Confirmed New Security measures coming to Disney Parks

Just joining in now. My local park has metal detectors so whenever I first went to Disney in a very long time I was surprised that they didn't have metal detectors (or Universal, or even LEGOLAND come to think of it, I don't even remember there being a bag check!). I understand completely that if any park were to need them it is most likely the Florida parks, but what baffles me is why now? I know there's been a lot on plates now with the Paris attacks and the Tunisia tourism terrorist incidents but as far as I'm aware no threats have been made to the parks themselves. The last such incident I heard was when someone accidently left their gun on Dinosaur. Is there a specific reason?

By the way I guess I owe Universal an apology for all the metal detector jokes I've told about them

I'm just glad they are not trying to force everyone thru the metal detectors. That would cause some truly horrendous back ups. Random I can deal with.

Seems there may be some legitimate threats that the national security team is concerned about. They have been talking to the theme parks for awhile and had a press release about it last night.

From what I have heard they are starting small and will increase as time goes on.

So for now they are just "profiling" or as they call it random selection. How long before we hear of a huge uproar over who they choose for extra screening?

Just read through the 9 pages and so many posts I wanted to reply to but I'd be here all day/night if I did!

Lockedoutlogic - could "discuss" this with your for hours again like we did once before many years ago :P

In summary, my thoughts on this are:

  1. WDW is such an obvious target I'm surprised its taken this long for them to react
  2. DLRP is even more of an obvious target with its ties to America whilst being right in the middle of Europes terrorist hot zone right now.
  3. If WDW didn't react and they had received a prior warning and had not reacted, would any appropriate business insurance they have pay out? Likewise how would courts react regarding damages claims by victims families?
  4. What about Disney Springs? New years eve even with the lack of entertainment there these days that place will be absolutely rammed full of people.
  5. I've long thought and still do that Disney Springs needs to become gated. Maybe not paid but a form of controlled entrance where they can deploy security if there is a threat and where they can prevent people entering if needed.
  6. Those who say they're "done with WDW" following the introduction of these scanners - where are you gonna go instead? It seems eventually all parks and venues will go this way. So your choice is to either except this or live without going to any theme parks or entertainment venues in the future.
  7. As for whether this is temporary - weren't bag checks supposed to be temporary to start with?
  8. On the subject of it only being mentally ill or extremists who carry out such attacks and so all others should be allowed to carry - wouldn't it be nice if it was actually this simple/black&white? Life isnt like that. Someone who's carrying, who's having a very bad day and then someone pushes them over the edge could easily make the wrong judgement call. A lot of the American mass shooting incidents seem to fit that exact scenario.
  9. The test track incident - I dont know if any of those were carrying a weapon or not, but if they were it could have escalated further. If you gonna have a fight like that in public then you're already at the point of risking arrest/jail time and have accepted that and believe "its worth it" - are people in that situation really thinking that a short jail time for their actions is fine but they would not escalate that in case it resulted in long jail time? I doubt that.
  10. Oh and finally, they need to ensure this doesnt result in accusations of discrimination. Some method of true random sampling is needed - an automated method somehow.

Just joining- does anyone have any idea how this might affect people on crutches/in wheelchairs? I just had hip surgery and can't walk so I'm wondering how much extra time I might need to build into my schedule :/

My guess is that the people selected will be people with over stuffed cargo shorts on. Lol

Sadly that will not be the only people asked to step aside. I wish it were but won't be. They will pull anyone who is wearing apparel that could potentially hide anything. They need to go all in and make everyone go through the scanners. If you fail you go to the side for further screening.

DLP has had more security and things like this for a while now.

I don't know how you could enforce this at Disney Springs because it is a mall and has many entrances. American Malls don't have you walk through scanners to get in.

From what I have heard this is temporary for now at least till marathon weekend but could become more permanent.

Yes, the clothing worn was what I meant. I do not think they will racially profile because that would be pretty stupid. I've seen people with pockets twice as full as I could ever get my bag. Those will be people I hope they check. Lol

lol

I actually think this is good. I know people want to avoid the bag line but I think people stuffing their pockets defeats the point of the bag check

Well I guess you don't understand what I am saying.

We went to DLP in July this year (post Charlie attack but before recent attacks - but at the peak of the migrant crisis) and the security was an absolute farce. There were no metal detectors at that point, just the long standing bag scanners.

For those who dont know, with DLP being contained in one location a little like DLR, they've put fence around the parks and Disney Village so that you only have to pass through bag check once. If you're staying at the DLH you only have to pass through it when you arrive at the hotel, after that you're inside the fence. The entrance/exit to Disney village near the train station seemed quite badly manned and there for put the entire bag check process at risk.

Maybe they've improved it since July, I dont know.

Several years ago (but after 9/11) I took a trip back to Scotland to visit my family. At the time I had a (rather scruffy) beard. I was pulled out of line 3 separate times in 3 separate airports for additional "random" bag checks. This is the only time I have ever been pulled out of line for something like that. It didn't happen on the way back (when I was neatly shaved) and it has never happened since either on international or local flights.

I matched a profile that day.

They would never admit it, but they will profile.

I have no doubt that airports do it, but if Disney did it, and it was noticeable that that was what was happening, the backlash would be insane. They aren't that stupid.

My dad has always looked like he could be a middle eastern bearded man. His grandmother was Cherokee. He's been looked at sideways and spoken to inappropriately on a number of occasions. Luckily, no one has started any real trouble with him. He is pretty much always armed anyways, though. Lol

Disney are just subcontracting this out to a security company. CSC is I believe the name that is being bandied about.
