Confused about Point Transfer...please help, was CM right?

See, in this situation, it would mean that since I have a December 2011 UY, if I got someone's Feb 2011 points then I would only be able to use them from December 2011-January 31, 2012....that doesn't sound right to me.

According to the Vacation Planner 2011-2012 regarding transferring points:

*Members can transfer Home Resort Vacation Points to another Member who does not have the same Home Resort Vacation Points. The Vacation Points retain the Use Year and the Home Resort Priority of the contract from which they were transferred.

*If you have remaining transferred Vacation Points at the end of the transferring Member's Use Year, they expire.

*Transferred Vacation Points can be banked according to the banking window of the contract from which they were transferred.

So looking at these guidelines, it looks like they would behave as they originally would, but that was unlike what the CM had explained. I will try calling again to see if someone else gives me a different answer. Last thing I want to do is get a point transfer and then not be able to use them for what I had intended them for!

My understanding is the same as yours and certainly changes what points someone can get.

As I mentioned, I was always told that as long as the points are valid for the time you want to travel, then you can get any points that you want, regardless of your own UY and the UY of the points.

Hopefully, someone who has done transfers can clarify this as I want to be sure I understand for the future as well!

I am learning all of this along with you! By no means do I claim to be an expert - just sharing information as I read it. I have copied and pasted below from the DVC website.
I've done a couple of transfers and they've been successful so far.

Okay in relation to the Dec 2011 use year transferring in the Feb 2011 points and the length of time they would still be usable: read '6c' below. As I read it, they would be bankable into the original owners 2012 use year - giving them another full year once banked, but - the big but - they couldn't go 'backwards' to Sept 2011 as they can't be borrowed by the new owner as they are now in 'his' 2011 use year and 'he' is in control of his own banking and borrowing. So - they are still good points just not as good for the second owner as the first.

Transfered in Feb 2011 UY points could be used them to book travel from Feb 1st 2011through Jan 31st, 2012 unless they are banked and then from 2/1/2012 to 1/31/2013.

I have researched this area extensivly including confirming all the rules with QA so if someone is telling you something else they are missinformed.

Maybe I am interpreting 6C differently than you? See, you are right in that if those Feb 2011 points were banked into 2012 they would not be able to be borrowed again back to Sept 2011, BUT we were talking about this current years Feb 2011 points that are not banked. They just got distributed to the owners 2 months ago. So if they retain the UY of the original owner, then as long as they are not banked then they would be able for the 2nd owner to use them for a Sept 2011 trip. So even if I am in my December 2010 UY, it shouldn't matter for me to use those points since the transferred points should retain its Feb 2011 usage. That is my question...

Hopefully your interpretation is correct! There is another line further down that would support it -to the effect that the points retain all reservation rights of the transferring member.

I was going to call MS to check my waitlist, and ask a few more questions, but time just slipped away and now they are closed.

Thank you for posting this--I think it just goes to show that nothing is clear when it comes to transfers!!! LOL

When they refer to transferred points not being eligible for borrowing, I would think they are referring to their own UY.

So, someone who gets Feb 2011 UY points would not have been able to pull them back into the Feb 2010 UY (Feb 1st, 2010 to January 31st 2011).

The next time I call MS, I will also ask to see what information I get.

you can transfer in 2009, 2010 or 2011 by using your 2010 1 transfer allocation (depending on when you do it and what the transferer has eligable).

You can use another member 2011 points that you have transfered in during your 2010 use year as long as they are in their currnet use year for the reservation date (not the date you make the reservation.

They behave exactly the same as they would have in the origonal owners account except that they can not be borrowed

I know you have done a lot of work and investigating on this but to be honest, this is not the way it has been explained to me several times so obviously the CM's at MS are just as confused as the rest of us.

I have never tried to transfer in or out points yet so when I do, I will share what I am told in terms of what UY it counts towards.

This was exactly my question! I didn't understand how, since my UY starts in December, that even if I got someone's Feb 2011 points, I would not be able to use them until December 2011 which is when I would get my points. ...

The Feb2011 points would be transferred into your 2011 Use Year but still retain their original charactersitics - Home Resort status and Use Month (Year). February2011 points could be used for a trip anytime from February 1, 2011 and January 31, 2011 regardless when you would get your 2011 points. Your Use Month (Year) has nothing to do when those points could be used.

Even QA had to do a bit of reaserch to settle on answers for some of the questions, so you can not really fault the CMs.

I even sent them the rules outlined in technical writing format so that they could use that for training, but it appears that they still have not addressed the training issues.

Better than 1/2 the supervisors appear to understand the rules so that is the best first try.
