We just got back off of a WONDERful Double Dip cruise on the Disney Wonder. We had such a remarkable time; we booked another cruise while onboard for the Dream. Our children loved our server, Drazen, so much we have requested he be our server on our next cruise.

We are thinking of inviting my FIL/MIL on the cruise next year. My children would really love to vacation with them.

First, I know there are people that do NOT believe in using points to cruise. PLEASE do not respond negatively if this is how you feel. I am looking for advice and guidance because I am truly at a loss and completely confused.

We called MS to see what our options are. Since they are still offering 2009 points with an add-on, we would only need 1/3 of the points because we could bank, use and borrow the points for the add-on. MS also suggested instead of paying cash for our cruise, plus cash for another adult, to add on a larger contract and everybody cruise on points.

Option 1: Use current points and pay cash for second adult.

Option 2: Use current points, add on small contract to cover the second adult.

Option 3: Use current points, add on larger contract to cover everyone.

If we do Option 1, we would be paying cash for our cruise and paying about $1,500-$1,700 for the second adult. But then we do Option 2 and put that much money toward a small add-on contract and have AKV for our family for many years to come, with a small monthly note.

If we do Option 3, we would initially be out of pocket about $2,800 instead of around $7,000, and everybody would cruise on points. But then we would have a monthly note of around $350, even after the cruise. But on the good side, we would have a large contract at AKV for our family for many years to come.

I am extremely confused and have absolutely no idea what would be the best thing to do.

I vote for Option #2 if you could possibly pay cash for the small add-on. If not, I'd vote for Option #1.

My husband tells me a salesperson "could sell you mud." Someone can talk to me about spending this much just to get "X" amount for free, or discounted. My husband says well, if you didn't spend it at all just think how much you saved. :rotfl:

While I want to think our DVC person is trying to "help," I know they are really trying to make money off of us.

Thanks for your opinion. I really appreciate it.

I think I would go with Option #2. That way, you are not locked into buying a large contract (with a hefty note payment) but you can still take advantage of having more points at your disposal with a smaller payment. Good luck with your decision. :goodvibes

My vote is also for Option #2. It allows you to put the money you would be paying for the cruise to good use and get some extra points for the long run.

But, you are not going ahead and getting so many more points that you may or may not need in the future.

That is the great thing about being able to add on so easily. You can always get more with one simple (and expensive!!!!:rotfl:) call!

Have a great time on the cruise!

All you can do is work out the numbers for all of the options to determine the true cost. The points that you buy today for a cruise may have payments and interest for 10 years so you have to add that cost to your figures. Don't forget the additional cost of transportation, food, and tickets for your future vacations.

I am also one who's hubby thinks a salesman could sell me mud...but its an endearing part of our personality and makes us who we are! :rolleyes1

I would go with option 2 for all the same reasons the others mentioned. I think this is a wonderful idea and the best thing about us all having our own points is we can all do what we want with them. I say add on only what is needed, have them for the future trips you will inevitably take, go and enjoy yourselves...:yay:

any room in your suitcase?:rotfl:

I'm with you, it's way confusing! Option 2 seems to makes the most sense!

your choice to use points or not, I would not. I would only add on if I wanted/needed the points going forward, it makes no sense to do it just to cover the cruise.

Amen. I am NOT someone who anyone could sell mud to. I look at $ and points as being a means to an end. I want to spend the least amount of either to get what I want.

My suggestion to the OP is to have her husband do the math and not let herself be sold a bad option by the DVC guide. She may not want to hear negative things about using points points for a cruise from us but maybe she will listen to her husband if he is the logical one in the family.
