Im planning to go to in Oct 2012 - hoping for food and wine, halloween party, maybe on my daughter's birthday (which would be halloween weekend) and hopefully free dining.

oct free dining would probably be earlier in october though right?

anyway, I have been reading (and subscribing to thread) about the discount codes, but Im confused - can you book your trip and THEN apply a discount code later?

why would you do that? why not wait and see what time frames the discount codes would be valid for?

Yes, you can apply a discount code to an existing reservation provided your dates and resort are available under the discount. People often book trips in hopes of getting a discount, but I don't think this is a good idea because Disney releases discounts to fill rooms, so if occupancy levels are up, Disney has no need to offer discounts. Also, if a discount does come out for dates you already have booked, your resort might not be available under that particular discount. Already having a reservation does not guarantee you being able to have it applied. If you are planning to take a trip regardless of whether or not a discount comes out, I say make the reservation as soon as you know your dates so you get the resort/room type you want; otherwise, it's best to wait and see what (if any) discounts come out if your trip is dependent on a code.

Here is an example of what you were talking about. For my families August 2011 trip to WDW we had originally made a rack rate room only reservation at the Boardwalk Inn for a Standard Club Level Room from 08/08/11 - 08/22/11. However in Janurary 2011 they came out with a room only public discount of 35% off the Deluxe Resorts from August 14, 2011 - October 1, 2011. So to take advantage of that offer we switched our dates and stayed there from 08/17/11 - 08/31/11 and were able to reserve their Deluxe Club Level Room. However just because we had a reservation prior to that discount coming out we couldn't add it onto our original dates since it was being offered during that time, although it worked out for the better that we switched our dates around.
