Connecting rooms at POFQ?

Good morning.... we have 2 standard rooms (POFQ) reserved for Jan 6-13. While making my reservations I requested non-smoking rooms w/ connecting doors. I know requests cannot be guaranteed, but I'm wondering what my chances are as far as getting connecting rooms? (I think the majority of rooms are non-smoking, so I'm less concerned w/ that) Does anybody know how many of the rooms have connecting doors?
On Deb Willi's site, she reccommends sending a polite fax to the room assigner(making requests) a few days before check-in. Has anybody done this?
My mother will be in the 2nd room, (DH,DD 3yrs., and I will be in the 1st room) she recently suffered severe hearing loss, and becomes very anxious when alone. It would give us all peace of mind if we had an open door between the rooms.
Any input on the best way to have room requests met?

Our family stayed at the French Quarters one time and were also told that connecting rooms weren't a guarantee. We got to the hotel and were given connecting rooms, no problem. I would suggest the fax and getting to the hotel a bit early.

We have always gotten them, but we had 3 or 4 minor children with us each time. If you explain the handicap it might help. Just make sure they note it on your reservation. And restate it in a fax a couple of days before arrival.
