I am having the hardest time figuring out how I need to prep for tolls. I don't want to get charged that huge rental car plate pass key. I will be driving from Cabana Bay to WDW once, other than that I will be staying mostly local (at the hotel, maybe the Disney Outlet). How much do tolls cost? How much should I budget for? How does cash work? Do I need quarters? Please help!

-EDIT-
Thank you everyone for your help! I feel much less stressed about this toll thing now!

Cabana Bay by Universal? No reason to pay any tolls at all. I4 is a freeway. Will you be picking up the car at the airport? If you take 528 from MCO to I4, I think the cash is now $2.25, payable at the cash lanes which are attended so you wouldn't have to have exact change. The cash lane is off to the right side of the highway at the toll plaza and includes a cash lane that takes exact change and a attended booth where you can get change for your payment if it is more than the toll.

I brought a roll of quarters and ten $1 bills and put them in an envelope in my carry on to easily slip into the front seat of the car when we got going. As mentioned, just be aware that the cash tolls are all the way to the right. They almost feel like you are taking an exit in order to access the booths but no fear, it really is just the cash booths then you are back at it. I didn't go anywhere that I needed exact change but I preferred to have it just so I could keep moving along as quickly as possible.

Stop worrying CASH is the way to go

As pointed out STAY RIGHT at toll booth exit Follow Right lane

heading for GREEN Signal ( Cash Lane With Receipt )

.....................

IF YOU DO exit on a " BASKET COIN " only Collection Point

SLOW Down & go as Close as you can to Basket & gently place coins into Basket

If you Drop coins ..... get out of car and pick them up and drop them in.

So What if the next car hoots horn ...... You might never see them ever again

This thread is the best. I'm starting to feel anxious about tolls.

Those trips won't involve tolls. Uni to WDW is along I-4. no tolls.

The only way you need the excellent info everyone gave above is if you're getting the rental car at and/or returning to the airport.

One final note: make sure to allocate a few extra minutes to your trip on 528 to stop for the toll, especially during peak travel times.

I just bought a Sunpass. No reason to sit behind someone in the cash lanes digging in their wallet looking for coins or asking for directions.

We take about $5 in quarters and $10 in dollar bills specifically just for the tolls. When we get up to a toll booth, my wife already has the cash available for me.

Ironically, when we had a rental in 2015 the cash lanes were actually quicker than the others. We had an 8pm flight on a Friday so we were a bit in the midst of rush hour which I am sure played a role but we definitely got through before people we had previously been close to prior to the toll. You just never know.

But still, the op's plans do not mention anything that will require tolls if any sort. :)

We've added in the airport possibility, but MM didn't say where she's getting the car.

We have the Georgia Peach Pass which works in Florida.

Its nothing to worry about. Take some cash and quarters with you, and stay to the right. For the coins only lanes that don't have an operator, just watch the counter and you're good to go when you get up to the correct toll.

We usually hit two toll booths on the way in (the big one on the toll road between Ocala and Orlando) and the one at the bottom of the exit when we get off the toll road. We also hit two on the way home as well.

Personally, I think your nervousness is valid. :) Not seriously, but just be aware.
We go every year and we have not had one single year without issue.
We go to the side through the cash lanes, save the receipt, even take pictures for proof, and every time we get a notice with a charge saying we blew through a toll.

It has gotten so blankety blank frustrating!

Last year, I challenged it with many phone calls and finally found out the exact tolls they said we went through without paying. They were in Miami....We weren't in MIAMI.

Then this year, we used the Ga. Peach pass. It was registered, affixed, we had had a phone call with the peach pass people making sure all was in order.

We went through two tolls with the pass and STILL got charged and fined for one. How ONE worked and ONE didn't, who knows? . I called Sun pass, Peach pass and Alamo and everybody pointed fingers at each other.

All I can say, is take your quarters, be aware of what tolls you are going through and be ready to defend your position.

This has been happening every single year for YEARS. (It also happened north of Destin and I know we didn't blow through the toll! We always stop and find something nice to say to the attendant. Grrrrr......)

It sounds like paying cash for toll on the section of 528 connecting MCO to I4 is still an option. Is there any plan to make it electronic only in the near future (ie: this coming summer)? I will be renting a car and would like to avoid paying the rental agency surcharge if possible. TIA.
