Conflicting reports of Swine flu reported at DisneyWorld

I hope people suffering from allergies don't sneeze while in line..everyone will run the other way. But then again..that could be a good thing..you'll have the ride to yourself.

I was thinking the same thing. My daughter and I have been sneezing for weeks due to the pollen despite taking Zertec. I am afraid that if we are still sneezing in a few weeks that we will scare people into a panic!

i was thinking of that, too! i was seriously thinking of putting a sticker on my son every morning that says, "I have seasonal allergies"!

Just got back from WDW last Friday. I have to tell you...yes, there were lots of people, no, I wasn't concerned about Swine Flu, were there people there with it? Most likely. But, my dd and I washed our hands continually, we kept our hands away from our faces.
Someone is going to be contagious before they ever start being symtomatic. What are people supposed to do?? Just assume they have a disease and not go anywhere?? You are all aware of the nasty germs that are out there, every single day, aren't you?? Take normal precautions and you'll be fine.

Oh...we have two middle schoolers here in Mass, who returned from Mexico over the weekend. They are sick, both of them, with flu-like symtoms. Their parents are fine...at least they were a few hours ago. The swabs were taken early yesterday (to the best of my knowledge) and there still has been no definitive word as to whether it's Swine Flu or not. The CDC has been swamped with test requests for this. Although my dd, 15, is panicking because she has friends who just returned from Mexico, I am not. Told her to avoid anyone who is ill and to wash her hands every hour or so..and keep those hands away from her face. That's all you need to do.

I thought the same thing! I have seen several comments on this thread alone about people saying my kid (or other family member) had the flu on our last trip but it wasn't bad enough to keep them confined to the room. :confused3 Honestly people have some consideration for others! If you or your child gets sick on vacation STAY IN YOUR ROOM!

These people aer describing situations that occurred before the current media blitz concerning the swine flu. Very few people are going to quarintine themselves while at Disney World for a minor illness under normal circumstances.

I agree extra caution should be exercised in cases of a possible outbreak. That being said, under normal circumstances, such as those that previous posters have described, if you are afraid of being around illness, you probably should never go to WDW, or the mall, or a school, or the grocery store, certainaly not on an airplane.

Breaking news they might have a vaccine!!!!!!!!!!!

How is this "breaking news" or even half-exciting news?

Even if a vaccine were available, do you realize how long it would take to manufacture an adequate amount of it to immunize any statistically significant number of people? Or the time it would take to actually develop an immunity with it?

Currently, with the feared speed at which this is spreading, a vaccine means nothing.

WoW Way to rain on my parade..All serious aside I wonder if people have been seen with mask at Disneyworld

I am talking about any stomach flu with vomiting etc.

I read a trip report from last winter where a whole family had the "flu" and continued to visit the parks even though they were all throwing up! They'd use the bathroom to be sick in and then go on the rides. Just didn't make sense to me that anyone would want to expose other people to their bug like that. I also can't imagine wanting to drag around a sick child. I'm no germaphobe and I'm not cancelling my trip next week. I just think folks need to show more common sense!

True, they said it would take several months to have a vaccine ready for use. By then the whole stinking swine flu will be gone!:lmao: Best advice is still what the cdc is recommending...wash your hands (long enough to sing Happy Birthday twice) and cover up when sneezing or coughing. :thumbsup2

If they were, they're not accomplishing anything except looking silly. The pore size on those masks is too large to keep viruses out.

Exactly. Take as many preventative measures as you can.

Some people say "who cares, it's only the flu", and to a certain extent, they're right. If you're relatively young and healthy, even if you get infected the symptoms you'll have will be no different from any other flu infection, and you'll recover after a few days or a week. It's the elderly, infirm, and people with compromised immune systems that can get hurt by influenza.

The WHO and CDC aren't as concerned about flu symptoms as they are about rapid spread of the disease, because that means more people susceptible to its symptoms get afflicted - which means more people die from it.

While it may be technically accurate that the virus molecule itself is smaller than the pore size of the mask, medical masks do provide an important basic layer of protection -- Airborne viruses commonly travel through the air on tiny water droplets (that's why its so important to cover a sneeze or cough -- and, as our kids are now taught in school, to do so not into your hand, but into your arm near the underside of the elbow). So while I agree that masks are far from representing a complete virus-barrier, they can make it more difficult for germs to pass from individual to individual.

True, if viruses were spread as single molecular units. However, when viruses are airborne, they're usually floating in water droplets that CAN be filtered by masks.

I have wicked flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, congestion, chills, bone aches, nausea, etc.) at the moment which are definitely NOT swine flu, cause I don't know a soul who has been near any of the confirmed cases/locales.

But I'm breathing on you through the intertubes right now. :lmao:

Seriously, you can get sick anywhere. I work with seventh graders, and I can guarantee they pass me germs 2-3 times a class. (Mostly on their turned in papers after they wipe their noses with their hands, or cough or sneeze, and then hand me their homework. Although there are other, much more disgusting examples I could share if I wasn't already feeling nauseous.)

We get annoyed if the government doesn't tell us about threats. But as the media is persistently demonstrating, too much information can just cause a panic. Go to Disney World, follow basic sanitation. I only get about 1% of what my little cherubs bring to school, current situation notwithstanding. Chances are, you won't even get a sniffle by sharing space with other tourists.

No kidding!:lmao: I used to teach Kindergarten and my little students loved to give me "presents"....you know, strep throat, colds, the flu! I was determined to disinfect my classroom and it did work as we were the only class in the school who wasn't as sick as everyone else! Now I make my own kids wash their hands realllllly well! Lots of soap and lots of scrubbing.:goodvibes

Actually, when we were in WDW the week right after Easter we did see one person (DH recalls a middle aged Asian woman - all I can recall noticing was the mask itself). I'd take a guess that there are a few more masked folks now...probably pictures we'll see on the news soon...

Here is some concise and common-sense info that I just read on AskDr.Sears.com --

The CDC’s website is www.CDC.gov/swineflu/ . There you can read all sorts of timely and useful information about what it is, where it is, how to prevent it, and how to seek care if you suspect it.
In a nutshell, here are a few highlights:
• There is currently no vaccine for humans for the swine flu. There is one for pigs.

• The current common flu vaccine used in humans does NOT protect against the swine flu.

• There are anti-viral medications for anyone with a confirmed case available for children age 1 year and older, and adults.

• The symptoms are the same as the regular flu. It isn’t clear why there have been more fatalities than expected in the Mexico outbreak.

• This particular strain of the swine flu seems to be a naturally-occurring cross breed of the human flu, an avian flu, and 2 types of the swine flu.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO DO THEIR PART AND STAY HOME IF YOU ARE ILL WITH FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS, COVER YOUR MOUTH IF YOU SNEEZE OR COUGH, WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY, AND CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR AND ASK ABOUT BEING TESTED FOR THE SWINE FLU IN THEIR OFFICE WITHOUT INFECTING EVERYONE ELSE THERE.

Flu is a respiratory illness. There is no "stomach flu". Those illnesses are caused by different kinds of viruses.
