TLSnell>. Welcome back!

Merry Friggin winter to everyone, but please make it go away! I'm sick of the snow already and it isn't even Christmas! I just spent hours out in the driveway with DH while he hooked up the plow to his quad, unstuck thte car at the end of the driveway, and got us cleared out. Finally a 18ish boy stopped and helped DS, DH, and I push the car. God Bless him! To all the guys with plows on the front who would slow down, stopping us from backing up more and getting us more stuck, you're making me ashamed to live here. I thought we had a nice town! I'll keep helping people and hopefully the none helpers/made it worse people were just tired after a hard day of snow.

Welcome back!!!! We missed you!!!! And your pictures are gorgeous - what a view, I would have had a hard time leaving a lovely room like that one.

i remember there was a suggestion near the beginning of this thread people liked....[now where was that?...]

I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW!!!!

I'm not very witty so I'm kinda proud of this one -- one thread title proposed was 'no H's were harmed in the posting of this thread' - that one may not be as snarky though now that it's okay to refer to the dreaded middle initial...

and Iwantmickey [I think] had a good one -- sumpn, sumpn, [I forget the first part] and you can keep the change

THE FLEECING OF ILLINOIS
By Dick Morris And Eileen McGann

12.18.2008

Is there no end to the arrogance of our elected officials? Having assisted in foisting Rod Blagojevich on the voters of Illinois, the Democrats in Springfield have refused to strip him of the power to appoint a new Senator for fear that they might lose a special election, as voters seethe over Blagojevich’s corruption. Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan refused to allow passage of legislation mandating a special election, insisting that Obama’s replacement be chosen by the governor - however corrupt he may be.
Of course, the state legislature is threatening to move ahead with impeachment, but there is no guarantee that they could do so in time to stop the crazy governor from appointing a new Senator before they vote. And United State Senate appointments by a sitting governor are final. There is no legislative confirmation at either the state or the federal level.

Voters in Illinois desperately want the opportunity to choose their own Senator, their faith in the appointive process having been shaken beyond repair. A recent statewide poll found that by a margin of 66-26, Illinois wants to choose its next Senator in a special election rather than through gubernatorial appointment. They should have the chance to do so.

Every major spot in Illinois state government is now held by a Democrat. One party government, by either party, breeds the kind of arrogant corruption and self-seeking of which Blagojevich has become the poster child.

That would be deliciously ironic if a Repub actually got H's seat....

I've noticed. Every single thing I write has to be carefully planned out. I'm guessing that habit'll have to go out the window. :confused3

Me, too - it takes me forever to type out a response and, by the time I post it, we're on a new topic!

Just watch out for SwedishMeatball. She'll tear you to shreds for bad/improper use of punctuation. Just ask Charade, he had one measly little comma and all heck broke loose. :rotfl2:

I know what you mean, Ward - she's scared me comma-less!

I'm sorry about all that, Deb - what a way to spend a snow day, especially right before Christmas...except, one question - what does all that mean? In Memphis, we don't have things like quads and plows....:rotfl:

Oh, I'm sure it's great. It's myself I'm worried about. Being autistic, I'm super-conscious of what I say to begin with. Pair that with being a creative writer, and a grammar geek, and you have a perfect storm of neurosis. I can guarantee you I'll be checking this post up and down before I post it.

Huh? Are you talking to me? :lmao: :lmao:

Funny commentary by Newsbusters regarding Caroline Kennedy's sleep-inducing interview in NY:

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mark-f...aroline-video-while-operating-heavy-machinery

One comment made that was pretty interesting:

Paterson may appoint Miss Kennedy to the Senate in the expectation that Miss Kennedy will raise money for Paterson's campaign. We suppose this is different from the arrangement Gov. Rod Blagojevich allegedly discussed with "Senate Candidate 5," but we're not sure exactly how.

Hey, my job over summer break is to type up comments from surveys on each class, and the grammar on a good majority of them makes me depressed. This includes VERY liberal comma use, and the use of "to" in the wrong place, among other heinous crimes. The worse part is, these people are in college! Because of this, there will be times when improper grammar will give me a stroke.

