Connor is settling in quickly to his new home. No further signs of "marking" but then, I keep a close eye on him. His appetite has improved somewhat. He is used to eating with other dogs around, even though he ate 'crated', but there is no one lurking in the wings to steal his food, so there is no rush to over eat. I contacted a local dog trainer on Tuesday for classes to begin today. She felt that he should be in our home for a month before he started class. I spoke to his previous owner yesterday, who called to check on him, and her opinion was that he is extremely adaptable, and would enjoy the training. Figuring that she knows him better than anyone else, I enrolled him and started him today. He had a great time. He is an extremely good "heeler". He doesn't know 'sit'. Instead, upon stopping, he assumes a stance. He wasn't taught that deliberately because sitting at the wrong time, while heeling and standing would not have been good for the conformation ring. He is done with conformation, so now we can work on obedience. He is very agile, and if he does well through advanced obedience, I may consider progressing to agility. He has calmed down considerably. He barked for the first time last night when he saw his shadow in a dark room and he enjoys watching tv.

I'm happy that Connor is settling in and he had a great first day at school :thumbsup2 ... I love that he enjoys watching TV too ... that's so cute ... he must be feeling like he's "King of the World" :goodvibes ...

Dawn, did you get a new dog?

Yes, I did.I went down Monday to bring home Jude's ashes, and I was asked to take Connor. He is a 2 year old white standard poodle, who must remain intact. He doesn't get along with his intact father, so coming to my house seemed like a good idea for both of us. He is very sweet.

Aw, I wish you the best with Conner..... :)

I didn't post on your other thread, but I meant to tell you that he is just gorgeous. Good luck with him.

Thank you! He doesn't seem big on treats, so I made his treats this morning. I had some filet mignon in the freezer. (I got it for $3.88 a pound in case you think I am over indulging him. :rotfl2:) Anyway, I sliced it thin, baked it in the oven until is way well done, cut it up in quarter inch pieces and he liked it. I have always made my own treats for training because they are flavor intense. I used to make baked liver for Annie. You only need a sliver when they love it.

LOL our dog does that too!! he is getting better at the sitting lately
Have fun training Connor

Your posts just make me smile. I'm so happy for all of you but most especially for Connor. He has found himself a perfect forever home. :goodvibes

Dawn...thanks for the update. Glad to hear he is settling in nicely!

:) This post just makes me SMILE! So happy to hear Connor is settling in and learning...and oh yeah, being spoiled with treats! ;)

I think you and Connor were meant to be together. Enjoy your new buddy!

To me, this just reinforces that every furbaby doesn't need to be a puppy. Annie was a puppy when she came to our home and we loved her to pieces. We didn't get Jude until he was 8 and we loved him as much. Conner is 2 years young, and we love him too. Never hesitate to bring home an older dog. Older dogs can learn knew tricks and they can learn to love you as much as you love them.

Dawn, I agree 100% with you!! Our Jett was 13 months when we got him. It was great!! Since then we had a 5 month old from the breeder live here for a few months and right now we have 6 month old (we got her at 4months) She is due to go back to the breeder soon. My dd takes these puppies from
the breeder to help train them for the show ring. When this pup goes home we will be getting an older dog (probably 1-2 years) one that is mature and ready to be shown (and win!!). I can't wait!! Puppies are cute but so much work!!

Dawn, thanks for such a happy, upbeat, positive story update :goodvibes Connor looks gorgeous and it is so wonderful on both sides that he has a new home where he will be loved and treasured and you will have another dog to keep you company. Of course, he will never replace Jude but you have more than enough love in your heart to add another family member

How is the marking going?

My showdog was well trained obedience wise and nearly 8 by the time he had his operation, but for the whole time we had to deal with the marking. He knew it was wrong because for that whole time, we never caught him at it but if we had friends over, after they left he would mark the bar stool the male guest had been sitting at.

He knew it was wrong but unless you catch them in the act there is not much you can do about it.
