How do renters call and confirm their reservations? Do they call the resort directly with their date, name and reservation number? I know they can't call member services. Is the reservation in CRO?

I have email confirmation from MS, but not written confirmation. How can my renter verify the reservation?

Thanks.

The renter cannot verify/confirm the reservation until just a few days prior to arrival. At that time, the reservations are downloaded to the resort from the reservation systems. The renter can call the resort directly at that time and ask to confirm.

The reservation is not in CRO/WDWTC - it's part of the DVC reservation system.

Renting requires trust - the owner makes the reservation in the renter's name and should receive a confirmation letter from MS. That should be forwarded to the renter. It is true that a dishonest owner can cancel the reservation at any time and the renter will not know until arrival. However, there have been only a few (1 or 2) reported cases of fraud here on the DIS among the thousands of transactions that have completed successfully.

If the renter is not comfortable enough with the owner to accept the confirmation letter and the process, then he/she should not rent. Better to go directly through Disney than to freak/stress out over the possibility that the owner is a dishonest person. JMHO, YMMV.

You can't....or rather, you can't until its pretty much too late to do much about it. A few days before you travel, you can call the front desk, but if the reservation isn't there, there won't be much you can do other than to call CRO and make some arrangments, and try and reach your owner to see what happened.

The sheet from the owner is the only way until a couple of days ahead when the person can call the resort direct.

Basically, they can not verify the reservation independent of you. The email confirmation from MS should suffice until your printed confirmation from MS arrives. Other than that, they can call the resort only a few days prior to their scheduled arrival date. CRO does not have access to DVC reservations, and th resorts don't get them until it is download to their computer shortly before arrival.

Since renters have not made the reservation thru DVC or CRO, they have no way to confirm a reservation except thru the member from which they are renting.

CRO has no way to look at DVC reservations and the resorts do not see the DVC reservations until a few days prior to arrival.

Renters can call the resort directly a few days before arrival (I'd suggest about 3 days prior) and the front desk should be able to find the reservation in their name, but otherwise they will be dependant on the member for all information/confirmation about the reservation. Basically the member is assuming the responsibility of being a rental agent. I would make this fact very clear to your renters prior to accepting any funds just so they are aware of the situation in advance.

Good luck! :)

Thanks everyone. I rented points I will not be able to use and I have sent contracts and emails that I received from DVC.

You are right, it is a matter of trust. But considering my high number of posts on dis and my length of time on dis, I would think that should speak for itself.

If I have problems, I think I will just tell a renter that they should either consider another owner or rent directly from Disney.

I rented points prior to joining DVC and it was always a positive experience.

The other option would be to do a conference call with the renter and MS. You call MS, give your security info, and then bring the renter into the call.

A conference call might be adviseable for arrangement-making reasons alone, but it has the added benefit of confirming there is, in fact, a ressie in the renter's name. It's an excellent way of making DME and DDP arrangements for the renter, because they are right there to clear up any questions MS has.

A conference call is not really any protection for the renter. If you were a crook, you could hang up, call back, and cancel the ressie right out from under them. But you're not, so that's not going to happen.

I also have rented points to others. I find good communication really puts both parties at ease.

The other thing you could do, as the member, is to screen shot the DVC member page and send that around the time of final payment or something with an email that says "I confirmed today your reservation is still in place."
