Computer Question and opinions needed! (CD Burner)

We are getting our DS a CD burner for his birthday next week. We have just a few questions and would love to hear your opinions:

We have a Gateway and will take our computer to a Gateway store to have them install it. We have 2 burners we are deciding upon that we found on the Gateway site.

1) Gateway 48-24-48 CD-RW drive $120.00

2) Plextor CD-RW/DVD_Rom Combo Drive EIDE 20-10-40-12 with CROM media cable $143.95

We like the idea of having a DVD player as well but have never heard of Plextor.

We will be using this for DSs burning music, transfering pictures from our digital camera to keep for ourselves and sending to relatives, storing lesson plans when I get my own classroom, and if we decide upon the one with a DVD player checking out the extras from the DVDs we own.

Any help would be great! Thanks in advance!!!

Plextor probably makes the Gateway. If is warrantied (it is) go withthe DVD. JMO.

There is one negative about Plextor. It is the most expensive brand out there for CDRW.

However it is also the best brand out there.

My recomendation is to look for a brand called Lite-On.

It is just as reliable as Plextor and about half the cost.

If you are unable to find it I would trust the reliability of the Plextor. (they are known for not making coasters out of your CD's)

Also if you don't have a problem with purchasing online, you can get the same Plextor drive for $20 cheaper by purchasing white box (same thing same warranty - just no graphics on the box)

coqui....we went to a local computer store and guess what they had? LITEON! We talked to the the computer geek hardware loving person there and he had great things to say about it. Actually, about the exact same things you said! It was half the price, bought a DVD drive as well and will have them all installed there on Thursday. I like using local small businesses when I can!!

We showed it to DS tonight and he was thrilled!

Yes Karen, coqui (or better known to me as Luis) is my husband... I keep forgetting that most don't know that
