Complicated UY question

I talked to my guide and he has confirmed I can get 160pts at SSR through DVC and set up all the contract/purchase over the phone and then sign the paperwork once in WDW in January so that's all fab!

He also said I can have any UY I want and we are going to go through everything on the phone on Sunday, get the contract set up and then he will put me through to MS to get me a reservation for January.

I had originally worked out the December was my best UY based on the fact that it is highly likely I was always travel in January and nearly always plan at 11 months out because I own my business and September - December is manic as we sell toys.

The thing is, I would really need to use, bank and borrow 3 years worth of points as we are coming over for 3 weeks as usual and plan on staying at several DVC resorts.

The banking deadline for a Dec UY for 07 points has already long passed and my guide said it is likely that MS won't let me use/bank 07 points if I go for a Dec UY which will effectively mean "loosing" them.

So bearing in mind we will nearly always travel to WDW in January although a possibility of a December trip one year and possibly a November trip too as one-offs, what will be the best UY for me to ask for on Sunday so that I can immediately bank the 08 points to use for my ressie for Jan 09?

You can select any Use Year you'd like , since all except December are already in the 2008 Use Year and you will not need to bank any points for your trip in January since January, 2009 falls within all 08 Use Years.

If you will occasionally travel in November and December in addition to January, you might consider an October Use Year which would allow you good flexibility should you need to cancel a reservation.

Have a great trip in January. :)

Our story: Love our OCT UY!

We always travel in January and frequently in December. We had done our research and pushed hard for a DEC UY. Our guide instead handed us OCT. .... Years later .... we are really happy with the OCT UY. Can't wait to someday visit for Food & Wine!

For the past few years, MS has allowed people to bank their points in this situation, even if they are just weeks away from the end of their UY as you would be if you purchased a Dec UY. So unless there has been a recent change in policy that has not yet been reported here, you should be able to bank the Dec 2007 UY points you would receive with your purchase. All other UY months are in their 2008 UY so if you purchase anything other than a Dec UY, your first set of points will be 2008 UY points so you would be giving up 160 points.

If your primary travel dates will be January and sometimes December, a Dec UY would be perfect for you. On the other hand, if you expect that a Nov trip could become a regular event then a Dec UY could become a problem for you. Cancelling a Nov trip on short notice would put you past your banking deadline and leave you little time to use the points for something else before they expired on Nov 30. But if a Nov trip would be a very rare event, then I would be tempted to take a Dec UY to get that extra set of points. When you speak with your guide on Sunday tell him that you've read that for the past several years MS has allowed members to bank the points that come with their purchase and ask him to check with MS for you.

Thanks for the really helpful replies.

As I am definitely going to need to use 3 years worth of points for this trip, I am going to take the advice and get my guide to speak to MS for me on Sunday and hopefully sort out the 07 points so I can take the Dec UY which is what I originally wanted.

A November trip would definitely be a rare event so it does make sense to try and stick with the Dec UY.

Thanks.

LisaS is right. I just called last night and purchased an add on with a Dec UY and my guide said there would be no problem banking 2007 points.

Update on my previous post:

Received my add-on points today and just got off the phone with MS and there was no problem banking the 2007 points although they are DEC UY

If this is a new purchase, it may have some effect on the ability to bank the points from the 2007 Use Year. It is certainly worth asking the DVC guide about since it involves a significant number of points.

Originally, MS would not allow points (even add-on points) to be banked beyond the deadline - and that was when the deadline was still at 10 months instead of the current 8 months. That has been relaxed in recent years allowing add-on purchases to be banked beyond the usual deadlines.

Originally, while new members were allowed to make reservations immediately, they were not allowed to bank or borrow points until after closing. Perhaps that is what the guide was referring to in this case - if it is a first purchase and not an add-on or purchase by an existing member.

Please report back when you have a response from your guide. I would certainly ask for verification about receiving and being able to bank the 2007 Use Year points.

Good luck! :)

I have just got off the phone with MS and the 07 points were banked and used without any problems. MS just said that they had to be used to make a ressie before the end of this month which was no problem for me of course as I was booking my Jan 09 stay at the same time.

So I was able to bank and use my 160 07 pts, use my 160 08 pts and borrow 64 09 pts to make my ressie for Jan :cool1:

So excited now we are finally club members!!

Congratulations and welcome home!! I'm glad things worked out for you. I hope you have a great time in January!
