Ok so we have only been on one cruise and it was the Disney Dream. It was so wonderful!!! I can't wait till we can book another Disney cruise! ::yes:: Ok so now I am seeing cruises this fall for the Enchantment of the Seas for about $200 each. How does it compare?

Nothing beats Disney for us so far! Enchantment is an old ship but my vote is for Disney all the way!

I have been on Enchantment of the Seas and Disney. There is no comparison. It is an older ship. The kids "club" is small and almost non-existent. You also need to pay for parts of the kids club (like if you want your kids to eat in the club, or if you want the kids to go there in the evening).

The pools are OK.

You have to buy a soda package and they give you a cup to carry around with you-you get it filled at the bars on the ship.

MDR is a huge, 2 story dining room. Food was good. We did not do the specialty restaurant (I think it was a "steak house")

You had to pay for many of the entertainment things on the schedule. I mean beyond BINGO. For example, they had scrapbooking, but there was a fee. Yoga-fee. Some things were free, but any of the interesting things had a cost.

They will NOT let you take your own pictures if there is a photographer. For example, we got off the ship in Nova Scotia, and the dolphin (or whatever their mascot is) was waiting to take pictures with guests. They have a photographer to take the pic, but I also tried to get a picture-the person with the mascot started waving their hand in front of my camera so I couldn't get the shot! I was pissed and refused to buy any pictures except our boarding shot for the whole cruise (and I ALWAYS buy a ton of pictures!)

Casino allows smoking, and it permeates out into the Galleria (or whatever they call it)- the Atrium. It is a beautiful atrium though. Elevators are glass and overlook it.

There is a Build-a-Bear conveniently located in the Galleria too...just buy the bear to begin with or your kids will bug you for one the whole cruise.

Rooms were small. I peeked inside an inside cabin, and it was a sideways cabin. Barely enough room for a twin bed on each side, and a small nightstand next to it. Probably had to walk sideways to get out from the bed. Bathroom was TINY. We had a Suite, which gave us a tub, otherwise you get a cramped shower. We had an aft suite, so we had a HUGE verandah, and that was nice. The suite was a little bigger than a standard verandah room on Disney ships...

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the great information! I was scared that since Disney was our first cruise that we wouldn't be happy with anything less. They sure know how to spoil you!! Also I was a little uneasy about being out in the middle of the ocean in a ship so at least being on a newer ship and had the Disney "standards" made me feel better. I know anything can happen on any ship but Disney does seem to hold the bar a little higher than the other cruise lines. The only thing is the price. We can go on the Enchantment of the Seas for about 1/3 of the price of another Dream cruise. In saying that I want to feel good about the trip and not feel like we had to compromise too much.
The difference in the kids activities won't matter to us since we don't have any little ones. The soda thing stinks but we don't drink much soda so we would be happy with coffee/tea/water (or whatever is included). We also probably wouldn't do too much of the extra activities like yoga or any classes so that isn't even a big deal. I do want to feel like we are staying in a high class hotel and not a Super 8 though.

We're doing Enchantment in about 3 weeks. Been on the Dream twice, and would have liked to do it again, but for a 3-day cruise, the Dream was $800 more. I'll give a report when we return.

Like others have said, comparing the Disney Dream to Royal Caribbean's Enchantment of the Seas is comparing apples to oranges.

Enchantment of the Seas is a smaller, older ship. It was launched in 1997. During an extensive dry dock in 2005, the vessel was actually cut in half and stretched. The gross tonnage is now 82,910 GT and the ship is 988.71 feet in length (compared to the Disney Dream at 130,000 GT and 1115 feet in length).

Enchantment's most recent dry dock was in 2012 (Dream launched in 2011) when it received a Park Cafe, poolside movie screen, Centrum (atrium/lobby) upgrade with acrobatic acts that the other Vision-class ships received, flatpanel TVs, upgraded phones, ship-wide Wifi, and other enhancements.

That being said, Enchantment of the Seas is not equivalent to a "Super 8". It's been recently refurbished with contemporary linens and technology. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that Enchantment of the Seas is much smaller, and the kids' programming is not nearly as expansive.

Good point. I haven't thought about how much smaller it is.
Is the enchantment of the seas closer to the same size as the Magic or Wonder?

