Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help. My computer acting weird lately so I went and got antivirus(mine expired a month ago) and sales person told me it is better to reinstall Windows and then install antivirus. Does it sound right, because it seems complicated and I am kind of afraid I can do something wrong.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

No, just uninstall the old one and than install the new one. If you have problems doing the install, try it in safe mode.

Just google avast they have a free home use antiviruse that is every bit a good as norton or other name brands. I have been using it for years as has most of my family thanks to my brother (the computer guy as I call him).

--I manage a multi million dollar IT environment and thus consider myself somewhat an expert on these manners --

IF your antivirus is expired, AND your computer is "acting weird" and slow -- there is a good change you have a virus or other malware on your system already.

I would NOT recommend any of the commercially available antivirus programs (Norton, Mcaffee etc) as they are massive system hogs -- i will second the previous poster recommendation of Avast! -- its fast, free, lightweight in terms of system utilization, updated frequently and has protected every PC in my house for the last 8 years.

I would ALSO recommend a complete system restore -- check your PCs documentation -- it may be as simple as pressing ALT-F12 and clicking NEXT.

Windows is not that hard to install these days -- its pretty straightforward, and if you own a brand name PC it will re-install all the programs it arrived with -- BUT this WILL remove any files , pictures, music, documents etc -- so make sure you copy those somewhere safe before you take this step.

Thanks for all advices. When I got computer, I created revovery or whatever it is called discs. My question is, when you create such disc is Windows also copied, because my computer did not come with Windows disc, it was installed but no copy.
Another question, documents and photos I created, not from online, could they also got infected, I mean, I can copy them to the disc and then back to computer but if there is a virus on them will they damage computer once again.
Sorry for all the questions, I am not very technical.
Thanks for all the help.

Yes, Windows is on the recovery discs.

Could they be infected? There's a slim chance but possibly, it depends on the virus....IF you actually have a virus (which hasn't been determined yet.)
If you want to play it safe, once you copy your data back over, run a virus scan BEFORE you open any of your files.

Install avast for free online and run a scan with it see if it picks anything up before you wipe your system.

This can be a loaded question. There are a few free anti virus solutions that do a good job. Avast, FreeAVG, and Microsoft Security Essentials. There are also several that offer free online scans, Panda being one. I'd strongly suggest trying the free online scan from Panda, and then after that downloading and installing one of the other 3 programs.

And check with your internet provider. Many of them provide a subscription to McAfee or similar included as part of your monthly fee. So even if you did buy something, you may be able to return it and save your money.

RE reinstalling Windows. It really depends on what you have. There are a few different types of nasties, viruses and malware being the two biggies. Viruses can do more damage, but tend to be silent. They like to spread and cause mischief. Malware tends to be more of an annoyance, and causes all sorts of popups, loads rogue programs, that type of thing. Viruses tend to attach themselves to your actual files. So they build themselves into your word docs, screen savers, etc. Malware attaches all sorts of things to Windows, but usually runs as a standalone file. So if you do have a virus, reinstalling Windows probably won't resolve it. Your actual files would still be infected, and would need to be cleaned. You may need to fully format your hard drive (losing all your data) and start over from scratch. Malware on the other hand, can often be fixed by reinstalling Windows. This removes the "hooks" the program has into Windows, and then doesn't get run. The files are still on your computer, but Windows won't load them.

I would also suggest downloading and installing Malware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware (both have free versions) to see what they find. Most anti virus programs still tend to focus on just finding viruses, while anti malware programs tend to focus on just finding malware.

There are a whole host of things that may need to be done to fix it. Booting into safe mode, building a recovery/cleaning disk, etc, but start with doing some more AV scans and also a malware scan.

I've worked in the IT industry my whole life and get some strange satisfaction out of seeking out and destroying those little buggers. Some can be very tough to clean out. If you get data from either the AV or malware scan indicating what you have, try checking the forums at bleepingcomputer to see how to best clean them.

Just want to second the use of bleepingcomputer if you need it. They have walked me through fixing a few issues, all on a level I could understand.

One problem with malicious stuff on your computer is, when asking for help, nearly everyone uses the term "virus" much like everyone uses the term "kleenex" for a general facial tissue.

You need to not only run the antivirus, but also Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes will catch a ton of stuff that no antivirus has ever caught for me (including Avast and AVG, 2 of the 3 most recommended for years.)

These also NEED to be ran in Safe Mode. When you do not run in Safe Mode, it catches most everything, but there is always some process currently running that scans can't catch and in the end, all the malicious stuff is reinstalled right after your finished scanning.
