Sorry if this is OT but if I don't have a computer, then I can't access the Disboards! :rotfl:

I have a computer that has 128 MB, 465 MHZ and an Intel Celeron Processor. I am currently running Windows 2000 Pro. I am almost out of memory and I have taken off most files and backed them up to CD. I tried to buy and use one of those nifty new sticks that you plug into the USB port but it won't work. I only have approx. 280 MB left on my c: drive. I am having problems running programs now and couldn't even run maintenance the other day. There isn't much room to compress anything anyway.

My question is: Would it be cheaper to just purchase a new computer or should I just add more memory? I almost dread transferring everything and adding on all of the software and so on but I know I can do it. Also, if I get a new computer, is it likely that the same thing will happen to the new one? This one isn't that old.

TIA for any answers!!!

That's not a lot of RAM and the processor speed is very slow. I don't know what kind of hard drive capacity you have but it sounds like your applications are more sophisticated than your machine. I wouldn't put the money or time into upgrading the memory. I'd invest in a new computer, with at least 512 MB RAM, a processor speed at least in the 2-3 GHz range, and a hard drive capacity of at least 60 GB (but 120 GB or better is preferable).

To move the files and applications from the old computer to the new one, I've use Aloha Bob PC Relocator software and it does a very good job of moving most of them. There are a couple of programs that my DH uses for his business that are protected from being copied from one computer to the next. Those have to be reinstalled manually, but it's not as bad as having to move everything!

Mad4the mouse - thank you so much! That's exactly what I needed to know. I think I am off to buy a new one. Thanks again!!!! :goodvibes

Update: We did buy a new one tonight. I ran around all day trying to find the best one for our needs, keeping in mind what you told me. Thanks again so much. I made sure that the new one had a ton of memory and had a great processor.

I wouldn't have known this without your advice!!!! :goodvibes
