Confessions of an obsessive planner... Let the countdown begin!!

Okay, this post is OT and is going to give you another peek of my crazy, obsessive planning but I want to share it somewhere and get some feedback.

With the planning pretty much finished for our WDW trip I needed something else to plan so, even though it's more than a month until we go on this year's trip I've already started thinking about what we'll do for vacation next year. It won't be Disney, which I know is shocking on the DIS boards but it is what it is. Our vacation next year needs to be less expensive than this one plus we just like going different places and seeing different things.

I have our choices narrowed down to three possibilities and they are all very different and have different appeals. I'd like some feedback, especially if you've BTDT!

Option 1: Branson, MO- this is only a few hours from home and we haven't been since Jace was about 2 (Kya stayed with my parents as she was just over a year old) and we only went for a long weekend. I know Robbie will like the fact that it's close to home. We'd probably go to Silver Dollar City, the Dixie Stampede and Ride the Ducks (amphibious vehicles left over from WWII that take you on land and water tours of the area). There's also a strip with bumper boats, mini-golf, go-karts, etc. and the large lake has several swimming beaches that we'd want to spend lots of time on. Plenty of shows and attractions to research and plan so that's fun for me.

Option 2: Galveston, TX- This is the closest beach to us so that's the major appeal. There are a few attractions- they have Ducks as well- but mostly we'd be at the beach, in fact we'd probably rent a house or condo right on the water. It's about a 13 hour drive which is long but doable. There's not a lot for me to plan with this trip but we love the beach and Robbie and I have been, the kids and I have been (with my parents) but we've never all four been together so it would be nice. :goodvibes

Option 3: Chicago- This is about a six hour drive but it's also possible that we'd take the Amtrak and just rely on public transportation once we got there. I've been to Chicago for a girl's weekend with a friend and the El and the buses are pretty easy to maneuver. Kya wants to go the American Girl place and there's a Lego museum that Jace would like to see. The natural history museum and Navy Pier are also big draws. The downside is that I'm not sure how appealing this will be to Robbie. He generally likes a more laid back vacation and since we're doing Disney this year I'd like to do something he'll enjoy more next year. On the other hand I don't know how much longer American Girl and Lego are going to appeal to the kids. Of course there's lots of planning for me to do with this one too. ;)

So, that's it those are the three choices. I know it seems early since we haven't gone on this year's trip yet but since we'll be staying in the midwest and want to swim we'll probably shoot for June for the best weather- warm enough to swim but not sweltering heat for non-water related outdoor fun. All three trips are going to cost about the same within a couple of hundred dollars so money isn't a factor. They all have great appeal and honestly I don't want to make a decision too soon because I like doing all of the research. :rolleyes1 However if we're going to go in June and I want to get a good deal on a nicer place from VRBO I'll have to make the reservation within a few months.

So, not Disney but I'd appreciate some feedback anyway! :thumbsup2

Sorry, Hope.....I can't be of much help as I haven't been to any of those destinations. They all have their advantages!! I'm a big beach girl, so I would like Galveston, TX myself.......;)

I'm also of no help, sorry. :( But DH always talks about how much he loved Chicago when he was there for boot camp or some sort of Navy school. He says he would want to move there if not for the winters. He hates the cold, just like me. Not that that helps because the two before me each said one of the other two. :lmao: But if you don't think Robbie will enjoy it, I would say Branson going off of your descriptions!

1st, I love your shirts! Amazing!!!!
2nd, You've gotten so much done! Good for you!
3rd, Vacation plans. I've never been to Branson so I don't know that much about it. A week at the beach sounds relaxing and fun. Chicago is nice (I like cities) but less relaxing and possibly more expensive. I guess it depends on whether you need a laid-back vacation or a go-go-go type of vacation!

I know. Not much help, am I??? :lmao:

Amanda

I'm not much help either because we're not crazy about beach vacations, we like to be doing something. So I'd probably head to chicago. American Girl and Lego? That just sounds fun to me!

Glad to hear you're that "done" with your disney planning that you can plan other things though!

That's okay Ann- the beach does sound nice, doesn't it!

I'm with you guys on the Chicago winters. I like cold but not THAT cold!

I've not been to any of those places however by your descriptions, I'd pick Branson. :goodvibes

Thanks for the input!

1st, Thank you! :goodvibes
2nd, It's been fun! :yay:
3rd, I don't think Chicago will be any more expensive than Branson and I actually like laid back and go-go type vacations so I guess that's why I'm having such a hard time.

