Howdy folks,

We are in the process for renting a ECV for our Christmas trip. Can you tell us in your opinion which models work well and which companies are the best to use? I'm looking for long battery life, doesn't have to be a heavy duty type, since Mom only weighs less than 150lbs, and has a canopy or can add a canopy to it.

I'm not sure which one to use.

Thanks,
Mel

The companies listed in post #2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread are ones most frequently recommended by DIS posters over the years. Different people have different favorites, but I would say none of the ones listed are any better or worse overall than any others.

I am not seeing post #2 that you speak of..is there anyway you can direct me a little more on where I can find this. I need to find a company to work with in December. Thank you

My cousin always rents hers from Walker Mobility. They deliver and pick it up at the hotel, at luggage service. If you have any problems with the ECV, they are quick to fix it. We always ask for the small battery charger so it will fit in the pouch on the back of the seat in case we need it. Our last trip was only the second time we have ever had to charge it in the park, but I think it was because she used the headlight so much.

We've always used Walkers for my mom and in fact, already have one reserved for our Dec trip. They've always been wonderful to deal with and we've always gotten good ECVs. Never had a problem!

The post number two SueMN is speaking of is in the Disabilities FAQ's section at the top of the Disabilities forum.

There is a link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread. Post #2 of that thread is the one I am talking about.

Hands down - SCOOTARAMA!!! they are so good, it's like hugging Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Pluto --- all at once.

We always rent cars (not fans of WDW bus system and certainly not when traveling with a scooter). We rented the Pride Revo. It's easy to break down into pieces convenient to handle.

Don't forget to take your Handicapped Plackard - FREE valet parking and the valet will help to get the scooter in and out of the car for you.

Have a great trip!

I'm glad to hear the valets will help with getting the scooter out of the trunk. I have two big fears when my sister and I take my mom to Disney this December: That we're not going to be able to figure out how to assemble and disassemble Mom's rented ECV, and that we won't be strong enough to get the pieces in and out of the trunk. Has anyone else had these troubles?

Make sure where ever you rent from you get a scooter that disassembles. Some ECV's don't break down. If you get a company that rents either the Pride Revo or Go-Go you won't have any problems with breaking it down or handling it to put in vehicle.

I have the Go-Go Traveler Elite Plus scooter and the heaviest piece when disassembled is 39 lbs (the rear wheel section). It literally breaks down into 4 very managable pieces. All I do is remove basket and seat, lift off the battery, lift 1 lever and seperate the rear wheels from the deck part. I also drop down the tiller to the lowest position after taking the battery and seat off. It is really easy. I believe that the Revo also breaks down in a similar way.

If you need to look for a travel scooter. They will be the smallest and lightest ones out there.

We actually had a valet at BWI ASK US to show him how to break down and setup our scooter.....so he could learn to help others. Not only did he receive GREAT TIPS throughout our stay, BWI General Manager got a very nice letter all about it.

Before we left for our trip we knew we were renting a Pride Revo. I went to the website and printed the owner's manual. Ok, ok...yes....a wee bit of overkill....but I DID have the measurements to make a pouch to hang from the seatback, we also had instructions to assemble and disassemble the scooter.

One piece (base and front steering) was too much for one person. I was in a walking boot for an achilles tendon injury so I could help my DH do this. The batteries are a wee bit heavy - but nothing was really out of line heavy or too big.

One thing I DO recommend....when you first pickup the scooter....take some time to become comfortable with it's operation. Checkout speeds, practice going in reverse - parking alongside a wall, driving through tight spaces. You will be happy you did.....and everyone else's toes will be happy too!
