Computer help please..possible virus?

To get into Safe Mode:

Reboot computer and immediately and constantly keep pressing down the F8 button until a Window appears asking you which Safe Mode you want. Scroll down to like the third choice. It should say Safe Mode with Networking. (Networking means Internet access.)

Once you are in Safe Mode,
Go to START -> Programs ->
Accessories -> System Tools ->
System Restore

Then pick a date like last Friday, what ever is BOLDED around then. (Remember you can always UNDO it, or even Undo and pick an earlier date if necessary.)

It will reboot you to an earlier time. Yet the virus may still be on your computer. ReBoot back into Safe Mode with Networking. (Actually, you didn't need the Networking the first time, but it was good practice. )

Log onto the Internet and download the Malwarebytes program. Then, while you are still in Safe Mode, Install Malwarebytes. Update it immediately, to make sure you have the latest version. Then click "Perform Full scan." It will probably about 45 minutes to an hour & a half.

Go have an Irish Whiskey for St. Patty's Day :shamrock: :drinking1 while you are waiting.

Ok I am trying to download this and it gets to wear you need to click run..but I get a box that pops that says OPen with..and then it want me to pick a program. My computer is so screwed.

Don't RUN it. Click SAVE AS, (or something like that,) so it downloads to your computer. Make sure you know what file you put it in. You have to download the program onto your computer, then INSTALL it, do not try to run it off the internet. The virus will probably kill it that way.

OP...I'm right there with you. So confused! :sad2:

I've been following along and downloaded the free version of malwarebytes. It removed 100 things on my comp. Many more things were found and needed to be removed. Someone here said malwarebytes may need to be run several times to remove everything needed.

I'd placed an icon on desktop and went into malwarebytes a second time to run again. The program looked entirely different and it wanted to now do a "deep scrub". Is this normal? I got panicky and cancelled the action. Okay to continue?

I've never seen a "deep scrub". :scared1:

Okay, you try running it in Safe Mode with Networking, too. (See 2 posts above.) Make sure you update Malwarebytes first, in case the version you installed isn't the latest one. Then click "Perform Full Scan."

How 'bout I just send you a bus ticket? :thumbsup2

Fried the stove last night, wiping out all files on the 'ole puter tonight. Life's good! :woohoo:

Seriously, thank you. Will take a deep breath, go back and follow instructions s-l-o-w-l-y.

Ok let's try this.

1. Delete malwarebytes first, we will reinstall it again in a bit. Start, programs, malewarebytes, uninstall.

2. Download this file and save it to your desktop. Run it, it terminates maleware from running.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe

3. Download malewarebytes again, update it, and run a full scan. Select all checkboxes in what it found and then clean
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe

If that doesn't care of it, I can post a bit more agreesive suggestions. It works for most maleware though with the exception of rootkits....there are fixes for those but can be a pain.

Oh yes, the rkill.exe is supposed to be done before Malwarebytes for some tricky viruses. (It's been a while since I had to do this.)

Good catch, Josh. :thumbsup2

Thank you! It is running now:)

Ok the scan is complete and it found nothing...but my computer is still not rigght...so frustrating.

 Sorry, I don't know what else to do.

Here is a sight to go to for downloads.

I live in the chicago area. I listen to WGN 720 a 50,000 watt radio station owned by the Tribune co. There is a program that comes on at 11pm mon -fri and 2am on sun.. Every Wednesday night is computer night and they take phone calls. The man who owns this site is on that night answering questions.

My computer slowed down last week, an indication that a bad program is in the computer.

I ran Malwarebyte Spyware/Adware remover and it found the program causing the problem.

i got a vista 2010 security virus about a week ago-malware bytes, my military symnantec endpoint and microsoft MRT didnt pick it up-i manually removed it from my registry on one computer and it promptly appeared on one i was working on for someone-He had spyware doctor which is a paid spyware removal tool-it found and removed it.

There are some forums you can go to for help with virus and malware removal. Two options are:

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/forums.html
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

I haven't used either of these personally. I had used another site like these called Castle Cops a few years ago but unfortunately it has shut down.

The Geeks to Go site has this guide that might be useful. I know you've run Malwarebytes already but you might try again following the exact steps in the guide. They have you clear caches before hand etc.

I just had this EVIL VIRUS!!!!

I had to have the geek squad remove it.

I was surfing- didn't even click or open anything!

I got the RUNDLL32 error. all my shortcuts on my desktop were gone- at least the pics were.

the only way I was able to get into anything was to right click and run as administrator.

I have a couple antivirus programs that run- it disabled both!!

Best Buy said that this is a new one that they had just talked about earlier inthe day.

you know it is a "good" virus when you go to pick up your tower and the person who waits on you was not even there when you brought it in says
"oh- i remember you" by the virus that was on your computer

they were able to get it all out and i didn't loose a thing

was worth the $$$ as we are moving in less than a week!

Ok the scan is complete and it found nothing...but my computer is still not rigght...so frustrating.

Did you run rkill first?

Ok try this, run rkill again.

Download this to your desktop

http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip

Close everything down and run the tds program. *****Take note what the log shows*****, if there is something there it will say so. This program looks for rootkit maleware. After it runs click any key and then reboot.

You say in the OP that it was moved to the "virus vault." I found this from AVG:

http://www.avg.com/us-en/index-faq.keyw-virus+vault

Which might explain why you are not finding it.

Did you figure out your registry errors? Are your shortcuts now working?

OK I clicked delete so then according to this link it is gone? So whyisn't my computer right? Should I Do the system restore thing suggested earlier...I won't lose anything important to do this. Should I run the kill link posted a couple links above? OH boy who knew computers were such a pain..oh right everyone knows that lol.

Well I ran the TDSkill program and it found nothing either...so should I do the system restore?

Try going to one of the help forums I posted links to in an earlier post. Read their guidelines on how to post a request for help and then post a message on their forums. Someone should be able to help you.

Just wanted to thank everyone who came and looked at this thread I finally got it fixed tonight. I ended up doing a system restore, the went into safe mode, downloaded malewarebytes and ran it. It found 9 issues! Got it fixed and now my computer is running good again so thank you all!
