ok you crafty guys, if any of you are quilters, I could really use your help. I'm gonna post this over on the crafty board too, but thought I'd start here with you guys.

Most of you know that I'm a quilter. A group I'm involved with has adopted an organization this year to donate quilts to. Our very own Transparent is involved with a group working with disabled/wounded soldiers, and I got her group approved as the recipient of our quilts this year. Last year we were able to make 18 quilts for the charity organization we worked with. I'd like to double that this year. These quilts will go to wounded soldiers at Walter Reed, and in backpacks that will go to wounded soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Here is what we do...we have a block pattern and a theme/color scheme to follow that is different for each month. The block is the same for 3 months, only changing colors. In January, the block was Friendship Star, and the colors were blue stars on white backgrounds. For February the block is the same, only we would like red stars on white backgrounds. These are really simple blocks and we could use as many blocks as we can get. Each person that donates commits to making at least 2 blocks, but as many as you like. All the blocks are sent to one person who pieces the top, then another volunteer quilts and finishes the quilt before sending them off to the organization.

For January, we had enough blocks volunteered to make 2 quilts. I'm hoping for at least 3 in February. Here is a picture of 2 blocks made for January, along with a picture of one of the pieced tops.

If any of you would like to volunteer to sew a couple of blocks for one of these quilts, please PM me for more details.

I'd love to help! I tried to send you a PM, but it wouldn't let me.

SIGN ME UP! SIGN ME UP! SIGN ME UP! [PM on the way]

This is pretty much an answer to prayer - totally. I've loved what Trans does and have wanted to be involved...to think about helping make quilts for our dear soldiers....zowie! Makes me cry...thank you for letting us in on this.

What an amazing idea! I have no domestic talents whatsoever, but I'd like to help. Is there anything else that can be contributed besides quilting? What else will be in the backpacks for the wounded soldiers? Can I add to those in some way? I'd love to add whatever might be needed, if I could.

For the quilts, I suppose someone could donate fabric for the backing or batting if they didnt want to sew. As for what else goes in the backpacks, I'd send a message to Transparent to find out what else they include. I'm not really sure.

Michael Phelps--I saw the picture and honestly don't think it even looks like him, but I haven't heard anything from the news over here so I'm not too sure about the validity of the story. If so, it is disappointing. I agree claiming "youthfulness" is no excuse. I never did any drugs of any kind, when I was younger, or now. Never had any desire to experiment with anything like that. I was around people who did when I was in college, so perhaps being sober around people who were wasted was enough of a deterrent for me. I didn't drink in high school either, but my sister was hit by a drunk driver when I was 15 so that sorta put things into a very different perspective for me.

Helllooooooooooooooooooooo my long lost friends :cool1:

I'm back! Did ya miss me? It has been a week from hades here. I feel icky. DS has been icky, DH has been icky. Work was crazy, then we had that ice storm that closed down my office for a day which made work even MORE crazy, issues with my brother's family, just all around drama.

Thank god that week is over. Bring on February. 9 more days till my Birthday, whom I proudly share with none other than Fox's newest ratings hero, Glenn Beck.

I gotta run but I'll be right back. I've got something neat to ask you guys for help with!
Hey JB! Glad to have you back. :goodvibes

What fine company we keep. We're alllll Tarus the Bulls....May 2.
I'm also a Taurus. :thumbsup2

Oh wow, that's beautiful. I wish I could help. I don't know a lick about quilting though! Is there some place you could point me in the direction of that would give me the basics on how to quilt? If I could get the basics down, I'd love to help after that.

ITA -- add to that expected behavior sexual promiscuity and drunkenness...why is it that we pick and choose those behaviors that are expected? In our PC society, you never hear, 'oh, it's okay that those frat guys hazed the new freshmen. they're young...' or 'no biggie that those guys raped that girl - it's natural, hormones!'

And what's up with the euphemism of 'inappropriate'? How about 'illegal,' for starters?

Sad to hear about Phelps, too...I thought he handled himself very well during the Olympics - much more poised than 4 years ago.
Agreed. The issue of excusing away promiscuity is another thing I have a big beef with, but sometimes I feel like I am one of the few younger people who feels that way. Anything goes these days with a lot of people in that regard. :sad2:

Hey Soarin'...you could check out Florida Southern College while you are down there. It is in Lakeland. Not quite sure what you want to major in, but they were my second choice in colleges. I almost went there. Sometimes I wish I had. They have a weird campus though, its like walking onto a star trek set. Many of their buildings were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

I just hate seeing young kids looking up to people who break the law.

i'm glad you said that. i was very disappointed to find out that heath ledger won a posthumous award for his role in the last batman movie. i don't care whether he had trouble sleeping or not...you go get help for it. you DON'T take five times the dose of several different medications. in my book, you don't get recognition, pity, or an award if you're that stupid. same goes for phelps...he should lose his sponsors.

argh...my slap on the hand has my PMs disabled it would appear....

one sec and I'll be back with an email address you can contact me with.

If I knew how to sew, I would. But sadly, I can't.:sad1: But it's going to be lovely when it's done!!!
Have you been there for MNSSHP? It's awesome! They have special lighting, fog machines, and the CM's are wearing more detailed costumes and white zombie make-up. :hmghost: :hmghost: :hmghost:
Sadly, no. Someday.

When I go for a summer CP (fingers crossed) in 2010, I am going to specifically tell my recruiter to put me at HM no matter what strings they have to pull. You think I'd want Soarin', but noooo.... HM. Don't ask me why. I love the costume (yeah, yeah, yeah, you guys are all going "It'll be 110 degrees in the shade in the summer in that costume!!"- I don't care). I WANT TO WORK AT THE HAUNTED MANSION!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rant over.:upsidedow
not only did WE miss you, but there's been lots of talk on the lib board asking about you. :teeth:
So they have.... a lot. but now that they are all safely on Ignore, I have no clue what crap they're spewing. My BP sure has been down since putting all them on the beautiful Ignore feature.:goodvibes

:thumbsup2 I'm going for an English/Spanish/political science major.

Funny, I didn't think it looked like him either! But he released a statement a bit ago apologizing for his "youthful and inappropriate" behavior, so it apparently was him.

Also OT, but I had totally forgotten the Steelers' head coach was the guy who spoke at my Commencement last year. Wow, I'm getting old if my memory's going that fast! :rotfl2:

WHAT A GREAT PHOTO!!!!

did you stop to look at madam leota's eyes open and close at the entrance?

Thanks!! Finally figured out how to take nighttime shots with my camera.:goodvibes And that pic was actually a mistake- I wasn't intending to take it but I sorta pushed the button and got that result.

I always do!!!!!!:cool1:

I'm a Florida Southern alum! Go Mocs! (short for moccasins, the snake, not the shoes!) :thumbsup2

Ohhhh, that's one cool photo! I've never been on HM. I don't like rides with skeletons and such... I have to close my eyes at the beginning of POTC. :rotfl2:

Girl, when you come down (hopefully) in April, I am DRAGGING you on Haunted Mansion!!!! I mean it!!!!! You can't go to WDW or any Disney park and not ride some form of HM- it's illegal and is clearly stated in the WDW rule book.:thumbsup2 :rotfl:

I don't know how and I don't have a sewing machine. Is there anything else I can donate or help with?
