of these online stores, I don't know if I want tropical wool or worsted wool or some kind of poly-blend!

Can someone tell me what is the most comfortable?

What looks the best/holds up the best?

What kind of style is likely to remain fashionable for a long time? (classic one or two button for example?)

I notice that many places say that they send the pants unhemmed so I assume that this is an additional expense, are there other additional expenses I should consider?

Thanks!

Always go for a natural fiber over Poly because Polyester hold body odor for a long time.

In your case, go with the tropical wool, since you'll be in a warm climate when he's wearing it. Worsted is the same thing, but a heavier yarn and therefore a thicker fabric.

Tuxedos, by definition are classic. There are occasionally 'mod' Tuxes, but go for a classic design that your husband likes.

Fitting & hemming (as with any good suit) is always an extra expense, and if you're buying on line, you'll need to find a good local tailor to do the work. Price varies. If your husband is an off the rack kind of guy you may only need the pants hemmed. Other extra expenses you might want to consider:

Bow tie
Cumberbund (no vests w/Tuxedos)
Wing tip or other tuxedo shirt
Cufflinks (if you get a French cuff shirt)
Studs
Dress shoes (or if you really want to go crazy, Tuxedo Pumps)

He'll look marvoulous & hopefully (barring weight gain or loss) be able to wear his Tux for a long time.

just my 2 cents, but this is something that you buy once, and can where as long as it fits. That being said, I'm on my 4th in the last 18 years or so -- so much for the diet.

It depends on the budget, but for something you want to last get all natural. The wool weight depends on where you live. If you are up north and hope to wear this some other times, new years, weddings, etc. Get a mid-weight that you can wear year round. And stick with something that is classic -- you can dress it up with different shirts, ties accessories. I'd only go tropical if I lived in the south or only planned to wear it on a cruise. Also, a heavier weight will wear better and in an air conditioned ship you'll be fine.

Butterfly...do you have a Burlington Coat Factory near you...they sell beautiful tuxes, or a men's wearhouse...we got hubbys there.

It is definately worth the money to buy rather than rent. Hubby's stays great...we just dry clean it once in a while and enjoy the savings.

We love tuxgear.com, check it out.

I just bought my latest tuxedo (for our cruise as it turns out - my old one was 10 years old) from:

Fine Tuxedos

I would recommend a notch lapel over a shawl collar ....

PM Me if your DH is 54 reg, 44-46 waist, My old tux might be for sale, as I have lost over 100 lbs and it may be cheaper to buy new rather than alter old.
