Confessions of an Over-planner: Seeking Plan Advice

airtime said:
I'll try to help, but I need to be up front with these disclaimers: (1) I am a major coaster geek (see avatar!) (2) I usually stay off-site at WDW. (3) I am an expert primarily on January in Orlando, and not peak seasons. (4) I have not visited WDW since January 2004.

Wow! Thanks for all the tips! You really took the time to answer a lot of my questions, and I appreciate it so much!!

June 11 - all sounds good except for one thing: evenings can be quite good at MK, and there is EMH that evening that goes until 2 am.

Didn't realize there were late hours that night. Maybe we will explore! See, I knew I bought that extra day of passes for a reason!

June 12 - this sounds good, although I would encourage you to be adventurous about the Disney coasters. If you've tried them and don't like them, hey, you know better than me!

Oh, I like them fine, so does dh. DD will probably like them, though she was too little last time. Just want to spend some time getting ds acclimated. He can be a mouse or a superhero, and it just depends on whether he decides to be scared. So we thought we'd skip it the first day and build up his confidence.

Also, POTC will be closed - sorry!

GASP! Please, say it isn't so!!! Thanks for the warning. I would have cried. For real. At Disney. Which would have sucked.

Last thing on this day: you got the naps in. Don't be afraid of keeping your kids at the park until closing. Mine handled power trips to WDW and DL at very young ages with late nights with no problem (so long as they got their naps!) The late night park time can be great for avoiding crowds, and can be very magical.

Hmmm.... sounds scary. And yet... intriguing.

M:S is an intense spinning ride, and if you have serious motion sickness problems, you should probably avoid it. However, I think anyone who doesn't have that kind of problem should not miss it.

Well then. I should DEFINITELY miss it. Unless these other friendly people going that week like *ahem* messed up shoes.

I also think you are too worried about the effect TT will have on you. There's really nothing there that will induce motion sickness. The kids will love TT - I would be shocked if they didn't.

Everyone seems to be saying that. I may have to read about it again.

You should be able to fit everything in. Door to door will take some time - I would allow an hour one way. Nevertheless, in by 9 am, out by 1 pm, 3 hour nap, back by 5 pm should work OK, although Epcot will be busy in the afternoon because of evening EMH. You should use that to your advantage, perhaps enjoying some Future World attractions in the evening.

Thank you! That's very valuable info! Since we plan to stroll the World Showcase in the afternoon and early evening, hopefully crowds won't be much of an issue.

Morning EMH today at AK, so you'll want to arrive an hour earlier than you planned. KRR won't be open yet when you get there unless the wait for the safari is incredibly long (that could happen, since only it and ITTBAB will be open among the major attractions). Your kids should love Dinosaur. Just make sure they understand that a lot of the ride is in the dark. My kids never had a problem here. Also, even if you don't ride KRR, you should check out its queueing area. It's very cool.

Again, fabulous info! You're very helpful!

Also, just my two cents again: I think you should try EE. This promises to be an incredible ride. Again, you know your own limits, but setting aside fear for these things can make your vacation more memorable than you can possibly imagine.

If I think DS is up to it by then, maybe we'll add it in. But won't passing up EE help with the line for the safari? (More people running there than running to the safari?)

More and more I think I'm the wrong one to give advice. :confused3 If you have motion sickness problems, I would think Star Tours would be one to worry about.

Oddly, I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt, no tummy troubles. Doesn't phase me. My motion nausea is mostly really fast spinning (no teacups on my list, thank you very much), or driving. Just in the car. Boats and planes don't do it. Which is why I thought no Test Track - it's a car, and no Mission:Space - it's spinny. Maybe I'm off my nut on the test track thing. Don't think I am on M:S, though. Or I might be chicken.

RnRC is a very intense coaster - definitely the most intense at WDW - and isn't for those with weak backs especially. ToT is a huge mistake to miss, IMO. The visual effects are incredible, and the drops are not nearly as scary as your mind makes them because of the incredibly well-done theming. ToT is one of the best theme park attractions in the world. I would be darn sure that I wasn't up to it before passing on it. Again, you know better than I do of your capabilities.

Hmmm... Sounds like RnRC may be too wild for a six year old (and he might not even make height for it? Not sure...) and trust me on the elevator thing. I've been thinking of trying ToT, but if I so much as bring it up, I get shrieks and refusals. From dh. Yes, he shrieks. But don't tell him I said so.

They should be glad to hold your luggage for you.

Phew! I'd hate to drive back with the dvd player not functioning.

Sounds like a great trip. It looks like you have tried to use restraint in your planning, keeping from trying to pack to much into too little time. In terms of that, I commend your choice of napping in the afternoon. This will both help to avoid crowds and keep you fresh. I would use that extra rest to stretch more into the evening hours. The later you go, the lighter it gets.

Thanks!! You've been an awesome help!

