Confused about Magic Your Way

Hello all,

I need a seasoned Disney traveler to help me out because I am a little confused.

I currently have a hotel only reservation. My vacation is May 2018 (exactly 365 days from today!). I called Disney today to find out when I could switch that hotel only reservation to a Magic Your Way reservation and I was told "we don't know when those packages will come out so we'll basically know when you know".

My understanding of Magic Your Way was that it was the combination of hotel and ticket reservation with any add-ons you wanted (like Dining, Memory Maker, etc)...I didn't think it was a package that I had to wait for to be announced? Did the rep and I get lost in translation here or have I been wrong the whole time?

The packages for 2018 have not been released yet - all you can book at this time is the room and tickets

If you want dining you will have to wait until June/July when they are released. You will have to cancel your existing reservation and put down the 200 deposit becuase the room only and packages are seperate systems and they can't be crossed over

Oh ok. So if I need to just add tickets to my existing hotel reservation I can call now. What about Memory Maker?

We are not planning on doing the Dining Packages so I should be ok to add the tix now, am I correct?

Yes but why do you want to make it a package? You can add tickets on separately. There is no requirement to make it a package

I was under the impression that making it into a Magic Your Way package would be cheaper...but if there's really no significant difference then I really don't care either way

I guess I just really, really want to get to the point whe I can purchase the tickets.

You can purchase tickets today. No reason to wait at all.
It is usually cheaper to do it all on your own.
Purchase your tickets from a 3rd party at a discount
The only reason to do it all from Disney is when you want to get free dining packages

If you don't want dining, there are two ways of doing this:

1) Book room-only (as you have already) and purchase your tickets, outright, separately, either through Disney or a 3rd party discount seller, like Undercover Tourist. If you do this, the tickets are non-refundable.

2) Wait until packages are released (usually early July) and book the room/ticket package through Disney. The advantage of doing this is, you only put $200 down now with the balance due 30 days prior to check-in and you will get the special "Magic Your Way" package perks. The disadvantage is, you won't get a discount on the tickets like you would through a re-seller.

Only you can decide which way of booking is more beneficial to you.

Thank you! That helps a lot! I might wait until July and see what they offer. I guess I am just very anxious. When I started planning this trip it was over 1000 days away. Being only 365 days away as of today seems like a dream!

I would wait because there might be a promotion where a package ticket purchase is a requirement.

It will be rack rate on everything when it gets released. I booked my September 2017 package the day after rates were released - it was late June 2016. The discounts for fall just came out a couple of weeks ago, April 25th maybe. I only booked so early to give myself time to pay it off in small amounts.

Another reason to do a package is if you have the Disney Visa and want to take advantage of the 6 months interest free financing.