Chicago sounds fun to me too and if it wasn't for Robbie that'd be the one hands down.

I am pretty 'done'. I'll have some last minute things to do when show and parade times are released for our dates but even that will only require a little tweaking.

A friend just dropped by and brought her son to sleep over with Jace and made the suggestion that we do several long weekends. Hmmm...

That wouldn't work for Galveston but it certainly would work for Chicago and Branson. I could also pick a couple of other places if we planned it right. That would give me lots of opportunities to plan (yay!), would give us several trips to look forward to throughout the year instead of waiting all year for just one, and would give Robbie the opportunity to bow out of Chicago but still do some special things with us.

I have to run this by Robbie but it may be the best option- of course a beach free option but we can do Lake of the Ozarks or Table Rock Lake in Branson for beach-like fun. So now a new question:

Would you rather have 3-4 long weekend vacations (3-4 days each) or one full week? Why would you choose that way?

That is a tough question! I would say 3-4 long weekend vacations. One reason I would choose that is because our cat hates being left at home for very long. :lmao: Also I think it would be nice to come home and be able to immediately look forward to another trip and it doesn't feel like forever between vacations!

I asked DH for his opinion and he said he prefers little spurts as opposed to a full week. I can definitely see some pros to one long vacation, though, but shorter, more frequent vacations work best for our family. :)

There are definitely advantages and disadvantages to either.
I personally prefer a longer vacation. My reason? It takes me a few days to get into vacation mode and I need a day to recover before going back to the grind. A week-long vacation gives me time to fully relax.

Both good points. And completely opposite. :lmao::lmao:

As I’m on the east coast I really can’t provide any input to your selections for next year’s vacation. Branson sounds like a lot of fun but so does the beach. I think I’d pass on the city so that your hubby can enjoy it more – I try to play the same compromise game with my family. Oh and I don’t think you are crazy for planning next year’s trip – not only do I have next year planned out but I also have 2012 begun (we are going to go to the Smokies) and I also have binders for other locations with tons of information for future trips I want to take but just don’t have to time to go.

Since we are campers we (I) try to plan one bigger vacation a year so that it feels like I actually got a break but we also do little weekend trips on the cheap.

I love a long vacation, but if I had to pick, I would pick a bunch of small vacations. Just because it feels like you're going on vacation a lot, and really, 3-4 days is enough to make me feel like I've had a break. I love having vacations to look forward to, and fun things to do, and time off with DH, so I would take a bunch of small trips for sure. If I (or DH) had a really intense job like Amanda, then I would probably feel differently, but neither of us does, so we can get into vacation mode by the time we get to our vacation destination. Maybe before!

We went to the Smokies last year and it was BEAUTIFUL!! Be sure to visit Cades Cove- gorgeous!

I love the idea of binders for future/wish trips!! I may have to steal that one. :rolleyes1

We live in the woods so we don't camp much- it's too much like home, lol.

This is the way I'm leaning, for a lot of the same reasons. A few days is all I usually need for a break and Robbie is a workaholic and he gets restless after more than a few days of not working. Plus I'm having fun looking at all the places we can go.

Well, you KNOW how I feel about Galveston! :lovestruc I was in WDW when IKE hit and it was so hard. It's beautiful and not very touristy, which I love. We WILL get back there.

BUT, I think Chicago is a GREAT idea as well! Maybe you should flip a coin or something. :p

Long trip over short ones is my vote. It doesn't seem like a real "vacation" unless it's a week or so!

Well, you guys are really no help!! LOL :lmao: That's okay though- lledman has inspired me to just plan lots of things and see how it goes. :rolleyes1 Since the planning is half the fun I'm just having fun investigating lots of places- the ones I mentioned earlier plus some east coach beaches.

On the Disney front we're slowly starting to get some of the things we ordered. The lanyards came today and yesterday we got the binders for the journals. I'm still waiting for a few things and will post pictures when it all comes in.

Oh, and I added DME to our reservation yesterday thanks to a conversation in Amanda's thread- I'd almost forgotten! :scared1:

I hope you are pleased with the pins you ordered. Who did you end up using?

Your shirts are turning out so cute! They are going to be getting tons of attention while at Disney! :goodvibes

The pins came today and the kids are very happy with them! :goodvibes (pics to follow) I used a seller called travelinwynns. They were the cheapest 'buy it now' pins that were 100% guaranteed to be tradable.

Oh, I was going to post this link if you don't have it: http://www.citypass.com/chicago It is a great way to see Chicago attractions at a lower cost! :goodvibes

Thanks!! :thumbsup2