Yes, change to Toy Story, never stayed at ASMovie but from the map looks just as close as Fantasia which I assume is the prefered location. You will save money not doing the prefered, you'll be just as close (make sure you put in your request now for where you want your room) plus your DS will love it if he loves Toy Story.

Do they usually honor building requests? Cause I'd hate to ditch preferred and end up WAY back in like Lovebug or something.

Do Soarin' first thing, you may if the line is short ride right away then get fast passes when you exit, you will want to ride it again, it is one of my new favorites!

ANOTHER great idea! I'm so glad I posted this thread! Thanks!!

OMG!!! Did you say you were not going to stay for Illuminations? :furious:
I'm sure that was a typo! Don't miss it please!

:scared: Ack! Sorry, sorry! LOL. I just thought too many late nights might make it hard to do all those early mornings! I take it Illuminations is pretty good, huh? Actually, Fantasmic is the only Disney fireworks I've ever seen.

Take Disney transportation, we had ADRs for Boma our day at AK and traffic was horrible at that time with the park closing, but the bus we took, took a special exit out of the parking lot, attendants had to move cones to let the bus through and by passed the line of traffic out of the park.

But we'll probably go back to ASM before dinner... still better to go the bus route?

Star Tours is great but not a roller coaster. IMO Star Tours need a rehab and an update with Episode I, II and III.

I know, we've ridden it before. But it's dh's absolute favorite attraction. And I like it. And the kids are newly Star Wars fans since the last trip.

You can leave your bags at luggage assistance if you want, they will hold on to your bags after check out till you leave.

Great! Thanks so much!!

No real advice, just wanted to say that DD 11 and I will be there (for the first time!) the same dates as you, staying in ASMo and requesting the Toy Story building. Have fun!

You have fun, too!!

First, let me say congrats on the planning. You've given this a lot of thought! My family has been so many times now that we just pick a park each day and do whatever we fancy! I always admire those who plan so well!

Thanks! I admire your spontanaiety. I appreciate the good advice on counter service/ ASM cafeteria and the RnRC, too!! Especially about the birds eating outside. We went to Chincoteague once and had quite a scene when our breakfast table got mobbed by some very agressive seagulls!

On one of your MK mornings, go to Toontown about 10-15 minutes before Toontown opens. They generally have 6-8 characters there then. At opening, go get Mickey's autograph, then get in line in the big building for any other characters you want to see.

Umm... Am I a bad mommy if I don't let my kids get autographs? I always just do the picture thing. :confused3

Also you definitly have to see Illuminations, personally I feel its much better then Fantasmic and Wishes. If you can the Italy Isola is the best place to see it.

No kidding? I really liked Fantasmic. All those characters, fire breathing dragon.... Maybe I will check Illuminations out. Thanks!

I have to tell you that we will be there on the exact same week. The only time our paths cross will be your MGM day. We are also doing the Fantasmic package @ Mama Melrose. We've never eaten there so I hope it's good!!

Why am I suddenly overcome with the urge to start singing "It's a Small World"? I think you're the fourth? person to say this is their week! Hope that's not an indicator of the crowds!! :teeth:

June 12 Your plan looks good, but I think I read that Pirates is closed until July. You should be able to do all of those attractions except the 2 shows before lunch and get a FP for Philharmagic right before lunch, see it after.

Yeah, just heard about pirates.

June 13 looks good. We are going the day before. Do test track!! Both my kids LOVE it.

That seems to be the consensus, too!

June 14 - Beware of Dinosaur. My ToT- loving 6 yo was scared to death. We thought Tusker House was fantastic CS. Rainforest Cafe is fun, but took too long.
June 15 - Your kids will like Pizza Planet. Mediocre food but fun place. Avoid ABC Commissary. Also my kids love the Honey I shrunk playground.

Thanks for the tips!!

Enjoy! I'm hoping for brief rain!!!

I'm hoping for nap time rain, myself! You enjoy, too!

I didn't read all of this thread but here's my 2 cents....

Autographs can be fun especially for the 6 yo. Buy one auto book have the characters sign every other page and paste pics across from them when you get home. It's a nice souvenir.

If Buzz is his fav, do BL first thing.

Are you AAA members? We drove last summer and used the AAA diamond lot at Epcot, Ak and MGM. It was nice to walk out of the park and just hop in our car and not have to wait for the bus. You'll get the hang of driving around.

Dissenting vote for Illuminations-my 6 yo definitely loved Fantasmic. I love Wishes. We planned a night for Wishes and slept in the next day and just hung out at the pool.

Not sure how good of a napper you have but my almost 3 yo gave up naps while we were at WDW. I could never get her to just lay down. We did drive around Orlando one day because she fell asleep in the car. lol

Remember not to be TOO stuck to your plan. Have fun, be spontaneous!

We'll be there the week before you. Don't know if anyone mentioned, but POTC will be closed.