I kid, I kid. I am determined to break stereotypes. Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to go oppress some minorities and hoist my 12' by 8' American flag on the 50' pole in my lawn. ;)

We'll need to give you a snow 101 course... then again, its cool to think some people don't deal with it! :)

I KNEW this was going to be a bad winter! We were due.

Is it any wonder that their approval rating is only a notch higher than Blago's?

With economy in shambles, Congress gets a raise

By Jordy Yager
Posted: 12/17/08

A crumbling economy, more than 2 million constituents who have lost their jobs this year, and congressional demands of CEOs to work for free did not convince lawmakers to freeze their own pay.

Instead, they will get a $4,700 pay increase, amounting to an additional $2.5 million that taxpayers will spend on congressional salaries, and watchdog groups are not happy about it.

But, to give credit where credit is due, a Democrat actually tried to freeze the pay increase -

Rep. Harry Mitchell, a first-term Democrat from Arizona, sponsored legislation earlier this year that would have prevented the automatic pay adjustments from kicking in for members next year. But the bill, which attracted 34 cosponsors, failed to make it out of committee…

I've always yearned after long snowy winters until I realized just how long those snowy winters might be -- no, thanks! It's nice that snow is a treat - I just wish we would get that treat more often. I mean, c'mon, Soarin' in MS and rie'smom in LA got snow and we didn't - what's up with that?

Ha- this is exactly what MM said earlier, when she was at the dealership:

[from ABC no less --http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2008/12/words-matter-pa.html]

ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports: President-elect Barack Obama hasn’t held his Friday afternoon press conference yet -- but we have a pretty good idea of what he might say.

Every day this week, Obama has held a press conference to introduce new members of his team. In each instance, Obama has said . . . not a whole lot.

Here’s a sampling from his opening statements:

Monday: “In the next few years, the choices that we make will help determine the kind of country and world that we will leave to our children and our grandchildren.”

Tuesday: “In the next few years, the decisions we make, about how to educate our children, will shape our future for generations to come.”

Wednesday: “Our wide open spaces are not only a blessing to be enjoyed; they are the foundations of a brighter future.”

Thursday: “We need to restore and renew those rules today, so that every American from Wall Street to Main Street can have the chance to prosper once more.”

Then the thankful appointees do their best imitations of Oscar winners (“Thank you, Mr. President-elect”; “ I wish to thank you, President-elect Obama”).

Then come a few questions, where Obama’s main goal seems to be to not make news:

How quickly will he let California regulate greenhouse-gas emissions?

“One of the key points that I want to make at this press conference -- and I will repeat again and again during the course of my presidency -- is there is not a contradiction between economic growth and sound environmental practices. I think that the future of innovation and technology is going to be what drives our economy into the future.”

When does he think the economy will begin to turn around?

“Well, I want to be completely honest with the American people. I don't have a crystal ball.”

What does he think of the Fed lowering interest rates?

“We are going through the toughest time economically since the Great Depression, and it's going to be -- it's going to be tough, and we're going to have to work through a lot of these difficulties, these structural difficulties that built up over many decades, some of it having to do with the financial industry and the huge amounts of leverage, the huge amounts of debt that were taken on, the speculation and the risk that was occurring, the lack of financial regulation; some of it having to do with our housing market, stabilizing that. It's going to be, I think, critical for us to look at some of the long-term issues that I talked about during the campaign, health care and energy.”

What are his priorities for the Interior Department?

“I want a more proactive Interior Department. I also want an Interior Department that very frankly cleans up its act. There have been too many problems and too much, too much emphasis on big-time lobbyists in Washington and not enough emphasis on what's good for the American people.”

Should Congress approve another batch of bailout money?

“I think it's important that the Treasury, the Fed and all of us do whatever's required to make sure that our financial system is stable and secure. The Fed has not come -- the Treasury has not come forward with a formal request for the second part of the TARP. At the point where the Treasury comes forward, I would expect that they would provide a clear justification for why they need additional dollars and how they intend to -- to use it.”

