Confused as to when to book car rental

We are flying into Sanford for our mid August trip so obviously need a rental. Trip is a little less than 4 months out. I've heard conflicting advice about car rentals lately, most saying to reserve way ahead. The issue is that all the promo codes and other specials are currently only through May mostly. And prices are HIGH! Should I just reserve now, even at a price I'm not comfortable with? Do you think prices will come down for mid to late August in the Orlando area? I need the car anyway, just wondering what you guys do and think

As long as you pay later and there is no penalty to change or cancel, I say book now...you can always change later if you need to. That's what we are doing.

As soon as I know I am traveling and I need a car I will search around and book the best deal that I can find. As my date gets closer I periodically check and if I find something cheaper I grab it and cancel the first one. If prices go up then I already have something, if they go down I get something better. To me this seems like a no lose strategy.

If prices are too high, then you may want to rethink whether you really need the car or not. If you really do need it, then you might as well book now. You can always change it later.