Here are my thoughts: I love the changes suggested by the first poster to reply to you.

Stay in Toy Story.

Get your fastpasses before the nap for Buzz.

Do Small World last in Fantasyland.

Eat at Coral Reef in Living Seas in Epcot for lunch. I know that there are some bad reviews, but we love it.

OH, YES, ON CHEF MICKEY! Take the monorail over to MK after.........such fun! Try to get a ride in the front.

Flame Tree Barbecue in AK has a great area back behind for eating.....trees, ducks, paths, it's nice.

Try Test Track. It's easy. Stay away from Mission Space.........I didn't go, dh who has never been motion sick in his life went and was sick for hours. It was the lowest point of our trip.

Have you ever seen Pocahontas in AK? It's very simple, but sweet with real live little animals and some of the songs from the show. Kids get up-front seating. My kids adore it.

I think that's it!

Here's a couple of suggestions. If you don't feel up to a park the first night, I don't blame you. We like to take our first night easy and be ready to go the first morning. If you're going to eat at Chef Mickey's the first evening, take the bus over to MK, ride the monorail to Cont. After eating, ride to the TTC and catch the monorail over to the Epcot station. This could be a great time to try to ride in the front. I love the Epcot monorail ride because you get to see the park without having to actually enter. Then, you can catch the bus back to the resort from there.

If you plan to eat lunch at either Pecos Bills or Cosmic Ray's, you might want to try to eat early or later. Both are crazy at peak lunch times.

Your plan looks great! Have a wonderful trip! pixiedust:

Each time I've stayed at a value they have honored our requests. At ASSp, ASMu and Pop, but we have only gone in value season not June. It is still a just a request. Here is an idea if you are uneasy about not being guarented a room close to the front. Stay with the prefered room and when you get there ask about the rooms available in Toy Story, have them show you where the available rooms are on the map, if any are available, and choose then, they may be able refund you the extra for the prefered, not sure how that would work??? Just throwing that out there, good luck.

I loved your planning. I write similar plans for our trips to keep myself from going crazy during boring meetings. And you're right - it starts to feel like the trip report without the trip!

I agree with the advice to grap the Buzz FP before heading out for a nap.

Another FP thought - you may want to snag them for more of the attractions - for example for one or more of the MK rides you plan to do during your first morning. Then you have them if you need them and you won't have to wait in a long line, but if you don't need them you can give them to someone else. We found it was very easy to do this (with three youngish children) if one parent walked leisurely to the next ride with the kids (or stopped for some ice cream :goodvibes ) while the other parent went ahead to a ride that was slightly beyond, grabbed the FPs, and then circled back to meet the gang in line.

Hi! We're going to be there from 6/13 through 6/20! :teeth: And this is our family's 2nd trip together as well too! And we're trying San Angel Inn for the 1st time because DH has always wanted to eat there.

Anyway, just a few things...

Our DD is the one in our family who is nervous & leery around the big rides. But, she ADORED Kali River Rapids at AK - one of her favorite rides! She did NOT like Big Thunder Mtn Railroad; however, both she & DS loved Goofy's Barnstormer. We didn't try Dinosaur (although DS loves dinosaurs) because both of them were a little nervous on Haunted Mansion - so I figured they'd HATE Dinosaur. We didn't try Test Track, but we're going to this June. Also, they both LOVED Soarin'. It's definitely a don't-miss ride!

MGM was the park we spent the least amount of time in - seeing only the Beauty & the Beast Show & the Little Mermaid Show & then watching Fantasmic that night. (This year, we plan to do the Great Movie Ride & the Studio Backlot Tour, but I was afraid that both of those rides would scare DD last year.) We ate at Pizza Planet too - I didn't think the food was that bad for counter-service, and the atmosphere was fun. A great place to meet & greet w/ Buzz & Woody is Al's Toy Barn.

Regarding Wishes - Oh, you must see it! It's our very favorite show! And the kids loved the Spectromagic parade. Maybe if you don't want to be out too late on your first night, you could plan the parade & fireworks for your last night after you eat at 1900 Park Fare.

On your first night, if you didn't want to go in the park, after you eat at Chef Mickey's, you could take the boat over to Fort Wilderness & catch the camp-fire w/ Chip & Dale & the movie. Or, since you have the tickets, you could go into MK & just soak up the atmosphere for a while.

My kids also enjoyed the Kidcot stops in the WS countries at EPCOT. And we liked eating at Boma too - plan on getting there a little early so you can walk around the resort & look at the animals.

Isn't planning so much fun!! All I seem to think about is our trip!

There's no such thing as an over-planner. :)

Are you sure you want to do Pizza Planet AND the Italian restaurant Mama Melrose on the same day (and probably pretty close together since those Fantasmic! packages tend to be for early times)? Mama Melrose's package has a flatbread as a starter so you're looking at a lot of pizza for one day. Just something to think about.
