Computer question - system sounds

A few months ago, the normal sounds (start up, error, new messages, etc.) stopped working on my computer.
I have Windows XP and have run the diagnostic stuff in "HELP". Nothing seems to work. I'm afraid in trying to fix it, I may have messed with some settings.
What program should be used to open/play sounds?

Right now, if I go to Control Panel, Sounds and Devices, Sounds and click on a sound, then Browse, it brings up all the system sounds. Then, they all say they are opening with Real One Player. I'm sure that it's wrong, I'm just not sure what to do next.

Edited to add: it plays cd's, anything in windows media, etc.

I would think Windows Media Player.

I just tried that, and it still doesn't work. The other weird thing is I can't get the volume icon to show up in my taskbar, even though it's checked in the sounds properties thing.

*sigh* I guess I'll be paying my computer guy to figure it out. :headache:
