Conflicting reports of Swine flu reported at DisneyWorld

I did just hear on the news that there may be 2 confirmed deaths in CA from swine flu.
:(

NO, they are NOT confirmed. I'm watching CNN right now and they are saying that they are just TESTING 2 men that died, it is not confirmed and the testing is pre-cautionary. They said it many many times that is not confirmed.

I'm so sorry to hear this!! What a horrible and completely preventable tragedy!

Especially since it was his 7th offense, he didn't even have a license or insurance but that didn't stop him from getting on the freeway going the wrong way.

I did say MAY BE in my post.

Any report on the ages, circumstances, or anything else?

ETA: Nevermind, I just saw they were 33 and 45.

Two Possible Swine Flu Deaths Probed in Los Angeles County

April 28, 2009

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County Coroner's officials say they are investigating two deaths that may have been related to the swine flu outbreak.

Bellflower Medical Center reported the death of a 33-year-old Long Beach man Monday afternoon from symptoms resembling swine flu, according to Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey.

The second case involves a 45-year-old man from La Mirada, whose death was reported Monday to the coroner's office. The man died April 22 at Coast Plaza Doctor's Hospital in Norwalk.

The coroner's office planned to collect specimens from the deceased and send them to the county public health department. The health department would then determine whether the men died from the swine flu, Harvey said.

If confirmed, this would mark the first swine flu-related deaths reported in the U.S.

So far, 13 cases of swine flu have been reported in California.

I do think this could be real serious. They have been watching for a pandemic for a long time. Again, I'm hoping that it goes away, and I wouldn't change vacation plans yet, but it bears watching.

The swine flu is just another strain of flu that travels fast... as long as you're healthy, you'll be fine. There's no reason to panic!

According to my great-aunt who works with the CDC.

And hey, while in Disney I'd rather have swine flu than norovirus!!! :scared1:

It would be better than the chicken-pox, which is what I came home with last year.

Interestingly enough these are in Los Angeles County. If they are found to be linked to Swine Flu it would further the theory someone posited earlier about people exposed to high levels of air pollution may be predisposed to more severe reactions within the lungs.

That is heartbreaking and maddening at the same time! I'm so sorry! I lost a friend the same way - 3rd offense, which just made no sense to me at all.....

As for swine flu, I just saw something come up again that it HAS been confirmed in Orlando now? :confused3

OK, poor guy is taking quite a beating....

Will know in about 48 hrs - right now it's all seasonal flu. Doesn't know how many cases have been sent to CDC for testing from other hospitals.

Let's face it - an airport like MCO, with people flying in/out from all over the world. It's gonna hit Orlando. Be careful, take precautions, and have fun on Space Mountain!!!! :thumbsup2

Space Mtm will be closed when I get there in 17days...:-(

I am going no matter what! I will just be extra carefull!

Add one more to that list. We just lost a beautiful girl (2 days before her 19th birthday) to a stupid drunk driver. Maybe the news should focus a little more on these people.

I am so very sorry for your loss.:sad1:

I am from the UK and we are due to fly out to WDW on 23rd May. If you were to see our news reports over here you would think the world is coming to an end! I find it so irresponsible for the news reporters to be worrying people to this extent.

I am not worried about this flu as we are sensible and know what precautions to take but I am worried about my flight getting cancelled.:headache:

Hmmmm I have not read all the posts in this thread. I will say that when we went to WDW recently my 16 year old got a flu...she was ill the last three days we were there. It was not enough to keep her down...she took meds and still went to the parks. :

And I wonder how many other people she infected while she was there ?

I would have been in the parks to. Some people's lives come to a halt when they get a sniffle. Not mine. That doesn't mean that I don't exercise some caution: cover mouth/nose when coughing or sneezing; frequent hand washing; etc.

Now if I suspected that I had some highly infectious, possibly pandemic causing virus, that would be a different story.

Definately not panicking here!!

wow..not sure that is a fair statement...:confused3

It IS true, though. Not to fault the girl, because I think almost all of us do this. The way our society is, we don't really have time to be sick. I know I have gone to work not feeling well many times because of our illness policy at work (and I take care of critically ill babies!). Before I get flames, I WILL not go to work with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, regardless of the consequences.

Back in Little House on the Prairie days, stuff that went around would kill you, so they did quarantines all the time. Nowadays, we pretty much are expected to go, go, go, even though most people like to say "Stay home if you are sick". Hopefully nothing that serious will come of this, but if something that kills a majority of people who get it comes around, I think we'll all have a different mentality about "staying home when you are sick".

We live in OK, a state sandwiched between two states that have confirmed cases (KS and TX) QUOTE]

Frankly, I'm not so sure we don't already have a big outbreak of this stuff in OK, and probably other states. Unless they specifically test for the swine flu strain, they have no way of knowing what strain of flu a person has. Plus, I heard the press conference online this morning and the doctor said that all they could tell from the test results at the hospital was the guy in Florida had Influenza A (which is common), but they had to send it to CDC before they would know if it is the swine strain of Influenza A. So short of all doctors actually sending everything to CDC, it doesn't look like they would know which flu someone has. I know at least 4 families in the OKC area who have been hit by the flu in the past week and a half, none of whom have contact with each other. One of my friends that has the flu right now said her doctor told her yesterday that they thought flu season was just about over and now the doctor's office is extremely busy and overloaded with patients that are suffering from the flu. So something is definitely going around OKC. Swine flu has the same symptoms as any other flu, and I know my friend wasn't tested, so without specific testing who knows. A lot of people who have the flu don't even go to a doctor. Any kind of flu is bad, so aside from the fact that it will spread faster and to more people, I don't know that getting the swine flu is any different than getting any other kind.

lvstich-- That is horrible and heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I am a nurse, I am not afraid to be around sick people, but the reason I am not going to disney now is because of the people we have seen posting who won't let an illness "get them down". These people are infecting the rest of us so we can bring it home to our friends and family. Why do you think they are closing schools; to try to contain the spread of the disease. Everyone needs to make their own decision about their planned vacations, but please out of an abundance of care, please do not go to the park if you have temperature, even if is being controlled by meds, you are still infectious.

And I wonder how many other people she infected while she was there ?

I thought the same thing! I have seen several comments on this thread alone about people saying my kid (or other family member) had the flu on our last trip but it wasn't bad enough to keep them confined to the room. :confused3 Honestly people have some consideration for others! If you or your child gets sick on vacation STAY IN YOUR ROOM!
