I've always wanted to see the Grand Canyon, and this summer it looks like I'll be attending a conference in Phoenix. I could possibly go up a day early & make a trip to the Grand Canyon area, but would that be practical? From what I gather from looking online, it's about a 4-5 hour drive. I'd be happy just to briefly go to a part of the canyon to take a few pictures then leave. Is it possible to do this?

Of course its practical, but if its possible, try and do 2 days there.

Also for fair warning, it'll be packed!

If you can swing it, definitely go! It is well worth it. It is an experience that never leaves you. I've gone about 6-8 times. Sometimes, I've only stayed for several hours as I worked my way over to Sedona & Monument Valley.

Distance wise, it looks like the South Rim would be the best bet. This probably sounds silly, but can you just drive up to the canyon and take pictures or do you have to get on a shuttle or something?

You will need to park.

With that said, parking could be a nightmare. But once you do park, you can just walk to the rim. There is a shuttle that will take you to various spots on the south rim. But, like I said, at the minimum, spend at least a half a day there. TOTALLY worth it! :)

Sounds like the scene from the Griswald's in National Lampoon's Vacation :rotfl:.

Seriously though, most places around that region have helicopter services that will bring you to see it. I know when we were in Vegas there were tons of these services, but I am chicken of heights so I didn't do it. But if you are game it's a great way to manage limited time and get a fantastic view.

I only went for about a day to the Grand Canyon. Definitely worth the trip. It's breathtaking.

You can drive up. From where we parked, it was about a 2 minute walk to the Canyon.

Wow! A helicopter ride sounds great. I'll have to check into that. I know I probably do sound a little Griswold-esque with these questions, but I honestly did try to research it myself. It's just that without knowing the area, all the information was a little overwhelming. I thought surely I could get some expert advice here! :thumbsup2

So about this "nightmare" parking situation - how bad is it likely to be? Like waiting for hours just to get a parking space?

Also, will it be safe for me to travel from Phoenix to the South Rim area alone?

No, it won't be hours, but try to avoid going on a weekend. And yes, you'll be safe! :)

I just parked right at the South Rim. This was in fall/winter/spring, though. I imagine, like most National Parks, they have the parking thing worked out to a smooth science.

Yes, driving from Phoenix to GC is pretty safe.

Yes, I did a helicopter ride too. it was awesome. The laws are such that they do not get to swoop down into the canyon anymore. But the spectacular overview was fabulous. There might be a line though.

Seriously, just find a spot at the rim, sit and take in the beauty. You don't need a lot of bells & whistles for visiting. God has done all that, already.

As for pictures, I went into the Visitors' Center and bought the postcards. The photography is the best. Use your time for taking in the canyon, not looking through a viewfinder.

Oh, and get some Navaho fry bread from the Visitor's Center cafeteria. It is wonderful! :goodvibes

Thanks, you've all reassured me that I can do it. It may be my only chance to see the canyon, even if it's a very brief visit. Unfortunately I'll have to visit on a Saturday, but I'll just have to endure the crowds!