The Enchantment is much more comparable in size and age to the Disney Magic (and Wonder). The Magic was launched in 1998 and is 84,000 GT and 984 ft in length. Both ships (Disney Magic and Royal Caribbean Enchantment) have 11 decks and a capacity of about 2,400 passengers.

So, the Enchantment is $1,550 less than the Dream for the 4 of us (2A2C) for a 3 night cruise. Both OV, same departure date, same itinerary. Been twice on RCCL and twice on DCL and like some things about RCCL better than DCL, and like some things in DCL better than RCCL. Really thinking about this.

I will say this about the Disney classic ships (which are my personal faves), they are beautifully kept so for me, and I am pretty doggoned picky, their age is almost irrelevant. I just got off the Wonder about 3 weeks ago for a 10 night Hawaii cruise which included crossing the Pacific. The ship is truly just as beautiful as she was when she is new. My DD and I were truly amazed at how fabulous she looks. Yes, if you looked VERY closely you can see some layers of paint but that's because someone is almost always painting somewhere onboard keeping things "shipshape". I have been on a RCCL ship when it was quite new though it has been a long time back, and I thought the ship was nice. It was overall a good cruise. But I would not sail on any other cruise lines old ships. That's just me. I would recommend looking at a deal on one of RCCL's news ships. Maybe one that is just a very few years old.

Vino, you're not the only person here asking about Enchantment!

I'd do it in a heartbeat. I wasn't on Enchantment, but on Vision (same class), and we had only one issue. (bad weather plus casino just off the Centrum plus Molly-is-very-allergic-to-smoke = sad Molly frightened of asthma attack) The ship was pretty, the kid's club was great according to my son, the kids learned a pirate song and had a parade and sang it in the Centrum, the food was good the service was very good... It was all very good.

But I would not sail on any other cruise lines old ships. That's just me. I would recommend looking at a deal on one of RCCL's news ships. Maybe one that is just a very few years old.

Royal is constantly doing maintenance on their ships just like Disney. While we were on Radiance early in its life and that was lovely, we were on Vision just last year and it was very good. No need to fear older ships IMO.

I personally didn't like Enchantment. The biggest thing FOR ME is that I felt the smoke from the casino got everywhere and I ended up having to have antibiotics after the cruise. Yay for asthma and being sensitive to smoke. Royal's newer ships are wonderful; their older ships are not as good/enjoyable as Disney for me.

I did a 3nt on Enchantment and have done several 3 nts on the Dream. No comparison really, but just so you know that going in. I hadn't been to Coco Cay in a while, so I thought it would be fun to visit their private island. Coco Cay is not as nice as Castaway Cay, but we still really enjoyed it. I know now going in it's not going to be the equivalent of Disney, but for the right price, I'd sail her again. I went with my son, who is a teen, and the teen club is a joke, virtually nonexistent actually.

In regards to smoke- is it necessary/convenient to pass through the casino to manuver about the ship. I recall past cruises "cutting through" the casino often (different lines, different ships) without kids it wasn't a huge deal, but I am also more sensitive to smoke myself now as well.

You don't have to pass through the casino but it seeped into other areas. My room was forward on deck four and ALL you could smell in the hallways was smoke.

We have been on the majesty, which is a class below enchantment. It was nice, and we both had a good time. We didn't bring the kids that time. I loved their island, the service was great. The rooms are so much bigger/nicer on DCL and there is a bit of "magic" and once you include travel costs and taxes and incidentals, the fare ends up being a minimal difference. We both agree that we would do RCL again but we really enjoy the atmosphere on DCL which is a little more family-friendly and conservative vs the 3- or 4- night RCL trips which have a little more of a party feel.

We took the Enchantment on the 4-day Bahamas itinerary, and we've been on that same itinerary on both the Dream and the Magic. Bottom line is that the Disney ships are nicer, but the Enchantment was still a fun cruise.

- Food - both quite good, with some clunkers. Palo seemed better than Chops Grille, but they were both good. The MDR food was perhaps a bit less ambitious than Disney, but executed well. Snacks, such as the ones at the coffee bar, were much better on Disney than RCCL. The drip coffee is MUCH better on the Enchantment, amazingly enough. It was real drip coffee, made regularly, and reasonably strong. Disney uses a reconstituted product that is almost, but not quite, exactly unlike coffee (to borrow a phrase from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Espresso was good on both ships.