How will he restore confidence in government?

“What I hope my administration can accomplish is through very specific actions show the American people that we are serious about the business of helping American families, putting people back to work, making sure the economy grows, making sure that some of the shenanigans that have been taking place on Wall Street no longer occur, making sure that we're changing our politics so that people have a sense of restored trust in government; that we are competent; that we do what we're -- we say we're going to do.”

I've had a needed vacation from the DIS, and the internet in general. Got rid of aohell and signed on with COX. Now I'm spending most of my time uploading cruise photos to winkflash LOL.

And I'm just seeing where i can go online, cause I can go anywhere now:banana:
:rotfl: I had dial-up AOL for... I think 5 years. Oh the horrors. I never thought of that nickname for it. :rotfl:

It's just not worth it to me to have all the angst and frustration over on the other thread. Let them go ahead and bash Gov. Palin. I don't really care what they think. Their minds are already set, so anything anyone else says isn't going to change that. Why bother?

I don't like Obama's stands on the issues. That is why I didn't vote for him.

I'd rather hang out here with you guys, and also get off the computer and do stuff with my family and other fun things.

Besides, knowing members of the family here, those Palin family bashing threads just really get to me. I just have to stay 100% away. I feel like they are attacking friends of mine...because they are.
 I read through the thread a bit ago, and how sad. Rather than saying something snarky about it, I will simply pray that no one who finds the situation amusing ever ends up with a relative or friend with a drug problem. :sad2: I just find the logic quite bizarre. Anything dealing with drugs is horrible, and the person should be prosecuted and punished accordingly, as well as get treatment. But, hello, making bombs to blow up parts of buildings is a little bit worse than that! Anyway, moving on.

as for that other thread....whatev. i doubt sarah knew what was going on at levi's house or she'd have forbidden the association. much different that an association with a known domestic terrorist at any rate.
Exactly.

Hey Soarin, just had to say I like your avatar! Of course I like anything that is Glenn Beckish.:thumbsup2

I had to tell you that we took my In-laws to see the encore showing of The Christmas Sweater last night. My MIL has some emotional problems related to family Christmases past and we thought it would help her to see it. Actually I fell that we were meant to take them because we had some things happen that pointed us in that direction.

I ordered a signed copy of the book, but got two extra copies two weeks later. When I called the company they had no record of them being sent and told us to keep them. We gave them to two people that were having some problems in their life right now and they told us how reading it helped them. Then when we went to the live show, the only empty seats in the theater were the two directly in front of us. It turns out that both my wife and I came to the same conclusion that we were supposed to take her Mom and Dad to the movie showing.

We were so glad that we did as my MIL actually cried and afterward hugged my wife and told her that she was her joy! This is from a lovely woman who turns into the Grinch at Christmas time every year. I even joked during the film "that her heart grew three sizes that day". I have never seen her open up like she did. I think it really helped her deal with some of the baggage she has been carrying. She now loves Glenn! Of course I don't dare tell her that Glenn is a Conservative!:rotfl2:

Maybe I just was reading too much into it, but it sure seemed like God wanted us to help her, and knowing that we couldn't do it alone, we could help her through Glenn.

:goodvibes
What a wonderful story! Maybe you should send it to Glenn! I bet he'd love to hear about the positive impact the show had on your MIL and family.

Another thread is discussing Christmas cards and someone posted a thread to the Whitehouse christmas cards . Back in 2004 DH was a delegate to convention and I was a Chair to Convention. We got this card from GWB & Laura.

87.jpg

Since then, our lives have gotten so busy we gave up those positions. I hope to get back into politics with both feet in a couple more years when the kids are older (and I can trust them to stay home alone while I go to the meetings).

/shameless brag ;)

The sad part is when we moved last year I put it safey in a box so it didn't get crinkled. I don't know which box I put it in. :guilty: I know I'll find it someday... :sad2:
I remember seeing that card on the White House Christmas special on HGTV back in 2004. What a beautiful card.

