spinoff from the other thread.
question for anyone that carries, where is the gun when home? is it loaded all the time? when you carry is it loaded?
so in the instance of the person who had someone in their garage, if she had a concealed carry permit, would she have a loaded gun on her?
I always thought the gun was not to be loaded when on your person? maybe I am wrong.
and what about the kids, if you have kids, do you walk around with a loaded gun in your purse.

guns make me nervous, especially with kids in the picture.
just trying to make sense of how carrying a concealed weapon when you also are carrying kids around makes sense.
help me out.

I am very interested in hearing the answers to this as well. As a Canadian, I just don't get the whole carry a gun around thing. I go down to the States once a year to do back to school shopping for my daughter. I don't spend every moment worrying about it but I am conscious of the fact that the person beside me in Target could have a loaded gun in their purse or backpack. It freaks me out.

The ones who are legally carrying aren't the ones you have to worry about.

I have my concealed carry permit, and I generally take it everywhere with me, unless I'm going on base. I don't put it in my purse often, I have a couple different holsters I use. The safety is always on, and it's secure in the holster. I don't worry about being out with kids with my weapon, I know how to use it properly and when the situation calls for deady force, I will take action. If I was robbed, chances are VERY good I'd just hand over whatever they wanted. That's not a situation I'd say was worthy of shooting, imo.

why not? I am really curious about this, not trying to start a debate or anything.
and is the gun loaded when its in your holster?

What good is an unloaded gun, unless you're planning to throw it at somebody? ;) The people I know who have their CHL are always carrying, and it is always loaded, with the safety on.

I'm always in control of my weapon, I'm always aware of where people are in relation to my holster. This was ground into my head from the very first time I fired a weapon (8 years ole) and continued through my training with the military. Yes, my weapon is loaded, but as I said the safety is on andit's secured in my holster. You have to mean to pull it out of the holster, it doesn't just fall out.

I dont understand why people are so afraid of guns and concealment of. Ive alway have been around guns and knew never to touch them. we had guns in the gun rack of the pick-ups. They just dont jump out of the holster and fire on thier own. Ive taught my children to respect them.

I think part of it is different areas of the country maybe?
Texas very different from Massachusetts for instance.

Very true, where I live if we are out in the middle of nowhere it can take 15-20 min for help to arrive, and almost every one has a gun. Heck babies even receive shot guns at baby showers blue for boys and pink for girls. Ive noticed that the crews working on power lines that on some of the pick-ups there is a little green gun decal on the back of the bed meaning that they have a gun with them.

Here's a story in today's local news:
http://www.wfaa.com/news/crime/Intruder-shot-dead-by-Lancaster-homeowner-109108069.html

I can't see anyone having a problem with this. It's probably going to be difficult for the gunowner getting through this emotionally, but the intruder got exactly what he deserved. Never would have happened if he hadn't been where he didn't belong.

Yep. Someone comes in my house uninvited and they are getting shot. Period. Of course, 'round here, the intruder has to be IN my house. I can't shoot them on my property or my doorstep, or even in my barn.

I'd also like to hear the answer to where you keep your gun at home. This is such a timely post for me. After almost 50 years of being in a gun-free home, I felt it was time to get one. It was a difficult decision. I had my first training class last night. I'm a little scared of it (due to ignorance) and it is locked in a safe without bullets right now, but I plan to spend a lot of time at the range and in class learning safety and eventually get a concealed weapon permit.

I have a concealed carry permit and while out the gun is always on my person, in a holster. Its loaded and the safety is on. I can always easily get to it if necessary. 99.9% of the time no one knows I have it on me. They call it "concealed" for a reason.

At home its in the gun safe (we actually have several weapons at home and several safes). All of our safes are biometric (I place my hand on the scanner the safe opens and I take the gun out, or the gun just pops out). Again, gun is always loaded and the safety is on.

I've taken multiple gun classes and go to a shooting range at least once a month, just to keep my skills up.

For home defense, nothing beats a shotgun. Don't have to be very accurate and wont go thru walls like a pistol. If it is a pump gun, just that sound of chambering a round will get someones attention...

I always thought the gun was not to be loaded when on your person? maybe I am wrong.

Why would someone legally carrying a gun around only for self-defense purposes have it unloaded?
Why is this question directed at women? They probably carry it pretty much the same way men do, except some might have it in a purse.

My gun stays in a holster in my purse, beside my bed when I'm is bed, and in my purse in the living room when I'm awake. We have two gun safes, one in the bedroom and one in the office. Both full of guns. I live in the country where if I need help it would take 15 minutes for an officer to arrive. I hope I never need the gun for protection, but I will use it if I have to.

Once you have more training, you will feel more confident with your gun, and feel secure rather than scared.

ETA: I have no children in my home. If I did, my gun would be locked in a safe. Even though my child was raised around guns and learned to shoot at a very young age, I still don't trust children around guns. When I have grandchildren the guns will certainly be locked away when they are visiting.

Its directed at women because as I said in my OP its a spinoff from the thread from a woman talking about an intruder in her garage and several poster suggested concealed carry as the answer.
my question to women is how can you feel comfortable with a baby on one hip and a loaded gun on the other?

I KNOW the gun won't jump out, but it just seems ODD TO ME, to be toting my kids around with a loaded gun on me.
call me crazy, but I am just trying to understand.

and yes, mostly its the moms toting the kids around the majority of the time.
I know dads do too, but its mostly mom with the kids.

So this leads to me next question..........for those of us with young kids in the home what good does a gun locked in a safe do if an intruder surprises us in our home?

This is exactly what I was about to ask. If the gun is nowhere near you, why have one in the first place?
