Computer Savvy? Possible virus on home pc..help!

Ok, I am wondering if I did not get a virus on my home pc. I know that thru yahoo! there was a virus "new graphics.." and it came thru all my yahoo!groups.
Now my computer will not completely boot then just shuts itself down into sleep mode. I cant even get on long enough to run a scan for viruses.
so what to do?

If you are running XP, I would start the system in Safemode, by hitting the F8 Key, I believe. I would then do a System Restore from a date before you got hit by the Virus. This should be done after you have purchased some Virus protection Software, if you don't have any. If you do have antivirus software, see if it is updating it's signature file. I have been using Computer Associaties, Easy Armor product with great success it comes free from my cable provider. I have also been using Microsoft's Defender Beta program for maleware protection, My Firewall is another CA product which names escapes me right now. Easy Armor updates almost every day, and the Microsoft Program runs every night. My system has not been hit in a few months, howerver my kids PCs will pick up a maleware program about once a week due to the sights they hit. The protection has gotten so good that I have taken down my pop-up blockers and Adaware products. System speed is a little better.

We are running windows 98 on our home pc. Only our office pc uses XP. I will try the system restore and see what happens. ty!

I believe the F8 boot into Safe Mode trick pre-dates XP... Give it a try.

The F8 trick will work with Windows 98SE, but there is no built in system restore until Windows 98ME, so you will have to work at getting your system back in working order. Good luck.