I was so sad to see the show had been cut back to a half hour this year instead of the usual hour. I love seeing the decorations and how they decide on and make everything they use, as well as the actual decorating process.

woot! Thanks Studentmom - I changed my 'forum skin' - now I'm in holiday mode.

And, blonde moment here [and I'm only a bottle blond], I thought Norwalk was a furniture store [there's one here in TN] or, better yet, a WDW restaurant. When I was reading about others' experience with Norwalk, I thought -- hmmm....I don't think I want to eat there!

Now I know and there's even a thread about it. And I'm adding hand sanitizer to my packing list - lots of hand sanitizer...

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Sounds wonderful. I'm sorry to hear about the Christmas Party. You'd think they would limit the number of tickets sold being that it's a special event. I hope the rest of your vacay gets better and better.

You know, I've never had much interest in the parties. Never been to one, doubt I'll ever go. I'm tight with money to begin with, so mainly I have a huge issue with justifying the cost. I find it obnoxious. The PPPs particularly so because it just comes across to me as Disney trying to rip everyone off some more, not even centering it around a big holiday. The less people on the rides argument for the parties goes nowhere with me because I do evening EMH at MK and stay until close (usually 1am when I go), and we've had tiny waits at most rides. And you don't pay for EMH.

As much as I love fireworks and a parade, the Pirates and Princess Party was going on at MK on my birthday, and we left the park at closing time rather than paying the ridiculous cost for the party. Went to DHS for Fantasmic! instead. A real pain though when I was there and MK closed early and had no Spectro or Wishes 3 days due to that. The Halloween party looks most appealing to me, but I can't take time off in October. Maybe the Christmas party, one day. But the PPPs, I had no use for at all and almost did a little jig when I found out they were canceled in 2009. *ducks from rotten tomatoes thrown my way by PPP fans* :rotfl2:

Anybody want some snow? :scared1: :faint:

http://www.weather.com/weather/aler...ificance=W&areaid=WAZ509&office=KSEW&etn=0007

That part about "heaviest snow on the Kitsap peninsula?" Yeah...that's me. I'm on the Key Peninsula, which is attached to the Kitsap peninsula.

ACK!! Can you do us all a favor, though? When you're done with your winter storm can you push it back into the pacific and make it go away? We've already had three of those things and I'm DONE! (and it isn't even offically winter!)

Pay raises.. yeah, just what congress needs. We're all worried about keeping a job, period, and they're worried about how much extra they'll get!

I'm such a confused CON lately!

In other random thoughts. Anyone know why the libs are in such glee over Palin's daughter's boyfriend's mom? We keep BO's children off limits, as they should be, and they're after a kid's boyfriend's mom!

”Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking your potential." - Liane Carlos (from a page of the 77 greatest hockey quotes)

The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital.” - Joe Paterno

You miss 100% of the shots you never take.” - Wayne Gretzky

I also like Citius, Altius, Fortius. It's painted everywhere at the Olympic Training Center. It means Swifter, Higher, Stronger.

I found some of the old ideas for thread titles

18 inches of snow! Yikes! I have seen that much snow maybe 3 times in my lifetime. We had some nasty ice here in March, but it had melted by the end of the day. We haven't had anything stick on the ground and be more than an inch in about 4 years. Shame because I like snow, as long as I'm not forced to drive in it.

OT, but I never knew the DIS had so many armchair psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors on here! By golly, then we probably need a whole other forum for all of these folks! I was reading a thread earlier where oodles of people are telling the OP that she has deep psychological problems, needs therapy, etc. based on a couple posts she made about something she's struggling with. Nothing life-threatening, nothing totally out there. Nice to know they are all so qualified to make a diagnosis and to tell someone they've never met they have to go into therapy and if not, they're living in denial. I am trained to diagnose people with disorders, and any idiot professor will tell you that you can't diagnose a person based on a post on the internet. I mean, come on! These people are not qualified to diagnose her with anything, nor can they even know based on a couple of posts that she needs therapy. Absolutely absurd. Only people around her and her doctors would know that.

I was quite tempted to ask these people if they know what a DSM-IV-TR is, and if they're trained to use it. :headache:
