Computer experts - Norton-vs-McAfee

I know absolutely nothing about computers. We have Norton on our computers and don't get viruses or pop ups. That's all I know. Oh, and I have to do the Live Update thingy every couple days. But it is easy.

Norton=Stinks. Don't waste your money.
AVG=I hate the interface and it slows me down. but hey, it's free and useful.
McAfee=I love their Siteadvisor extension for IE and firefox, but never tried the Suite.
I use Lavasoft for spyware. And Zonealarm for the firewall. ZA is THE BEST Firewall. I love it. :) And AVG, Lavasoft, and ZA are free.

NORTON

I will NEVER put any of that McAfee junke on my machine again. They put a bunch of "add ons" with the freebie stuff and it took HOURS to get all that JUNKE off the machine (and it slowed my machine to a crawl) HATED IT! Their idea of a fix was to allow them to add MORE useless software. (And they tracked ALL my internet access via this junke!) *(I never did get rid of all the McAfee mess, but I learned to live with it. Computer finally died... personally I think that mess was part of the problem) I can get McAfee for FREE and I pay for Norton (which has never caused me any problems and my response time is fine so...)

I also distrust anything sold my Microsoft. Thier idea of product testing is "sell it" and let the consumers tell us it's broken.....

Hey DragonLord,
Most everyone says the AVG is good. Can you explain what you mean by not liking the interface??? I used to be computer-savvy a few years ago, but I am completely lost with the latest stuff.

Thanks!

Switch to an Apple when you buy your next computer :thumbsup2

My house has a family of Macs now... (2 laptops, 1 desktop). We still have one PC, but we're constantly doing this :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

We haven't had any problems w/ our macs after several years! :cool1:

I know it's not the direct answer you wanted, just a suggestion!

You don't have to worry about spyware or viruses because most computer-hackers/spammers don't create programs that will interface w/ macs... the % of people w/ macs is so much lower than the % of people with PCs. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I hate Norton. I don't have it myself, but my parents did and since I'm the one who usually fixes what's ailing their computer(s), I had to deal with all of its ramifications. It's entirely too invasive for me, trying to get its little tentacles into every single program and process on your system, telling you what you should and shouldn't be able to access, etc. I'm sorry, but if it's my computer, I feel like I d*mn well ought to be able to see and/or access anything I d*mn well please!

BTW, I have McAfee and the only problem I've got with it is that it seems to be a bit of a resource hog but I guess I can live with it. Anything's better than Norton!!

My advice: unless you are very computer saavy, take it to a geek shop for the uninstall.

This is what we did, had the Nortons and McAfee removed and Panda Platinum installed. Had a big cleanup job for the geek, and this was part of it! Ran great after that.
