Computer Gurus..please help! DS "broke" my laptop

My DS6 was playing on my laptop and when finished, he closed it and sort of tossed it on the ground. When I turned it back on the screen is all messed up.

There is a black vertical stripe (about 1.5") down the middle and the rest of the screen, while showing what is normally does, is barely visible. It's all very light.

If anyone can help, I will be eternally grateful. My laptop is my favorite thing that I own, not to mention I need it for work when school starts.

Oh, it's a DELL Inspiron 700m.

I am not a computer guru, but DH is. I just told him about your problem, and he says your screen may need to be replaced (about 1/3 of the cost of your laptop, including installation) which may be easy or difficult depending on the laptop. Alternatively, it could be the connection to the screen that is broken, in which case some serious surgery (soldering) would be in order.
