**CONFIRMED** Rumor About the Resort Refillable Mugs!

They would actually go through the expense of offering paper cups with chips? Wow.

It's actually getting dirt cheap to do this. The cost over a regular cup is pretty small and considering ALL the profit on soft drinks etc is in the cup they probably can make money by getting people to buy more cups (Yes, I know folks just reuse the same cup all day LOL!)

Well I for one am thrilled that the refillable mug busybodies won't have to worry about people abusing the system anymore. This will give them more time to patrol the parking lot for people leaving their car who aren't staying there and then going to a theme park.

Hopefully there won't be chips on the water. We DO bring an old mug (GASP!!!!) for my 2 yr old to get water (he isn't allowed to drink any of the other stuff and milk is not in a dispenser.) I am not trying to cheat the system, but I am not paying $15 for my 2 yr old to have a cup (that looks like everyone elses in the family) to drink water out of and keep him happy if I don't have to. Of course if they changed the mug design or had resort specific mugs I might!

I'm not sure "worry" is the correct word...I think its obvious reading these boards that it annoys the daylights out of some people. Keep in mind that if the "rule" is the mug is for "that visit only" and someone brings it back again and again and again, then basically they're stealing from Disney.....and that means that Disney has to keep raising the prices, so in essence it does make a difference to others. Same as when some punk steals food from the store....YOU are eventually going to be paying for his food because the store will have to keep raising prices to make up for the food that has disappeared.

For me...don't care about the drinks cause we don't drink soda...so as long as they don't start charging for a cup of ice and water, I'm good. But, yeah, it can be annoying to know that others are cheating the system and that I'm going to eventually have to pay for them......same frustration I feel over those who cheat the tax system.....or those who use the ER because they don't have health insurance, because that makes my ridiculous health insurance price go up, and my taxes too...so double whammy, because someone thinks they deserve something the rest of us don't. Same frustration many feel when they spend an hour staking out a spot for the parade and some idiot shoves his way with his kid into your spot. Or those who make 5 ADRs for the same day because they don't know when/where they're going to want to eat, so they make a bunch to keep their options open....but that means the rest of us can't get a reservation at these places....and when they don't show up at 4 of them, Disney has empty tables....which means higher prices eventually because they had employees standing around, and food that may be wasted.

I think the point is, I doubt people spend their vacation obsessing over all this...but they certain seem to get annoyed about it.

hmmmm...and I guess we could say the same about you rustyanchor....because it apparently bothers you that people are annoyed about this, or you would have just moved on to another thread instead of made a rude comment, lol.
I didn't think my comment was rude to anyone personally, so I'm very sorry if you took it that way. As for your argument, I figured someone was going to say that, but really, I SERIOUSLY doubt that the amount of soda that people re-using mugs are drinking is making any dent in Disney's budget. And even if no one reused the mugs, the prices and price increases would be the same, you and I both know that. It's in no way comparable to people abusing health care resources (which trust me, I understand and witness firsthand constantly, since I work in an ER at a not-for-profit hospital!). Health care is at least something a little more worth getting worked up over than reusable mugs, but either way it's just raising your own blood pressure and doing you no good in the end! And no, this thread is definitely not something that is bothering me... I find it mildly amusing at best. I just never even realized it was that big of a deal until I started reading these boards. But it does remind me of a "hall monitor" mindset, which is why I referenced that. I have never had much patience for that sort of thing.

What goes around, eventually comes back around, eh? :dance3:
Sorry... I don't understand what this is supposed to mean.

I've always thought the "refillable mugs"were a joke anyway.Capacity too small, too far(most of the time for us)to go for 4 measley little drinks, and we don't do coffee:confused3...Soooo for us it's just about useless. We order our drinks and water from Garden Grocer,or hit the local Wal-mart.;)

Do people actually worry about this very much? If so, they need to get a life and put things in perspective. I don't reuse the mugs but I don't care if anyone else does, it's really none of my business. I'm not the Disney resort hall monitor. :rolleyes2

It was more of a humorous comment, but I'm sure someone out there does. Oh well. It seems like this is happening; I doubt we'll see an official announcement; it will probably just show up at the resorts one of these days.

We go to WDW enough that we have several of each design now. My thought would be to bring a "preowned" mug and pay a few dollars at check in to use it. I would be more than happy to reuse my "preowned" mug and not have so many of the same design at home. Recycle our mugs! As a new deisign came out I would have the option to purcase the new design if I liked it or continue to use the preowned one until it needed to be replaced. Just a thought...

Oh I know, I didn't mean any disrespect towards you! I was just speaking in general terms about the whole mug debacle. I appreciate you posting the information.

Really? If Disney didn't think that there was a problem with people reusing the mugs without paying, why would they be putting these new measures in place? While the cost of the RFID isn't high per piece, it IS an expense for Disney....why would they bother if they didn't feel that there was some money being lost without this technology?

First of all, we don't even know FOR SURE that they are doing it. They tested it awhile back and haven't put it into use as of yet, so for all we know, they determined that it wasn't worthwhile. Secondly, if it were THAT big of a loss, there are a lot of other things they could/would have done a long time ago (find some way to "mark" the mugs for the length of your stay, have CMs enforce the rules more strictly, change the mugs more often, even do away with the mugs entirely and have you pay for each drink). If it is happening, I bet it's more a matter of, "We're going to use the RFID for everything now, here's another cool way to utilize the technology that might make us some extra cash" rather than, "We're losing MILLIONS on stolen soda every year!!! We have to do something!!"

EDITED:

Done engaging you...you know best. Bye

I can't imagine the cost associated with putting chips in their disposable cups. They must go through many thousands a day. That seems crazy. It would be way more expensive that the soda that comes out of those machines. Fountain soda is very cheap to produce.

So what will Disney do about the people that have the very, very old mugs. You know that ones that were sold initially, not under the length of stay rules? I really can't be bothered with all these rumors. When something happens, we will all know about it.

I remember reading that the chips cost less than a penny to produce. Not sure how that is possible, but I read it somewhere during the ASSpo test period.

My engineer tells me the chip is very simplistic and definitely less than a penny to produce.

I was at Typhoon Lagoon on the 4th of July and saw these mugs in action. Each soda dispenser machine had a scanner and you had to scan your mug (which had a chip on it) before the machine would dispense the beverage into your mug. I never saw it anywhere else but there at Typhoon Lagoon.

Was it a barcode or RFID chip? They have had the barcode ones in use for a couple of years now.

I'm ok with this as long as they sell different designs once in a while. I literally have over 20 mugs that are that same beach design and it's just getting kinda old....;)

No disrespect taken! All good!:thumbsup2

What if they changed the design each year to match the 2013-dated merchandise in the parks. That would be pretty cool!
