The only exception is if a reserved room is taken out of service at the last minute for some reason, such as a water leak, etc, and there are no other rooms of the same classification available.
We had a ressie at BWV the evening before the 2005 SS Member Cruise. We had booked a studio and were pleasantly surprised to find a 1BR when we opened the door! Why couldn't that have happened when we were there for a whole week!
We received an upgrade from a 1 BR to a 2BR at HH on our cash ressie, and we had one more night on our ressie using points so they let us stay in the 2BR the whole time instead of having to move from a 2 to a 1.
Kristie, of TSS and her husband checked in late at night for their studio in Hilton Head Island DVC. The CM explained they were out of studios and asked her if they minded if they gave them a 2 bedroom instead. They kicked and screamed and demanded their studio. NOT!
It does happen but rarely. And it's usually in a situation where the unit type is not available such as in Tom's example or when the member has been otherwise wronged or inconvenienced. Many got upgraded from BWV standard to preferred when the renovations were going on and a few of those from a studio to a 1 BR. I've seen a couple upgraded to GV at OKW from 2 BR units. I'd think a sure fire way not to get an upgrade with DVC would be to ask for it. BTW, many timeshares will upgrade exchangers for a price. At the Embassy in Maui it was $70 per night per room to go from mountain view to ocean view and we had 2 rooms side by side. I declined the extra $1000.
At the BWV during our Christmas '04 visit we checked into our standard view studio...overlooking the themed pool. I don't know what the situation was that caused us to get this room, we didn't inquire. We spent the 11 days enjoying our view of the pool and the ToT.
It was also in Dec 04 when DSis and I took our little DNeph to BWV not long after the tragic loss of our DBro - giving our other DSis a little break herself to prepare for a difficult holiday and trying to help DNeph find a little holiday joy. Our trip was sooooo full of pixie dust from beginning to end - and when I asked where our Std Studio (which was all I had points left for) was located, the young CM checking us in did a double take and said "well, I see you've been moved into a one bedroom overlooking the canal and the Swan and Dolphin - that's very unusual" (she actually seemed puzzled herself). We like to think that this very rare upgrade came courtesy of what we kept calling "our angel by our side" - we even shed a few tears when we walked into that beautiful room with the fabulous view!! ( I know, I know. . . there were renovations going on, but I'm sticking with my story )
A friend of mine went last summer on her DVC membership through the Boardwalk and when she checked in she was upgraded to the Grand Villa! The Grand Villa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our very first DVC vacation at the Boardwalk, we were upgraded from a 2 bdrm to the GV!!! It was the greatest thing ever. We were only staying three days, but every couple of hours someone looked around the room and squealed in delight! It was a great kick-off to the magic of Disney!