- Service - roughly equivalent. Dining room service on Enchantment was excellent, among the best service team we've had. Our Dream servers were perhaps a bit sub-par. It just illustrates that it's really about the specific team you get. Room attendants were excellent on Disney across the board, and very good on Enchantment.

- Décor - Disney is much better, but Enchantment was perfectly fine, with some nice touches. Disney is a company that's all about art and nostalgia and design, and it shows. Enchantment was like a very nice hotel.

- Entertainment - Disney was overall more polished, and really if you like the kinds of entertainment that Disney produces, they do it better than anyone. RCCL was a mix of production shows with good singers and dancers, but no real plot to speak of and variety performers who were entertaining. RCCL has more live music and larger bands. Enchantment's cruise director was an absolute hoot.

- Kids clubs - Disney is head and shoulders better. Enchantment had a few smallish spaces with a variety of toys and crafts and so forth. The staff did seem really nice; they were interacting with the kids when we went by and you could tell they liked children. It felt like a nice church day camp or something. Disney's kid's clubs are kind of brain-exploding with all the technology and space and play areas. On the other hand, we've heard from some other families that some kids do better in the RCCL club because there's more structure. Basically everyone does one thing, then everyone does another thing, etc. Disney gives the kids all kinds of choices and lets them do their own thing if they want, which might be overwhelming for some kids. We can only guess because our kids are teenagers and not big on the clubs. Certainly we saw a lot of kids and a lot of families on the Enchantment and they seemed to be having a good time.

- Ship - The Enchantment is almost exactly the same age as the Magic, and the same size. The Magic feels slightly better kept up, just across the board. The Enchantment wasn't awful, there were just a bit more rust spots here and there, a little more paint issues, minor repair things. Nothing that really affected our trip, and I think if we hadn't just been on the Disney ship we might not have really noticed. We did not notice smoke, really ever, including the occasional times we walked through the casino. I don't doubt other people have been bothered by smoke, but I can't actually recall smelling smoke, and usually I notice. Maybe just an outlier. At least one of the Enchantment's pools (the adult pool) is a salt water pool, which was a bit of a shock when I got water in my mouth. I didn't try the other pools.

- Overall vibe - Disney is very family-oriented and feels like a very managed, safe, fun space for the most part. RCCL was a little more freewheeling and you had a few more young drunken people doing their thing on the pool deck, but it didn't bother us. The entertainment had somewhat more adult edge on RCCL, especially in the nighttime club entertainment. But it wasn't as different as we expected.

I guess I feel like Disney was just overall better. More polished, more thoughtfully designed. Better. But we had a great time on the Enchantment and I wouldn't hesitate to take it again if it was doing an itinerary we liked and the price was right. But if we can afford it, we'll take Disney first.

I know the OP said that she didn't have kids, but I am posting this so that people who see this post in the future see the info. These threads on cruisecritic includes the kids daily planners, and also includes hours of operations for various days. Also includes the late night info, which is when they charge for kids programs. ($7/hour per kid 10PM-2AM) One thread is a year old at this point, and the threads are not about Enchantment, but they at least gives you an idea of the programming on Royal Caribbean ships.

I think dmunsil really explained the differences well. We've been on both the Dream and Enchantment (and lots of other Royal ships). I definitely liked Dream better than Enchantment, but Enchantment wasn't necessarily a bad cruise. For a long time I said I didn't want to return to Enchantment, but I really think it was more because we had bad weather. It was too cool and breezy to eat on our balcony. We missed Coco Cay due to high winds, and had to dock in Nassau for two days. We booked Enchantment because we really wanted to see Coco Cay, so missing it was a disappointment.

We did NOT have a party crowd at all, which surprised us. We did a 4 day cruise, and I'd say over 2/3 of the cruisers were over the age of 60 or 70. At our dinner table of 10, there were three couples in their 70s+, a couple in their 50s, and then us (in our early 30s). Not the best match, but there weren't many people our age on the cruise that weren't in a family group. (We saw some family reunion-type groups - grandparents/parents/kids/etc - as well)

The cruise director, Mark Walker, is a hoot! After his current contract, I believe he has one more before he retires. He will be moving to Majesty when it starts cruising from Port Canaveral soon. For those of you that have had him as a cruise director, he has a Facebook page. Bing Bong Marc Walker
