I have a work issued Macbook that is full - can't download without deleting - but also have been given an updated computer.
I need to get all the files off this Macbook but I really want to be able to access the files easily.
where should I download them?
How do I know I got all the files off?
edit to add these are files I have paid for & downloaded or docs I've made

We were never allowed to make changes or swaps ourselves. Corporate IT did it to make sure all the files were moved and that there was no unauthorized software on the machines.
Our tech person said to take off anything I wanted to save & start using the new one

If you have a usb port, I'd offload them to a usb.

As far as knowing if you got them all... you'll just have to look through the folders and such as you're copying or moving them.

The answer you got from your IT dept makes NO sense to me. For anything work related, that is part of the job of the typical IT dept. Clearly, personal files that have nothing to do with your job is your responsibility to retain (and most companies have guidelines about what you are permitted to store on that device.) IF you filled up your storage with a lot of personal files when company policy is that you shouldn't use it for that purpose, then I can see moving personal files isn't their role. However, what about someone who has ZERO PC knowledge and has a lot work related files to maintain? Your IT dept wouldn't be willing to help them either? I would talk to their boss (or your boss) to get a clarification on how this should work.

This. You're going to have to figure out how much (size wise, not number of files) you need to move off, move them to some other media (hard drive, flash drive, cloud), then import onto the new computer.

I HIGHLY suggest NOT keeping personal files on your work provided computer. I won't say I've never done it, but it is not a good idea.

Flashdrive/external HD is the easy answer, as long as IT IS OK w/that... drag/drop. Depending on how old your MacBook is, you might need some kind of adapter, for the regular old USB to USB C.... but those are cheap.

*another thought: is your new computer Mac or Windows? Reason being, if it is Mac no worries at all. If it is Windows, you just need t make sure you don't format the external drive as Mac, if you do, the Windows will not read it.
